  • Kon'nichiwa People of TH-cam! I am Japanese and I playedThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Its a 2023 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017), Tears of the Kingdom retains aspects including the open world environment of Hyrule, which has been expanded to allow for more vertical exploration. The game's story follows Link's efforts to assist Princess Zelda in preventing Ganondorf from destroying Hyrule.

I’d have to say my biggest complaint was how repetitive the sky Islands were. The first main island was so unique and diversified then the rest was just modifications to a couple generic templates.

    • @bostontowny4life744
      @bostontowny4life744 ปีที่แล้ว

Ahh dude… shut up. Seriously. They created a massive world where there’s not only a ground level, but a sky level and a underground level. And people like you complain because not every single little location didn’t have 500 extra hours spent on it to make it different enough.
It’s just so ridiculous. Developing a video game is incredibly difficult. Especially one as massive as this with the hardware they’re using. People complained in the first game because enemies weren’t different enough and there wasn’t enough cave and dungeon like areas to explore. What they do? They improved those things ten fold while also creating an entire sky and underground maps.
But nope. Not good enough. Nothing will ever be good enough for gamers. But then, ALSO, gamers will complain about the “crunch” that devs are put through 🤣. This is why I could never be a game dev. Because gamers, for the most part, are absolutely miserable people.
Hell I would say that TOTK has much more variety than even Elden Ring. I mean, what was the side content in Elden Ring? Discovering caves that all looked the same, fighting similar enemies, then a boss you’ve fought 5 times prior to that.
This is where the industry is at right now when it comes to open world games with the technology and time that developers have to crate these worlds. If it’s not enough for you then move on to another genre of video games.

I dun agree with his rant on fusing weapons as i find it very meaningful to strategically fuse weapons not just for fighting but mining, chopping. collecting monster parts is now incentivised if you want better weapons, you have to fight them and the cycle continues. Capitalistic yes, but fun. It brings up so much fun using certain fuse items with shields as well.
He has a point with enemies all the samie. A few more in game but no enough.
He also has a point with underworld being monotonous cos its quite true, once you see once, you've seen all as far as "Seeing Only" is one's main concern. But the game fixes that problem by fusing the underworld nicely to the progression of the game and actually for me, strategising on my items to get around, when to use arrows, when to use giant seeds and figuring out how to conquer the terrain is amazing. If not it will be just walking sim. Here, you are "obligated" as he mentioned to get creative.. you can't be lazy in your brain to play this cos getting from one place to another constantly is a puzzle solving experience. The whole world is one massive dungeon that needs problem solving to progress and it is highly engaging. i'm 50 hours in and still engaged.. thats no small feat for a game.

My relationship with the franchise comes from childhood, I played the classics of the Nes/Snes, N64, I really like the GC games and I am a supporter of Skyward Sword, I know that the game is far from being the most appreciated by people, but something about it captivated me quite a bit.
As for Breath of Wild, I like the game, but I never finished it, I feel too overwhelmed, exploring the map is the best part of the game, but the very purpose of shrine all the time to increase life and stamina is something tiring, I would easily exchange 100 shrines for 10 dungeons with a beginning, middle and end, the game's loot does not attract me, for the simple fact that everything is disposable in the end, the game shines in many aspects, but unfortunately, none of them are the brilliance I've seen in previous games, in terms of world building, story, puzzles, important items, bosses and the fact that each dungeon is unique.
I agree that the combat could be better, but I understand they didn't change that, it remains classic, but when the combat is so basic, in a game that is much longer than usual for the franchise, it makes me see no reason to invest so much time in something that makes me repeat the same thing throughout the game.
As I said, I didn't finish the game, I believe I reached about 70% of the game, but what I did most was look for different things on the map, I don't regret having invested time in the game, it made me understand what that people liked. But after 6 years, I expected something different, I got used to the franchise not repeating itself (in this case I mean BOTW and TOTK), I know there are elements that will always be repeated, but at the same time, everything was always unique. I'm waiting for what will come later, because TOTK made BOTW look like a draft of the original idea, and no other Zelda had made me feel that way for previous games, I always saw each of them as their own idea.

I'm a huuuuuuuuge fan of Zelda, like a die-hard fan, but holy shit did I agree with Ranton here. It's not only the fact that they had 6 years, but they already had stuff made when BOTW was released. The combat should have definitely been improved, and they should have put more care into the Sky and the Underground, maybe something like actually new people/races living there, more new enemies, and more dungeons with better goals to complete them. They definitely could have tried harder, but I guess they knew it was gonna successed either way since BOTW was so good and such a success. Still love playing the game tho, just not as innovative as BOTW was for the franchise and gaming in general.

But all of the other reviews seemed like they had amnesia when talking about ToTK as if we didn't just get the awesome Elden Ring and BoTW before that.
I always thought it felt like DLC for BoTW and this video basically proves my fears. It doesn't help that it took so long to make and that it costs 70$.
I feel like the underground map was just added cause they felt like the sky islands were not enough. Infact I don't think what they added to the game justifies it's 70$ price tag and unlike BoTW, which was a necessity at the time, I feel like I won't miss out much by not playing this game.
I suppose for those that have never played BoTW, they could instead jump into ToTK for the "special edition".

@@bagdaja6881 This is exactly why I love totk. It doesn't feel too different from the original but the new mechanics just flow so well into the gameplay loop and keep it interesting for me. If anything this is what I wanted from a sequel, nothing too drastically different from the first but still well designed and interesting. However, I wouldn't want to see a third botw style game. I'd like to see a more linear Zelda game next tbh.

Also because climbing is so de emphasized the way I interacted with the open world of TOTK was much different from BOTW so they didn't even feel similar to me.

FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT! Great review, even greater editing as always. 👌
Botw was a genuine 10 for me at the time and while playing Totk is a lot of fun I get so frustrated with it's lack of changes and in parts downgrades that it's personally way worse to me, despite a good amount of upgrades.
One thing I can't believe you didn't mention though (since that's typically something I think you'd be annoyed by) is the godawful menu navigation. The fact that you need to drop items to fuzionite and can't do it in the inventory. That you can't drop them directly from the inventory and that you can't hold them from the drop menu. The fact that because the bow management is so finicky, you sometimes stick shit on your arrows when you wanted to drop them and vice versa. The fact that you can't just craft arrow types and need to scroll through your entire inventory or change the sorting order to find certain items, mid combat. The fact that you need to walk up to your companions to even activate their abilities.
I also think the abilities this time sre just kinda worse.. like I think fuzionite should've just been a crafting menu, not an ability. Ultrahand is really fun and creative, but there's next to no extrinsic motivation to build anything remotely creative. The puzzles requiring it are genuinely brain dead and even when you build stuff for traversal it just vanished after not that long, which is one of the strangest design decisions. The time reverse thing is so incredibly situational, since you can just use ultrahand to move shit, and plainly inferior to Botw's best ability: stasis. And then you have ascend... you can go up stuff I guess... it was kinda necessary with the inclusion of caves, but it's usefulness is also very limited since you can just climb anything anyways.
You touched on how iterative Totk is, but I would even go so far as to say it's just irritatingly repetitive. Even the stories surrounding the dungeon might as well be the same as in Botw, it's so stange.
They added more story and quests, but it all boils down to shitty 'go over there and talk to this person and then that person' and so on.
When it comes to the big 3 criticisms that most had for Botw (lacking enemy variety, story and dungeons) they barely improved on any of them. You talked about the dungeons and enemies and I about the president day story already, but they again made the only interesting part of the story into memories (at least they're not a pain to collect this time).
I also find it weird they just don't even acknowledge the fact that all of the last game's tech was just replaced by "new" stuff.
Also I miss the guardians, they were super scary (their theme still makes me antsy), pretty much the only enemy where you couldn't just perfect dodge and even made use of parrying, horse combat and updrafts. They were a perfect encapsulation of Botw and they don't really have an equivalent replacement.
Besides that, you pretty much encapsulated my thoughts perfectly. I think I'd still five it an 8 tho but I'm also not done yet..

Totk has a hidden xp mechanic. The more enemies link kills he gains xp, and when he hits a breakpoint the color and strength of the enemies increases, as well as the quality of the weapons and parts and chest pickups.
There are also pristine weapons in the game, but you have to work for them, so they actually feel valuable. You can repair weapons now and store them at your house so you can repair and save strong weapons you've designed.

I have put 120 hours into this game and it’s a great game, yes, but I think it’s a terrible sequel and just like BotW it’s a terrible Zelda game. Taken in complete isolation it’s a 10/10 but considering the $70 price tag, 6 year wait, and similarities to BotW. It’s a 6/10 product. Very lazy, yet charging full price.

I think an 8/10, or maybe a very minimal 9/10 would be a better rating on its own merits. But it is a valid point of criticism to see this as an expansion that carries too many of the shortcomings of the previous game. Is great, but deeply flawed to be one of the absolute best games.

@@Tohlemiach Yeah, I can definitely see your argument. Even without Elden Ring or Breath of The Wild, The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 feel like better realized games, not just open worlds, as a whole. Sure, all of them have flaws and shortcomings, but the quality of the content is so consistently strong that ToTK pales in comparison.
Of course that's preference, since some may not like those games. I personally put ER and TW3 over those two Zelda's anyways.
