Today is Day 1 of the K2N Stage Race, a 5-day backcountry experience through rural Tanzania, from the slopes of Kilimanjaro to the shores of lake Natron. After 45 hours of travel to get here, we can’t wait to get out on the race course for the prologue today and burn off some pent up energy. But this is Africa, and we're about to get WAY more excitement than we bargained for.

It’s really too bad a GoPro doesn’t have enough battery for a two hour ride. We could have seen the elephant footage!
I don’t know how GoPro has such terrible batteries. One would expect the camera to be on the whole time! 🤷
Honestly we wouldn't have the storage capacity to record the whole time, anyway. We shot a terabyte of footage at this event as it was.

All of your videos through the years have been exceptional...this goes BEYOND!! Excellent editing - and you've given yourself the task of editing four cameras worth of footage???? Bravo Syd, Macky, Joe, and Lo. Grueling cycling, face-to-face with elephants, yet you laugh in the face of danger : ) Love the good vibes and the good fun!! Looking forward to the next stages.
Did I miss the explanation on what the rope is for? Why is it hooked up sometimes and sometimes not? Looks like a pretty wild race, but I am definitely missing some details.
We generally connected it for the climbs and some of the flats. Basically it was a way for Lo and me to go faster because I was able to provide some extra watts for her. You'll see a lot more of it in the day 2 video!

I'm laughing to hard and missing the dialog between the four of you. Mackey seemed all too excited missing out on being first into the single track truly missing out on the elephant siting. I could just imagine the four of you coming to an abrupt stop in the tracks, seeing that. Man, I wish somehow being able to step inside the elephant mind thinking what the heck do these 2 think they are doing.

It was a small race this year with only about 20 racers which was really cool because we got to know everyone else.

The elephant prolly didnt know what to think of bikers.its prolly use to seeing humans but a person on a bike was prolly pretty alien to it.. maybe thats why it got scared and went back into the woods...wow..what a nightmare..I think I woulda soiled my shorts on that one...the terrain looks so awesome.

Crazy adventure (so far).
Droppings. Such a dainty word, Joe, to describe excrement from an animal weighing upwards of 8000 pounds. I guess they do drop a long ways. I tend to use droppings when talking about the tidy piles of fertilizer the rabbits leave in my yard every morning. Great video guys.

What bug sprays were you using, or do they all suck against the native bugs?
We brought some DEET but didn't use it much, the bugs weren't too bad, especially when we were at the base of Kili since it's fairly high elevation

Cool vid! Just the wrong elephant you used from AI. African elephants have different ear shape and head. Now you should come to South Africa!
AI did some mixing and matching. Ears, double lobed head are Asian, the long front legs and massive size is African.
AI is not great with specifics. Things got real weird when we tried to make the second rider female lol.
