    As has become a tradition on this channel, here is "How to Sound Like Chopin," in celebration of his birthday today (March 1, 1810) and "Happy Birthday" in the style of his waltzes. Stick around until the end for bonus ideas!
    Please note: This type of analysis and imitation is purely for educational and entertainment purposes to celebrate this day. Also, if you didn't notice, I recorded this on a Yamaha digital piano because I'm currently out of town and don't have access to an acoustic piano -- but I actually loved recording on it! :)

      Nice video, something interesting I always wanted to learn from chopin is how he transforms simple melodies into complex scales with extensive ornaments, I believe he used to teach this to his students and would love to learn it myself, sadly there is very little on it. Kinda similar to the V-I resolutions you showed near the end. Also Transformational harmony is incredibly important in Chopin's harmony, but its seldom taught. People think its outdated/incorrect

      I started making music at 18 and now I'm 23 and last year I started learning the piano, my adventure is more like a compositional one rather than performing, I tend to compose and I realized that reading music is a must to acquire other further skills so I'm also trying to improve myself on sight-reading and reading music in general. Start with learning to read music staff, it would really enhance your understanding on theory. All the best to you. Greetings from Turkey!

    One of my favorite characteristics of Chopin's music is how he modulates unexpectedly. I'm not a piano player so I can't give an example in music terms (other than modulation) so I will use a metaphor: It's like you're walking along a main street, you turn a corner quickly and suddenly you're in a different neighborhood with a completely different character. I love that and he seems to do it more than any other composer I'm aware of.

    Very good crash course on Chopin's Waltzes! Wonderful editing too! :D
    In addition, I would add that Chopin's use of the Neapolitan often involves it being is ROOT POSITION rather than the more common Neapolitan 6th. He embraces the leaping tritone to the V. I'm sure you know this, but I imagine those that are only familiar with the standard method of N6 might be missing out.
    Another aspect is that Chopin does not care about AVOID TONES. AT ALL. He had absolutely no problem using the dissonant minor 9th interval in any manner, nor did he care if he used cross relations in different voices. For example, playing the minor 7th of a given chord in the left hand right as a Major 7th is used as an embellishment leading into the Root of the chord in the right hand. Very crunchy... very crunchy indeed. Sometimes this results in a minor 9th other times in a minor 2nd. Either way... CRUNCH!
    Counterpoint is also a big part of Chopin's style and I think that a lot of times people assume other wise sense he voices his accompaniment so vertically. It's not written so much in the conventional "Canon and Fugues" format, which is only a type of counterpoint, but in the more general sense of controlling individual voices. And despite all of the chromaticism and wild passages, it is very often that he treated dissonances and embellishments in a rather traditional manner which make for some painfully beautiful moments!
    Again, Nahre, great stuff!

    Enchanting! Nothing can easily compete with the quality of this material, really, recently I have been looking at so many music theory books from beginner to intermediate-advanced and their way of presenting the information is not that systematic and creative at the same time and they are not interactive, easy to understand because they lack the visual material most of the time. What you're trying to do is so valuable that even textbooks can envy and take it as a magnificent example of how you should do it! It's like picture child books which depict Chopin's greatness! Since I have discovered your "How to Sound Like" series, I became a more of an active listener rather than listening to these great composers' work passively. You've helped me to open this "third ear"! The hearing, as Joachim E. Berendt emphasized as well, rather than seeing is the key of a spiritual experience of consciousness and I am sure that so many of us as humans out there don't attempt to hear more closely. Even one and only Stravinsky said that "Hearing is an effort, and just to hear is no merit..." Thank you so much Nahre for providing this high-quality material which enhances my hearing abilities, there are so many details that constitute these great composers' works and you can see it only if you can show a remarkable effort! Btw, it's great that even though you don't have your natural environment around, you can easily adapt yourself to new ones with the same success! I really appreciate the hard work! Thank you Nahre!! 😊🧠🎶

    This is absolutely spot on. You've done a terrific job in taking the core features of his pieces and implementing them on different stuff. I think I get how you approach the music while you're listening for reappearing patterns in different pieces and this video has also inspired me to dissect other pieces from other composers as I find this idea extremely intriguing and useful for just overall researching and understanding different approaches to composing music. This is great content, keep up the great work, Ms. Sol!

    What a great find this channel is. So much useful information for the tourist of, or newcomer to, composition in classical styles. That's not to say that she's unfairly dumbing things down; her videos seems extremely comprehensive for what can be done in a TH-cam tutorial. And I imagine many pop musicians would benefit considerably from absorbing some of the lessons these videos contain, as I have! Kudos.

    May I ask how long it took you to become able to improvise in Chopin's style this good and smooth? I'd really love to figure it out for me because Chopin is my favorite composer and I'd be over the moon if I could play on spot something similar to what he would compose

      Just a small reminder: the composers of old like Chopin were very good, but they spent a loooot of time writing music, and most of it wasn't heard. The music you hear is not everything the composer did, but all he wanted to present. Sure, Chopin probably was a beast at improvisation, but his works weren't just shat out in an afternoon one after the other, so don't set your expectations too high when you say you want to improvise like Chopin. To relate to the video, the entire piece here was probably not improvised but finely curated, and if you'd ask them to improvise they'd start repeating itself after a while... But I'd like to hear some tips too!

    Oh I love this type of videos, the only thing I could say is that I find your writing a bit compact compared to Chopin's if you understand what I'm saying, it's like if you wanted only to demonstrate all the types of "tricks" that use Chopin before doing a real composition in the style of Chopin even if.... That's kinda the goal of these videos so... Nevermind, awesome work :')

    • @Inubiz
      @Inubiz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same here. Even tho I can definitely hear some chopin in it, I think it's too much or a little too colorful for it to be a real chopin piece. Nonetheless it's really nice to litsen to and maybe aspire one day to be able to improvise to this magnitude.
