Joey, to make life easier on yourself, put plant substrate in mesh bags and hide it under the sand. And you'll need a lot of it as you have Geophagus and a stinging ray your tank. Make "plant islands" here and there along the bottom with mesh bags under the sand. It'll keep the substrate under the sand and there'll be no mixing. Some big swords and some jungle val would look good to in a tank that size.
I did this in my planted 125 gallon geophagus sveni tank. But I only have crypts, swords, lots of anubias and bucephalandra. The cryptocoryne is hanging on but the geophagus are hard on them. There's no way a carpeting plants would survive with them. But the mesh bags worked alright to keep the substrate separated. They just like to show through the sand due to the geophagus moving the sand around

I been reading that water that goes through a softener is not good for the fish but then others say they do it with no problems. Just like to know what you do because it seems to be working. Thanks
That tank is going to look awesome, hell yeah!! I have an 8ft tank and I thought that was great but 16ft phew' fantastic, can't wait to see that one finished 👍💯
Same for the geos. I really don't get why someone with Joey's experience would do a soil tank with carpeting plants in combination with these fish lol.
@@NielsO-t3v I suspect Joey has plans for the non compatible fish. He has talked before about tetras and such maybe he will go that way and put the ray and geophagis elsewhere.
I think you should put in ONE PAIR of guppies. Wait a few weeks and see if you're overstocked, lol. And for filtration, fifty HOB filters all in a row!
I could recommend you easy plants as I only have like 1 inch white quartz sand bottom on my tanks and mediocre light and I use no fetilizers or anything and have tried many plants. Ones that grow really well are Limohpila Sessiliflora(stem), Crytocoryne Beckettii Petchii - its quite a big leafed red stem, green and red leaf one, for me it grows quite big and bushy just in pure sand. Echinodorus Belheri(Amazon sword) grows really tall and dense, in like 5 months its almost 15 inches tall and about 40 leafs all growing out from the middle of the tank and Vallisneria I think I have Gigantea but it grows small for me, when I bought it it was like 1 inch wide but it only grows in like 1cm wide now and is thinner but grows really well. Should add I have soft water also, from Glasgow Scotland, really soft water, so really soft water and no nothing but sand these plants grow well.
To answer your question, yes the Monte Carlo can grow as an epiphyte attached to things. I've had it in a low tech tank without co2 and still managed a carpet so hopefully you get some luck too!
@@shawn1819 ahh that's a shame. It was definitely slow growing but saw changes quicker than that. Not sure what conditions you have but I had an RGB light, it was in a decent space with plenty of light, planted in aquasoil plus I dosed the tank with a basic fertiliser. If any of those things are missing from your setup it might be worth a tweak. I think the main thing is decent light levels and nutrients.
Concrete stands are definitely one of the strongest and easiest to build the strongest of course would be metal according to thickness. But most of us don't have a welder and heaps of metal laying around LOL
C’mon joey that aquasoil is gonna be super expensive and take absolutely FOREVER to get all the nitrates out of your water. Just put a thin layer of soil in the bottom with some root tabs and stuff then cover it in sand. Your geo’s will like it too.
there's a dude, I forget his name now but he used to wear a lab coat in some of his videos and I'm pretty sure his name uses the word aqua somewhere… But he used to use Monte Carlo a lot. And he made a lot of really cool tanks too, you guys should Collab actually that would be sick lol lemme see if I can find his channel edit: his channel name is aquapros
So I built a 14 ft tank on my own, I could lift one end enough to add pipes under to push it in front of the stand, then used a car jack and a combination of blocks and off cuts of plywood to raise it up, then I pushed it onto the stand.
That type of aquascape/soil/plants seems horrible with the fish you have in mind. The geos will sift and dig. The ray would like to do the same I imagine. Why use soil and carpet plants with these kinds of bottom dwelling fish that like to dig? The fish you have in mind for the tank are epic, but would be so much better off with a nature style setup with thinner wood like manzanita and a sand substrate. You could just do a load of floating and rhyzome plants and that would work great
Aquapros did Montecarlo in trees in his avatar tank. He did have CO2 and liquid fertilizer going though, so I don’t know if they could grow passively not in soil

Big cryptocoryne as well.
They have strong roots and will be able to take a beating once anchord in the mesh bags
Jungle val will survive almost any fish lol. Once those roots are grown in, it's in to stay until you pull it all out
I did this in my planted 125 gallon geophagus sveni tank. But I only have crypts, swords, lots of anubias and bucephalandra. The cryptocoryne is hanging on but the geophagus are hard on them. I love your enthusiasm, Joey
Love watching 👀 your videos from Colchester Essex UK 🇬🇧
This build is going to look amazing when complete. Looking forward to watching it come to fruition 👏
Joey will decide to move the 16 foot tank when it’s 3/4 full of water.
Great job and Fantastic informative narration.
Will the ray and the severums not destroy the plants ?
They will. The geos will also likely uproot everything.
That Lilaeopsis will grow fine, I have it in a low light, low tech tank and it thrives. Looking forward to this new tank!
Who know if you’ll see this but you should try bigger plants like the huge Anubias and crypts
@@1inchtankbarrel834 I use Anubias and Bucephalandra and added some C. wendti recently! I'm also trying out Schismatoglottis prietoi too
What type of paint did you use, and did it cover the wood in 1 coat?
Have you tried leaf zone by API or root tabs? they work wonders and the plants come out so vibrant and healthy
Did you cement the concrete blocks?
Ahhh joey please keep all the Aquariums they all gonna look great !

Loved the video dude. Going to be sweet. Excited for what’s in that box from Aqua decor .. members only get a sneak peak tho!
Yeah monticarlo plant will grow on wood and rock to just like an Anubis 👍
Brilliant ideas from all of us in London 🇬🇧
Love the vid king imma start mine soon
It's gonna be phenomenal
This tank is going to be epic with that combination of fish! Hopefully, we'll see some large groups of schooling fish in there also!
I may have to visit once it's planted...🔥 epic

glue the monti to anything with some superglue, works great on rocks
Can’t wait to see the 16’, should be epic. Can ya give us a video fish tour, it’s been a bit…
Thr balans between light, Co2 is important. I never use extra nitrate. I use the lean method.
What kind of wood was that again Joey? Really Big😂
MC will grow in soil,on wood and as a floating plant. Could plant helanthium quadricostatus will carpet and is very easy to grow.
Have Rod help you move the tank after you build it!
keep up the good work
How to u think carpet and a stingray will work
That tank looks amazing Joey just asking did you consider doing it saltwater lol that would of been epic
How much does it cost to run this thing
Wow... what a built its gonna be

Hi from Malaysia
Your Geophagus will need sand rather than soil Joey.
Yes, definitely
He said there will be white sand in there
@user-pl6ns4hs7y Should be at least 75% Sandy bottom. And best of luck keeping plants.
You think he doesn’t know how to care for geos? 😂
@topdogtaz218 I assumed he did. But the plans for this tank suggests otherwise.

Maybe do jungle to desert from one side to the other
I was wondering why you don’t just buy steel stands then I remembered your channel name
Where would you even get large, custom metal stands? I'd expect having them custom made would be *very* expensive - at least here in Canada.
So aren't the sting rays going to rip up your carpeting plants?
monte carlo can grow as a mat with no support even, especially if the mat is anchored somewhere
Am I the only only one hearing what he said at the end? 😂 🏃♂️🏃♂️
ive montecarlo growing on flower pot/cave in my aquarium
Monte Carlo grows also as an epiphyte.
I would love to see a giant school of rummy nose tetra!
Hey Joey. We at Aquarium Services LLC can ship you those plants for a fraction of the cost. We'll special order whatever you like. Located SoCal.
Dwarf sagitarria will actually get quite long as it gets older. Even under higher lighting.

Put a very dirty fish in the plant grow out. No water changes. Let the nitrates climb up high and they'll grow a bunch

Montecarlo will grow anywhere in fact you can grow any plant as an epiphyte iv grown crypts on wood as long as you dose ferts in the water column
