I love the old Evo motors. I feel like that's when the company had something to prove and that was the motor they used to prove it. I understand your choice and agree with it whole heartedly. Ride on Brother.
67 going on 68 here....lost my 54 pan/shovel to a fire a couple years ago (I had it since 1985) and replaced with a 93 FXDL...my inspiration though comes from an obituary I saw many years ago...a guy aged 98 had died, and the photo was of him and his BMW R75 which he was still riding at 94.....add if he could do it, I can too....hope to be riding in my 90's too!
I can totally relate. I searched for a nice Evo this fall and came home with a 1997 Road King. It had been sitting for some time and only had 13,400 miles. I swapped in a new battery and changed all the fluids and drove it 200 miles back home. I really enjoyed that ride and the way that old machine felt. It’s a keeper!
I "lucked" into a '98 FXD about 5 years ago for $3.5k. Low mileage, reason for sale was it tried twice to throw him off if he exceeded 65mph. Fixed problem with new "isolaters". Nice and steady at any speed now. Am a Dyna Grandad
Dont worry, you dont have to miss it. You can still do it. The market is flooded with bikes from the 80's and 90's that are in great shape ready to rock.
the motors will last forever as long as you keep up on oil and rings, the muscle bike you bought was not a good thing for your application ... the COMPLETE ASSHOLE that traded with you should have let you know about the upgrades, it seems like you wanted a stock bike! go back to the seller and kick the shit out of him :) just sayin , you can always bring it back to stock by going to a couple swap meets or just call me up, and i can see what i got in stock... we are like minded bro. !!! 5859440273
dude, you are part of a new wave. i have a '96 road king that suffered a cam bearing failure. we rebuilt the motor, added some really nice stuff like an andrews ev13 cam, and custom painted it a candy teal. while the motor was out, we went through the shocks, wiring, and detailed the frame. today, every time i ride it, someone wants to buy it. i have owned it since new, and at age 73, will never sell it. the local dealer tells me that people are seeking out the evo motor bikes now for the same reasons you did. best of luck with your heritage. ride on.
I have an 03 sporty with an Evo motor. I have revved it with the throttle all the way open and flames shooting out the back. I still ride that thing everywhere wide open. They are bullet proof. If it blows up I'll rebuild it stronger. Can't beat that old school sound
96 was the first year they took every other needle bearing out of the cam bearings! Trying to save a dollar I don't think they did that but two years 96 and 97!
I think you’re right on. The evos are arguably the best Harleys. They’re not old enough to be cool to a lot of people, but are too old for most who want the latest and greatest. The perfect bike to go after.
I'm a shovelhead guy, have been since they went alternator.I was very slow to accept the Evo but I have come to believe that it is the best motor H-D has ever, and the direction it is going, will ever produce.
I gotta agree. Besides some lifter and cam bearing issues in the later year evos, theyre absolutely bulletproof. They have the classic harley design and sound with the modern reliability.
You need to quit eating tomatoes and ketchup on your regular french fries, try mustard or salad dressing on french fries or instead eat onion rings and eat cashews no peanuts and drink clear soda's like Sprite/7-up/ginger ale and you should be feeling 7-10 years younger. Jeff
You are of a breed that the rest of the world just does not and never will understand.. you remind me a lot of myself when I was a whippersnapper. At 64 yrs young, I’ve owned 17 different Harley’s in my life. Looking for number 18 as I write this.. Congrats on your trade sir..I subbed you just to see what’s next..👍
What Harley are you looking for? I have a '90 Softail FXSTC and a '69 Electra-Glide FLH. Probably not going to keep them both. Willing to part with one of them if you're interested.
I have the tools in my shop to build Evo engines from the crank pin out. I didn't want to invest in tools to build Twinkies. My newest bike is a '95 FLHR. Evo's are fine engines.
Hi Kevin. I'm looking at a 97 Road King. How are you liking your 95 FL? Do you find it too bulky? I'm going from a Sportster and Dyna's over the years to the FL. Any thoughts.
I've currently owned my 81 Shovel now for more than 14 years, and it's my 4th one. NOTHING sounds like a Shovel with fishtails. It doesn't leak oil, and it's rock solid dependable. As long as you know how to turn a wrench occasionally, they are the shit. Anybody that says AMF Shovels aren't dependable doesn't know what they're talking about. Fuck those computerized fuel injected yuppie cruisers. As far as I'm concerned, you made the right decision, man. Evo motors and before were all built with the rider in mind, and can be rebuilt over and over again with parts that ARE AVAILABLE. Just don't expect to get anything at the stealership unless it's oil or tire work. They won't touch anything over 10 years old anyway. After '99 or so, Harley started building bikes for the shareholders, not the riders. Old iron rules.
Hugh Jorgan hahahahaaaaa hahahahahahaaaaaaa damn right 🖕 the computerized motosickle Old school like me UNDERSTAND keep diggin your Shovelhead motor dude just ASLin...
Lol nothing sound like a 108 cubic inch shovel kick only 10.5 CR Ridge frame I'm 50 years old still riding for 28 years. I. Have smoked 103 107 twin cam with this bike
Dude - I have a 98 EVO Electra Glide FLHTCI that belonged to my dad. I bought it from a relative a couple years ago to keep it in the family. Starts up instantly. Runs Great! I've ridden MCs since I was 9 years old. I'm now in my late 50s. This past spring, I test rode a couple new Fatboys, and thought about buying one. Then I got on my bike to ride home, and though ..,man, this feels better to ride, I have no payments - I think I'll just keep this and customize it some! Installed LED Headlight and driving lights, have a good bluetooth stereo to stream music from my phone when I want (but sometimes it good to cruise with just the sounds of the bike and the road), lowered it an inch in the back, and getting ready to add as many stock chrome parts as possible to make it shine like a classic! The dealers tell me how much better I will like the new technology, but the riders tell me that you can't beat an old reliable EVO!
Your passion for motorcycles of yesteryear really speaks to me. You're honest with yourself as to your tastes and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty working on your ride. My hat's off to you sir and you're the essence of a real biker.
I'm with ya on this swap. Traded my 2012 twin-cam RK for a '99 Fatboy w/80"Evo. Never looked back. Put 130k trouble-free miles on that evo. Then last spring put in an S&S 111 Evo. Love the power! Love the Evo!
I'm glad you got the bike you wanted, man. Its definitely a win win for both of you. I think you got the better end with an awesome looking bike and less mileage. Great stuff, man. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
That's the first year they took every other needle bearing out of the cam bearings so beware! When you can have some put in it , if it hasn't been done! Save yourself some grief. They did that 96 and 97 trying to save a dollar!
Oh yep, thats a proper Harley sound, I regret selling my 90 softail, and 96 Road King, now running an 11 Dyna Streetbob, no way I'm changing for the M8 monoshock chassis and the added complications. And rejoice, that bike you have now has a wait for it------ CARBURETTOR yeeeeeeeees!!!!!
fuk those twincams if they were the new wave of motors then the Milwaukee eight would have two cams, they went back to the regular style lower-end because they're better, and then just added 4 more valves... joke
Your video is really good, keep us updated ! I have an 81 FLH Shovelhead , single seat, two Fishtail pipes, white walls . A retired Hells Angel painted the bike a dark red with a small amount of black running through it . I ride around town sometimes and definitely get more looks than my buddies with the newer bikes. They are all busy playing with their GPS ,radios ! and I'm just relaxing and enjoying the wind hitting my fat head.
2 old grey beards at Doc's in STL and I were laughing about people complaining that their hydraulic clutch was a little hard and that their bluetooth wouldn't sync, lol.
Like your "new" old Heritage. I'm an old guy that still rides an Evo. Own a '97 Wide Glide with an S&S Super E carb / Hooker pipes. Most of the time when I fuel it up.....somebody will look at it or ask me about it. No computers, no fuel pump, cam gears instead of chains.....maybe the Evo's were better ?
The best part I like about evos , you can run a set of ignition points and condenser ...and if you buy the blue streak brand they have a stuff return spring that will not float out at high rpm .. If you want more power give it an S&S top end and if you want it smooth with no vibration you get your crank rods and Pistons balanced at precision balancing of Indianapolis ..I built a shovel 37 years ago as it was the first Harley I had ever rebuilt ..had it balanced at precision balancing of Indy ..and my old bike is still on the road today with the same rebuilt engine that is the original that has never been apart since I built it in 1982 ..it's been through 4 or 5 owners since and just the other day I seen my old bike at "the shop" in terre haute Indiana . Still with the same paint job on the engine as I had painted it ..and the same chrome bolt kit was still on it ..looking at farther I could tell it had never been apart since I built it. ..I truly believe the balance job done the trick ..there is no comparison after you have one balanced
@@james44mag31 you take out the trigger coil on an evo and bolt in a points backing plate and cam , install the points and condenser , fire it up and ride
@@ckelley63 the electronic ignition can go down without warning , especially in bum fucked Egypt ..and chances are after you go for help your bike won't be there when you get back
I had a 1995 Fatboy. It had the EVO engine with a Mikuni carburetor set up just like the one you have there. I sold it six years ago, and and I could kick myself every day for doing that because I loved that bike it was pretty awesome. I have ridden other newer bikes twin cams, Road kings, street glide. They are nice but it’s not the same as the old Evo fat boy I had. Now I’m looking for the right one to buy. The only thing I did not like about it was that it was a five speed and not a six speed.
got the same bike in 2015. Started with an 87 sporty, still in my garage. Upgraded to an FXR in 2015 and just bought a 2018 FXLR. Can't complain about the new motor one bit, 25k miles on it but dam there's just something about that FXR.
Guzzis are so good you can't lose sticking with that, either, or adding another. They go cheap used because no one knows about them. I have two Evo FXRs and two Evo Sporties and worked on many others as a multibrand mechanic. You'll love the Evo aftermarket. I suggest buying an FXR to grow old with because that was my plan in 1988 and I still ride that bike. (Temp down for a new V124 and a Baker box but the originals are both perfectly sound, I just wanted more ponies.) Buy a later Evo big twin with the Denso starter and splined shaft gearbox (just look for the Denso starter). It's a buyers market so be somewhat picky. Download or buy the factory service manual and parts book for what you've chosen then study while you search. Chop Cult and Harley Tech Talk forums are great resources, while TH-cam is merely a supplement. My nick is farmall on Chop Cult.
I like the handle bars on it I wish my 02 FLSTC had them. I have low ape hangers that was on the bike when I got it. That was my first lesson about twin cams even changing out the handle bars is a pain so I haven't done it yet. I like your bars they are a lot like my 72 FLH police Special.i am use to the low wide bars. .
I hear you. I'm used to 12 to 14 inch apes, but I think the bike itself looked better with the bars that came on it. Almost wish I never changed them out.
I have a '98 EVO Fatboy that I bought new. I put in a Screaming Eagle Cam, 6000 rpm ignition module, free breathing intake and tuned after market pipes. It hits its sweet spot at about 3000 and you had better be hanging on. It's never failed me or required any repairs, and I especially like the fact that it gets 51 MPG. SaddleTramp, you did good on your self. Enjoy.
Well done Tramp. I kinda know how you feel about getting an older bike. I've got an 07 fxd dyna SuperGlide that I'd like to trade for a much older bike. I've had her for about 3 years now, and while I love what she does, my heart will always belong to the panheads. I think you've done well for yourself. Good luck with your new ride. I wish you many happy adventures as you follow your front wheel all over the country.
I'm a "goofball" too cuz I'd totally do the same thing too! No evo carbie for me but my two girls are '05 fuelies. No abs - no Canbus software - no dealer spa treatments either. Keep ridin' friend! J
I have a small Dyna performance shop and you did great. A bolt in cam, single fire ignition and coil, a good set of ignition wires, and a 2 into 1 exhaust will surprise you. Look into the lifter noise, don't neglect it. SHINY SIDE UP BROTHER.
I really enjoyed this clip. In my opinion, you made an outstanding move. I started on Ironhead Sportys, a 77 then a 78. Moved on to Shovels, an 80 and a 82. I bought my 92 FXSTC in 1998 and THAT'S where I stopped! I will go to my grave owning that bike because I, like you, know that the Evo motor is that good. It's dependable and easy to wrench on. Can't beat it IMO. Congratulations on a very smart move!
I'm with ya. I sold my twin-cam 88in Softail and bought a 1995 Heritage Softail Evo. I wasn't sure about moving away from EFI to a Carburetor but haven't had any regrets!
I don't run any ethanol in anyting carbureted! But ethanol will even eat the rubber hose off going to fuel injection, so you don't need ethanol in anything with a rubber hose on it!
@@stonewall45 fortunately I'm in NC and have a station 1/2 a mile from me that sells non-ethanol. Worst case scenario you have to buy some Lucas ethanol treatment. Walmart has it, it's green. Non-ethanol here is about a buck more per gallon but it's worth it! It was 350 per gallon last year that's premium non-ethanol 93 octane, it's 325 this year. Use Google and find the nearest station to you that sells it and buy 10 or 20 gallons at a time. Treat it with some seafoam if you going to let it sit, seafoam has fuel stabilizer built into it, you can get that at Walmart also. If I'm going on long trips I just carry a bottle of ethanol treatment with me. Sometimes you can't find ethanol free on the road.
I have a roadking 103 and recently bought a 95 fxstc and i get what your saying 100 percent, i feel more excited more happier on that 80 evo then with my modern 103, i really enjoyed working on taking apart the carburator and cleaning it out, i enjoy the more mechanical motorcycle then the modern more electronic motorcycle if you get what i mean. congrats.
I LOVE your new (old) bike. I've always felt that a properly tuned carb has better throttle response than fuel injection (which I hate). I know that FI is supposed to be better in that regard but it doesn't feel that way to me. Also, I think silver and white is a killer color combo. So, all in all, you hit a home run with this deal.
My 97 Fatboy, gives me the same feeling. I currently have a 1973 SS Sprint, that I always wanted, as a kid, but I couldn't afford it then. I have a 1997 Fatboy, a 2009 Street Glide, and a 2021 Heritage 114. The 97 is still my favorite to ride. It just has that vibe, that makes you feel great.
I was fortunate enough to be gifted a 94 Sportster with a few customizations to make it 1388cc and it rips it up. I love the Evo motor and the sound it makes. Congrats on the upgrade.
What a revelation. AMF can be thanked for that Evo motor. As much as they were despised, they did some things right. Anyway, I've ridden Harleys for over 40 years and to me, the Evo is still a "new" engine. I like my Shovel, but if I had to buy a new bike, Evo it will be.
Great looking bike. You did good. I have a 1997 RoadKing, fuel injection. Did a lot of mods ...21” front wheel, z-bars with 4” risers , custom seat, made brackets to move custom 10” coil over shocks forward 5” to give the bike a old look. Then added a hinge rear fender with 1970 fender struts. Remote oil filter and cooler. Wow a lot of work !!! 72 years old and can’t stop. Have fun. “Ride Tight, Be Safe” Rico from Arizona 😎🌴🌵🇺🇸🇺🇸
I think its a nice ride. Once you get them pushrods adjusted or whatever that sound is then the other stuff like mirrors and lightbulbs are small potatoes. I'm 65 ,I've owned 14 different Harleys since 1973. I'm not real mechanical ,and I dont ride far. And now the prostate cancer radiation treatments kinda slow you down a little. I've got a 72 flh dresser " Hannah" it's a rat bike. Completely rusty everwhere, but runs like a Rolex watch. I thought about selling it because I live in the western suburbs 10.minutes outside Chicago. And I cant tolerate the tailgaters and pot holes anymore. But I love her so much I can't give it up. Think I'll move to a location like your at. Looks like Tennessee. That's a nice bike you have, thanks for sharing the video!! Like I always say,it's not how far you ride your bike,it's how cool you look when you get there!!!!!!
Hello my wife and I really enjoy your videos I have a 1995 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic in great shape love riding this bike . Thank you again for all your great videos
I have a 49 Pan hardtail, 80 Shovel FLT(undressed), 03 Wide Glide. I'm totally with you on never buying a new motorsikle, not a fan of what the factory is offering nowadays. Just subscribed, great content. Keep up the great work, thanks.
Oh I have a tale of woe - *stupid* me sold a 97 Dyna Superglide with 40,000 reliable miles on it for a brand new 2015 Indian Scout. Missed the Superglide for the entire 5 years I owned that Scout. So I can totally relate to your trade. I love EVOs.
I did pretty much the same thing in March 2019. Swapped my 2013 FXDWG for a 1987 FLST. Have spent a few weeks sorting out electrical gremlins (starting problems that started to appear as the weather got colder, and got to the point where I couldn't even jump it from the car, and the start solenoid would just chatter). Partner was giving me grief (something along the lines of "you traded a perfectly reliable bike for something that won't start!") but once that was sorted it's so much better to ride, with way more personality. I don't need the latest and greatest, nor do I need to keep chasing more cubic inches. Congratulations on your purchase.
First bike 1990 springer. Still have it, still ride it, still love it. Reminds me of the good ole days when life was simple. I’m 49 and remember all the “old” guys riding shovels wearing their patches “ though I walk through the valley in the shadow of death I will fear no EVO”. They hated em’. Called em’ yuppie bikes. Maybe that was true then maybe not? Nice to see old become cool again. My 2 cents worth. Keep em’ rolling
Im 57 & love the EVO & I love that bike you traded for & I would’ve made the same deal, as long as you’re happy & enjoy that bike is all that matters. I ride a 1995 1200 Sportster & love it, never had any issues with it at all & I ride it hard. Good luck with that beautiful 25yr old gem!
I personally like the tc 88. Got two 67,xxx 60,xxx on the other. Both carb bikes. The cam tensioner is a weak point but other then that love it. Almost bought an evo though.
I have a 95 flstn wouldn't trade it for twin cam! Mine had an issue starting one time and one of the wires was loose on the switch that's what you need to check first! Originally that bike didn't come with those running lights it only had a headlight, turn signals on the handlebars. It also vibrates more because it's a frame mounted engine. And if it has Andrews 27 cam in it or any high-lift Cam and you think it may have stock lifters in it it will only go about 50,000 miles before the lifters lock up! So then you put some fuelly lifters in it. I was younger when I bought mine and the older I get the harder it rides! Wish I had bought a Fat Bob. The way the rear shock setup on those bikes it seems like it's in a bind.
I bought my 1988 FXRS Evolution new and I've always said this was a keeper for life. I have had this bike over 31 years. I wouldn't sell, or trade it for the world. Love this bike. It handles and runs great. I didn't do anything to the engine except put a Makuni carb on it. This bike has spirit. I own a 2007 FLHTC and it's nice, but no where compares to the get up and go my FXRS has. My FXRS has been a very good motorcycle. I have no regrets with purchasing this bike. It has been a pleasure from the first day and will be for many years to come. I also own an old generator shovelhead. Don't miss working on that bike just to go for a ride. The Evolution has been the best bike I've ever owned. I hope you enjoy your new addition as much as I've enjoyed mine.
I enjoyed the video and i get it. No more new bikes here either, especially since ABS, EFI, and the new Harley monoshock frames. I just dont get ecited over the new bikes.
Good looking Nostalgia Special you got. I used to have one just like it. Now i ride a '97 Heritage. I think you did good. I would have traded a Twin Cam for a Evo too.
I had an Ironhead sportster, FLH Shovelhead, two evo's, and just bought an 02 Road King TC88. No complaints about any of them! I agree with you about the new Harley's. I, for one, don't want a big touch screen TV staring at me while I'm riding.
Hey sometimes bigger and newer is not necessarily better...those 80 inch EVOs are nice and make a sweet sounding engine / exhaust rap. Find an Andrews cam....even nicer. Congrats your Nostalgia is beautiful, great bike and color combination...after you sort a few things out she'll be even nicer.
Brand new to your channel, but I definitely dig the content. I love the Evo, as a child of the 80s I grew up with the sound of Shovels and Evos in my ears. Even though I currently have a Twin cam road king, my next purchase will be an evo or shovel for a project build.
Good move man. I am 78 years old and have a 99 Softail Custom that I would never trade. EVO's are the best motor Harley ever made. And it only takes about 15 minutes to change carb jets if you change pipes or anything else. I bought mine 10 years ago with only 17, 000 miles on it. Rode an 84 Iron Head Sportster for 23 years before that.
Thanks for taking us along. Very nice test ride, great sound. I suggest you grouping the videos about this bike in a playlist. It makes it easier to watch all of them in a row (my plan for the next hour or so ;-))
I friend of mine just shared your video because he keeps hearing from me the exact same things you say in your video.Just sell at a bargain price a 2006 street glide and keeping 2 old springlers (89 & 95) and a 71 kawasaki H1A 500.Happy to know Im not the only "krazy"one keeping old evos.Have had a lot of fun riding & working on them.
Great looking bike. My son just bought his first bike, a 1-owner 1993 Evo Heritage Classic with only 18K miles on it, for a steal! It sounds just like my old Shovelhead bikes did, probably because they share the same bottom end and are both single cam. It's all stock and runs great but future plans call for a Mikuni carb and mild cam to improve the performance. 😎👍
Andrews 27 cam is the best for those Evo's! But when you do that, use some fuelly lifters because stock lifters will fail at 50,000 miles, more lift more pressure on those rollers on the lifters!
The Evo is the best engine that the company ever made. Just check inner cam bearing, which must be changed if it's an INA to be replaced by a Torrington. I would not own a TC. (American Virago)
It took AMF 6 years to develop the EVO motor they look at the problems the shovelhead motor had and they created a motor that made more horsepower at a lower RPM and what brand cooler and had better oil consumption they are most reliable big twin motor the motors designs since the separation from AMF have had problems left right and Center the fact that people prefer Evolution Motors to twin cam shows that newer is not necessarily better Evo Motors are rebuildable forever imagine if AMF did not sell Harley all of the Evo Motors would have AMF on the gas tank and everybody would be singing their praises I love my Evo Sportster 25 years old 330,000 miles on her still runs like a top her reliability has surprised me I never thought she would be so good and if it didn't cost so much money I would put a kicker kit on her
SaddleTramp...That is a bold decision and what counts is your happiness and willingness to share this with the world. Good luck on all your projects. I had variety of bikes during my years of aging from teenager in India...Rajdoot, Bajaj Chetak, Vespa, Royal Enfield, Ind-Suzuki...and then in 1993 in USA with Honda Nighthawk 250...got out of that in 1997 and then got back again with 1977 Honda Goldwing..kept it till 2015 and traded that with 2005 HD-FLHTCUI...got some GoPro video lately riding that around Texas...
In response to the guy who thinks that the M8 is junk and will put the company out of business: that is hilarious. Young people like me only own a Harley because they finally caught up in engineering with the M8. Millinials aren't brain dead baby boomers; you can't sell us a motorcycle that costs twice as much as a metric just by saying "it shakes and has an American flag!"
@@alleyoop4465 No, a Harley isn't 4 times as much as a metric bike. If you make a fair comparison between bikes (comparable motor displacements, power-to-weight ratios, functionality options like ABS) then Harley is at the same price point as its metric competitors. Stop comparing the price of a 250cc Honda Rebel to a Harley Softail and acting as though the Harley buyer is stupid for his decision.
@Curtis Sherwood Those two things are why YOUR generation bought Harleys. If the company wants to stay alive, then it must convince MY generation to buy the bikes. For us, we don't want the shake. It is stupid to design a machine to shake itself to death just so that someone having a midlife crisis can convince themself that they are masculine. Millinials want a bike that will roll into a corner with confidence and roll on the throttle without unnecessary vibration. As to why you are upset that the new motor has 4 valves, I don't understand. Why do you hate a more efficiently designed head?
I have a 95...same exact bike in black and silver. Love it. I've owned four Harley's from a 78 FXR to a 2007 FXBDI Dyna. My 95 Evo is the best bike I've ever owned.
I dig it! I've got the same bike, but one year older (1993 FLSTN). Grew up with my dad riding a '93 Heritage Softail and fell in love with the bike at first sight. Now that I'm old enough to own one myself, it's by far the coolest bike I've ever owned. Every time I look at her I have to pinch myself because I can't believe she's mine.
I feel the same way. Got rid of our 01 FLSTF, and am keeping my 98 FLSTS, and my 81 FLH. I love the evo so much better. Can work on it and do easy upgrades. To me vibration isnt an issue, since I cut my teeth in the 60s on British twins. With a cam, higher compression and an S&S Super E, its got enough hp to get me anywhere. Good luck with yours.
The british twins were evil. I had a much "smoother" 1981 Yam 650SH with a knock-off parallel Twin forward inclined and that bike buzzed can't imagine the actual norton or ?? bikes.
Saddle tramp, in 1975 I was driving a very clean Olds 442. A friend had a 1965 Impala that I had a soft spot for. When I told him that I would trade straight across he told me my car was worth more, I knew that and traded. I never regretted it or looked back. My friend ,after 4 twin cams I now am riding a 2003 American Iron horse with a S & S 107 evo and love it. It has c a carb on it and love tinkering with it. My friends, I hope you are enjoying your softail evo....
Beautiful bike I get my first Harley brand new out the show room back in 1986 Softail Custom run like a dream deeply regretted I sold it with 5K mile on it. I just pickup another use 2003 Softail Deuce from a friend been in store since 2008 last week with only 7500 mile on it for $3500 to cheap I can not pass the deal, put on a new battery if fire right up , have many bike BMW boxer and K1100RS before but that old 1986 Softail Evo engine will always have a specials in my heart. Very beautiful bike you have I really enjoy your channel I am fan and subscribe.
I love the old Evo motors. I feel like that's when the company had something to prove and that was the motor they used to prove it. I understand your choice and agree with it whole heartedly. Ride on Brother.
The Evo and Willie G is what saved Harley! Bottom line
You ain't crazy man, 1999 Fatboy is all I need. Evo forever!!!!
I am 66 and have a 1983 Harley Davidson FXWG Shovelhead. I bought it new in 83. I got a Mikuni Carb on mine, it is my only motorcycle and last.
Right on, man. Right on.
I'm a shovel man myself ...love em man.
I still own my 83 FLHS Shovel I bought new. The only problem was the Late model 4 speeds had an issue with leaking .
My favorite Harley is the FA-RT
I can totally relate. I searched for a nice Evo this fall and came home with a 1997 Road King. It had been sitting for some time and only had 13,400 miles. I swapped in a new battery and changed all the fluids and drove it 200 miles back home. I really enjoyed that ride and the way that old machine felt.
It’s a keeper!
Right on, Man! Hold on to her tight.
It's all I have (evo) and Iv never experienced riding the newer Harley's because I'm riding what I can afford...working class here.
Evos are very reliable. Easily can add lot's of HP and my favorite is they are easy to work on.
Evo. Best motor Harley ever made. Easy to work on? Yep. Here's a video of mine simplifying one Evo fix: th-cam.com/video/bkaRUbRLXNY/w-d-xo.html
@@Ken_James_SV Thanks for that.
1998 FXDL here. I dig TCs and M8s but the EVO is the best engine HD has ever made. The build options are limitless
I "lucked" into a '98 FXD about 5 years ago for $3.5k. Low mileage, reason for sale was it tried twice to throw him off if he exceeded 65mph. Fixed problem with new "isolaters". Nice and steady at any speed now. Am a Dyna Grandad
Evos 4 ever!
Sorry for the downvote, I don't mean it but the like counter is at 69 right now and I can't bring myself to like and ruin the meme, much love
What about s&s?
Yes love my evo
Had 88 s.s. on my 04 Indian honest motor for sure
I like bikes with personality. I miss the times as a teenager when you could do anything on a bike or a car by yourself without special equipment.
Dont worry, you dont have to miss it. You can still do it. The market is flooded with bikes from the 80's and 90's that are in great shape ready to rock.
Teenagers work on modern cars (compared to which bikes, all of them, are easy. I'm old too but the key is never get lazy and never stop learning!
Had my 72 electraglide since 1988. I will never give it up. Ya gotta give it some love down in the garage, but it's never let me down.
yup 79 shovel fx and 80 fatboy, wouldnt trade...
the motors will last forever as long as you keep up on oil and rings, the muscle bike you bought was not a good thing for your application ... the COMPLETE ASSHOLE that traded with you should have let you know about the upgrades, it seems like you wanted a stock bike! go back to the seller and kick the shit out of him :) just sayin , you can always bring it back to stock by going to a couple swap meets or just call me up, and i can see what i got in stock... we are like minded bro. !!! 5859440273
dude, you are part of a new wave. i have a '96 road king that suffered a cam bearing failure. we rebuilt the motor, added some really nice stuff like an andrews ev13 cam, and custom painted it a candy teal. while the motor was out, we went through the shocks, wiring, and detailed the frame. today, every time i ride it, someone wants to buy it. i have owned it since new, and at age 73, will never sell it. the local dealer tells me that people are seeking out the evo motor bikes now for the same reasons you did. best of luck with your heritage. ride on.
Indeed....for me, its a 93 FXDL....just did a 1200 mile ride with "0" issues....
Would love to see some pics!
I was exactly the same Doug! Recently bought a 98 evo and loving it 👍🏽
I gotta agree. Besides some lifter and cam bearing issues in the later year evos, theyre absolutely bulletproof. They have the classic harley design and sound with the modern reliability.
Rode a shovel 20 years. Evo best buy I ever made. Should have dumped the shovel sooner.
You're old school. I dig that. She's a beauty. Safe travels man!
I love my ridgid evo. I'm not a rich guy,I'm 50 years old and having some health issues but still can't imagine selling my bike
@GETFUX 55 Wish I could give you fifty thumbs up there pal!
Hear that. In my early 70s, health issues, and don't even want to think of selling my rigid, 4-speed Evo.
64! Hell, I got socks older than you. 78 years young here and looking for an Evo-powered FL of some kind.
@@jimbob7559 congrats to you sir. I sure hope that you find the bike that you are looking for. Wish you the best in what’s coming.
I have the tools in my shop to build Evo engines from the crank pin out. I didn't want to invest in tools to build Twinkies. My newest bike is a '95 FLHR. Evo's are fine engines.
Im with you....i dont need anything but an Evo..and there are plenty out there...i just scored a 98 Dyna wide glide with a stroked 80inch evo.
Hi Kevin. I'm looking at a 97 Road King. How are you liking your 95 FL? Do you find it too bulky? I'm going from a Sportster and Dyna's over the years to the FL. Any thoughts.
Nice, what a deal. I love those older Evo softails, and the one you got looks really good.
Hugh Jorgan
hahahahaaaaa hahahahahahaaaaaaa damn right 🖕 the computerized motosickle
Old school like me UNDERSTAND
keep diggin your Shovelhead motor dude
just ASLin...
Don’t forget that amf designed the evo
Going to the dealership for anything is the last resort in my book. I don't even use their oil if I can help it.
I've got a 84 fxr HD said back rubber mounts were obsolete fuck them cc had them. HD is a shirt company anymore
The dealers tell me how much better I will like the new technology, but the riders tell me that you can't beat an old reliable EVO!
the ONLY good thing about getting old is the wisdom that comes with it I'm with you and will be going back to the EVO
Your passion for motorcycles of yesteryear really speaks to me. You're honest with yourself as to your tastes and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty working on your ride. My hat's off to you sir and you're the essence of a real biker.
Thank you, Vince. Thanks so much.
I'm with ya on this swap. Traded my 2012 twin-cam RK for a '99 Fatboy w/80"Evo. Never looked back. Put 130k trouble-free miles on that evo. Then last spring put in an S&S 111 Evo. Love the power! Love the Evo!
Totally get it.
I bought my FLT Shovelhead in 1982.
Never found a reason to change it.
Good on ya fella..........
I'm glad you got the bike you wanted, man. Its definitely a win win for both of you. I think you got the better end with an awesome looking bike and less mileage. Great stuff, man. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Found a 96 FXDL 3 years ago, only 8K miles on it. Priced right, looks and runs great. Easy to work on. Absolutely love it!
Evo engines...I remember when they came with the revolutionary softail frame...doesn't seem so long ago! You've got your self a fine machine. :-)
To all the hardcore old school traditionalists out there I will say this. Fear No EVO 🔧
haha!
Love the fear no evo. You rock
Needs more CowBell
Come on baby dont fear the evo
fuk those twincams if they were the new wave of motors then the Milwaukee eight would have two cams, they went back to the regular style lower-end because they're better, and then just added 4 more valves...
Maybe so. So far, I'm diggin this one.
@@SaddleTrampTV
My 95 Roadking has 156000 and we still on the road.......
Hope to see you out there. ✌

I love my 97 Heritage. Got rid of the stock carb and put an a as super e carb.. love it64
Egos will always have a place in my ❤. Glad you’re enjoying your new ride! Ride safe wind brother!
Lol all Evo's are electronic ignition why would you even want to put point's in one?
You thinking about a Shovelhead, Evo's where electronic ignition.
@@james44mag31 you take out the trigger coil on an evo and bolt in a points backing plate and cam , install the points and condenser , fire it up and ride
@@ckelley63 the electronic ignition can go down without warning , especially in bum fucked Egypt ..and chances are after you go for help your bike won't be there when you get back
@@donniebaker5984 nah, I'll stay with my electronic ignition crane Fireball! I do know that Chevy points will work in a Shovelhead
You are not a goofball. You are passionate about what you want and found a way to make it happen. That's the recipe for a happy life.
Old school means stay true and original, the only way to go. (1990 softail fxstc evo).
I know what you mean.
I just bought a bike and like you, I bought an older bike. I got me an '84 FXR with an Evo engine. I'm loving it. I like old school.
You have a gem!
got the same bike in 2015. Started with an 87 sporty, still in my garage. Upgraded to an FXR in 2015 and just bought a 2018 FXLR. Can't complain about the new motor one bit, 25k miles on it but dam there's just something about that FXR.
Bought my Guzzi in '86. Stone axe simple. Still ride it. Looking for an Evo before I get too old.
never to old Roman!!! as long as your hips hold up..ha ha ha. (wifey is cry`n) ,bike is a bike... as long as its 2 wheels Only
Guzzis are so good you can't lose sticking with that, either, or adding another.
Beautiful bike. I totally understand, I would have done the same. Your bike breathes Harley legendary history. The new ones not so much in my opinion
No , You didn't make a bad deal there. You got what you wanted and that is nobody elses business. As for my personal opinion..I like it.
Plus now he has a numbered bike! They only made 2700 of those bikes
Enjoy.
Get what you want. Nothing wrong with going old school, that Nostalgia is a beauty!
Got a 1998 1340 Evo.,EV27 Cam,S&S Super E. Will take her to my grave. Congratulations Brother.
Take her to your grave? Be careful what you say bikes tend to do that.
I did the exact opposite in Feb. (well, not exact, i PAID) traded my '96 FLSTN for a '19 FLHC 114 and I'm still sad about it.
I have a 2001 Fat boy I got rid of the cam chains and set it up with gear drive cam. No more problems with cam chains. When from 88 to 95 inch motor.
How does ethanol effect the carborator? Fuel system?
Far as I'm concerned 95 was the last Good Year. That's what I have, flstn numbered bike one of 2700
I don't run any ethanol in anyting carbureted! But ethanol will even eat the rubber hose off going to fuel injection, so you don't need ethanol in anything with a rubber hose on it!
@@james44mag31 How do you avoid ethanol? I'm in Texas, close to Houston and I can't find a gas station that doesn't have it in all the pumps.
Its all about enjoying the people and things around you! As long as you are happy, thats all that counts! Goog luck. Happy riding.
I like my
Shovel, but if I had to buy a new bike, Evo it will be.
I thought the evo came out after Harley bought itself back from AMF
Never mind they were designed while amf owned Harley, but released after
Great looking bike.
I own a 2004 FXDI & a 1991 FXRS, bought them both brand new. Needless to say the FXDI is up for sale.
100% support for your decision!!
Biggest regret was selling my mint 91 FXRS-SP
Have had a 87 evo softail since new best Harley motor ever made period
Hello my wife and I really enjoy your videos I have a 1995 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic in great shape love riding this bike .
Thank you again for all your great videos
Hell, you did good! The EVO is a great motor-I rode my first trip to Sturgis on 1993 Fatboy
Congratulations on your purchase.
great trade. I agree with everything you said about the twin EVOLUTION IS THE SOLUTION
You made a GREAT trade!! I LOVE the 2 EVOS that I have a lot more than my twin cam
Got two 67,xxx
60,xxx on the other. Both carb bikes. The cam tensioner is a weak point but other then that love it. Almost bought an evo though.
Good trade. I'm in the process of rebuilding my 97 Evo. Full rebuild. Either that or a new used bike.
Right on! Very nice machine. Me and the girlfriend just picked up two 1985 Evo's we are gonna keep them forever as well!
You Rock! 👍
Even though I currently have a Twin cam road king, my next purchase will be an evo or shovel for a project build.
lucky guy, Evo are the best period.
In my opinion these are the best bikes I have a 96 Heritage Softail Classic awesome ride great video
Thanks for taking us along. Very nice test ride, great sound.
I suggest you grouping the videos about this bike in a playlist. It makes it easier to watch all of them in a row (my plan for the next hour or so ;-))
Good shit!!! That is the bike I fell in love with as a teenager....
I would pick my evolution over my twin any day.
Had an 88TC and no probs with it but my next will be an Evo. Best engine they made imho
I put over 100,000 miles on my 1988 fxr..with no issues!..old evo's are the best motors!
I had variety of bikes during my years of aging from teenager in India...Rajdoot, Bajaj Chetak, Vespa, Royal Enfield, Ind-Suzuki...and then in 1993 in USA with Honda Nighthawk 250...got out of that in 1997 and then got back again with 1977 Honda Goldwing..kept it till 2015 and traded that with 2005 HD-FLHTCUI...got some GoPro video lately riding that around Texas...
love the single cam evo, copied by M8 except for the 4 valves per cylinder.Congrat, you bought something you love,anEvo.
@@johnraconteur1723 so you'll pay 4 times as much as a metric bike instead. Yep millenials have it figured out.
Miss my old Sturgis Shovel, would rather have another one than my 2012 Dyna
Evo!
Trade for an old evo like this guy
@@edwinkubena9944 😂😂😂
I've got a shovel head sturgis and evo sturgis. Love both of them
yup! it was belt drive? like in the beginnings of belt drive LOL...HAHAHA
Right on!
Awesome! You got yourself a new subscriber
Thanks!!!!

I had a much "smoother" 1981 Yam 650SH with a knock-off parallel Twin forward inclined and that bike buzzed can't imagine the actual norton or ?? bikes.
Your not a goof ball. New stuff is junk. Has no soul.
I agree with Tad. The newer bikes have no soul nor feel like a Harley should in my opinion. Long live the Evo
Right on, man!
How do you bury a twin cam?
With a SHOVEL !
Lets line'm up then
Sup?Wind Dummy ...
