You nailed it about the art style man. This obsession of American game devs with grounded realism is so tiring at this point. I would also mention the outrageous pricing in the ingame store and the fact that now they're selling fatalities.
The art styles just seemed to evolve over time. I don’t see it as they tried to do something distinctive from each game, they just tried to make the games look graphically and artistically better as the technology allowed them. MK vs Dc and 9, have relatively the same art style. Then Injustice 1 and MKX had similar art style to one another, and finally Injustice 2, MK11 and MK1 are pretty much the culmination of how they want their games to look, so that’s why they’re not insanely different from one another. At least in my opinion. It would be neat tho if for Injustice 3 they adopt a more cell shaded comic/cartoon style for their art design. However their next project will likely look just like MK1 with very minimal improvements. Like I said I think they’ve just finally found their look.

MK1 has so much good going for it, but its so dry of content and doesn't give the player much incentive to keep grinding for stuff especially compared to the days of 9 and X. Now thankfully its not as monetized to hell like 11, but its still not as exciting to play as the older games sadly.
Its interesting that you think the mechanics of MK11 were better than MK1 or MKX. From the vast majority of the community, MK11's biggest problem was the system mechanics, especially the replacement of Combo Breaker, Air Drop or whatever it was called. It ruined the flow of the match because at specific points of a combo, a person could Air Drop at a specific time, and then punish the player for daring to do a combo.
And these problems that you mentioned could've been fixed if nrs continued to support MK11. The formula was there. It just needed to be perfected. The mechanics in MK1 is a downgrade.

They just needed to add more in, so it's more risky to break out of combos, which nrs abandoned. Combo breakers have always been controversial in the fgc for years. Use Reiko as an example. He breaks out of your combo, resets the distance you worked for, then has the advantage to keep you out in range with his projectile. Now answer me this, what are your options for stopping players from breaking after 3 bars?........its what I thought

As an avid mk fan and one who played mk11 i agree with most of your points except about the mechanics...if you talk to an fan who played mk11 most would tell you that the mechanics was too many and too scrubby... providing way too many options that was not needed and made playing pple a pain in the ass, for me the only redeeming fact about mk1 is the mechanics, which is simple and more grounded...except of course kameos
The mechanics in MK1 is just or even more scrubby than mk11. Lao hat? Stryker bombs? Reiko building meter just for throwing stars? MK1 is basically your gimmick Vs my gimmick..nothing is raw like MK9 & MK11. Backdashes in MK1 is just as fast as forward dashes, for zoners to flush you out, compared to MK11 where you can wavedash in? All they had to do was continue the support for MK11 and fix the games problems.

I hear you on the kameo stuff. I was hoping they would have just gone back to the tag team system and, like you said, have every single kameo also be playable and vice versa. I think the kameo idea came a bit too far into development for them to ship the game with all these characters fully playable and with full dialogue and such
I’m the part of the community that loves the kameo system. The fact that it’s so cool how you can summon in a pairing thag best fits your character. Everyone has a cameo that works best with them leading to a variety in what you see. Many hero’s that normally would be dogshit in other mks have kameos that can extend their combos in really cool ways.

Totally agree, got MK1 on pre-order, I'm a huge MK fan since I was like 3 years old, and it was the biggest letdown in my life. I'm proud to say that I've played and enjoyed every single MK game until this one, imo the most boring one. Haven't played it since October and I'm not planning to get back at it ever again.

I think this is his first review that I really disagree with. While what he said about invasions and the art-direction is true, the gameplay in MK1 in my opinion is the best its ever been and the kameo system, while complicated, does give the player more control and makes matches more interesting. Meh. To me mkx is the most complicated and interesting in series. So much options from moveset to use, art direction of it suits mortal kombat 'cause it always was marketed like a cold and dark place with gore. It's just that the story mode lacked any suspense or anxiety that the world will go to shit and everything, you knew exactly from the very first chapter that it's going to be one of those plot armor bs stories that no one gives a shit about. My boy Erron Black got absolutely DESTROYED in story mode and later in mk11 was straight fucked. I really hate nrs for making a cool ass character that will get nothing in the end, it's just a concept, and as a fact wasted potential that will always keep me mad about. But yea, most of it is all my opinion

Abgesehen davon hatte ich auch das Gefühl dass die Entwickler überhaupt keinen Bock mehr hatten weiter an dem Spiel zu arbeiten und sich dachten Hauptsache schnell fertig werden und auf den Markt schmeißen. A lot of the content stuff I agree, but Kameo System is the most refreshing and original mechanic in fighting games in years! You already have each main character with their full set of moves plus air combos. And then Kameos add about 3 moves on top of that. It allows for variation for every character in such a deep and nuanced way, which is an infinite improvement over the variation system of the past 2 games. A single Kameo move is predictably the same move every time, but changes the strategy depending on which main character it's used with. Different mains use the same Kameo move differently. So while you can be familiar with every Kameo character, their combination with different mains adds exciting unpredictability to the combat mechanics. Pro players are constantly surprised by new combos and techniques they never thought possible, because some random person decided to combine a random Kameo move with a random main move. And while the combo possibilities might not be mathematically endless, it sure feels that way! And this is really MK1's strength... combat depth. And I know this can introduce bugs and exploits, but that's something that get fixed over time and is just the nature of competitive games. I get that casuals may not like it, but they're just there to push buttons and have some gory shallow fun, which is a totally legit way to enjoy a video game. You don't have to use Kameos. The game plays the exact same way as previous MK games if you don't use the Kameo button. But Kameos add so much more possibilities for those of us in the fighting game community who want to explore the combat deeper and get better. If you get bodied by someone who uses Kameos, it's because they're just better than you at the game. And Kameos allow them to reach an even higher level of skill. It raises the hypothetical bar. Remember that this is a competitive game at it's core, and competitive players are the core community of this franchise.
I dont agree, kameo system here are lames and lazy. I dont like fighting assist. By far tag team would be better and Amazing as mk9 (the best of all mk) , but not kameo style. That why i dont play it anymore

It also felt more unique with the gear system it had because player characters felt personal to them but it was too grindy for sure. MKX and 11 is the sweet spot going forward, they just needed some tweaking. 12 just feels unfinished to me.
Competitively I actually really like this game compared to MK11. I never liked the offensive and defensive meter and I thought Krushing Blows were the dumbest thing ever. It made gameplay incredibly boring. I don't think the Kameo system is by any means perfect, but personally I will always take MK1 over MK11.
To give credit where its due, the changes to Baraka and Reptile were positive all around. Both are actually interesting characters now who also happen to be good guys. Its a *massive* step up from how the last couple of games treated them, Reptile in particular.
When i play with friends we never use the cameo system... would love a option to disable it. Also Homelander, Omniman and John Cena make no sense in that DLC. Just put Chuck Norris in with infinite life and one hit kill :D

I hear you on the kameo stuff. I was hoping they would have just gone back to the tag team system and, like you said, have every single kameo also be playable and vice versa. I think the kameo idea came a bit too far into development for them to ship the game with all these characters fully playable and with full dialogue and such
The kameosc came off terrible becuz at first they were so unbalanced and u couldn’t play certain kameos characters with other certain main fighters.
I hate anime fighting games especially ones with assist, so I already took this game less seriously when they announced the kameo system.
I’m the part of the community that loves the kameo system. The fact that it’s so cool how you can summon in a pairing thag best fits your character. Everyone has a cameo that works best with them leading to a variety in what you see. Many hero’s that normally would be dogshit in other mks have kameos that can extend their combos in really cool ways.

Totally agree, got MK1 on pre-order, I'm a huge MK fan since I was like 3 years old, and it was the biggest letdown in my life. I'm proud to say that I've played and enjoyed every single MK game until this one, imo the most boring one. Haven't played it since October and I'm not planning to get back at it ever again.

I think this is his first review that I really disagree with. While what he said about invasions and the art-direction is true, the gameplay in MK1 in my opinion is the best its ever been and the kameo system, while complicated, does give the player more control and makes matches more interesting. Meh. To me mkx is the most complicated and interesting in series. So much options from moveset to use, art direction of it suits mortal kombat 'cause it always was marketed like a cold and dark place with gore. It's just that the story mode lacked any suspense or anxiety that the world will go to shit and everything, you knew exactly from the very first chapter that it's going to be one of those plot armor bs stories that no one gives a shit about. My boy Erron Black got absolutely DESTROYED in story mode and later in mk11 was straight fucked. I really hate nrs for making a cool ass character that will get nothing in the end, it's just a concept, and as a fact wasted potential that will always keep me mad about.
But yea, most of it is all my opinion

Es ist selten dass ich komplett mit jemandem übereinstimme aber hier trittst du alles perfekt auf den Punkt. Es fühlt sich im großen und ganzen wie ein großer Rückschritt an. Die Kombos in der Luft reißen für mich überhaupt nichts raus und auch die Tatsache dass es einfach weniger Kombos im allgemeinen gibt, ist eine herbe Enttäuschung. Komischerweise habe ich auch das Gefühl dass alles irgendwie schnell zusammen geschustert wurde, zb. die Story Kampagne. Beim Ende dachte ich mir so:
"das war's jetzt? Wird der Rest per Kostenpflichten dlc jetzt fortgeführt? Billig!"
Abgesehen davon hatte ich auch das Gefühl dass die Entwickler überhaupt keinen Bock mehr hatten weiter an dem Spiel zu arbeiten und sich dachten Hauptsache schnell fertig werden und auf den Markt schmeißen. Keine Ahnung, denke Story durchspielen hat erstmal gereicht und ich greife wieder auf For Honor zurück als Kampfspiel, bleibt für mich einfach das Beste☝🏻

A lot of the content stuff I agree, but Kameo System is the most refreshing and original mechanic in fighting games in years! You already have each main character with their full set of moves plus air combos. And then Kameos add about 3 moves on top of that. It allows for variation for every character in such a deep and nuanced way, which is an infinite improvement over the variation system of the past 2 games. A single Kameo move is predictably the same move every time, but changes the strategy depending on which main character it's used with. Different mains use the same Kameo move differently. So while you can be familiar with every Kameo character, their combination with different mains adds exciting unpredictability to the combat mechanics. Pro players are constantly surprised by new combos and techniques they never thought possible, because some random person decided to combine a random Kameo move with a random main move. And while the combo possibilities might not be mathematically endless, it sure feels that way! And this is really MK1's strength... combat depth. And I know this can introduce bugs and exploits, but that's something that get fixed over time and is just the nature of competitive games. I get that casuals may not like it, but they're just there to push buttons and have some gory shallow fun, which is a totally legit way to enjoy a video game. You don't have to use Kameos. The game plays the exact same way as previous MK games if you don't use the Kameo button. But Kameos add so much more possibilities for those of us in the fighting game community who want to explore the combat deeper and get better. If you get bodied by someone who uses Kameos, it's because they're just better than you at the game. And Kameos allow them to reach an even higher level of skill. It raises the hypothetical bar. Remember that this is a competitive game at it's core, and competitive players are the core community of this franchise.

It also felt more unique with the gear system it had because player characters felt personal to them but it was too grindy for sure. MKX and 11 is the sweet spot going forward, they just needed some tweaking. 12 just feels unfinished to me.

Competitively I actually really like this game compared to MK11. I never liked the offensive and defensive meter and I thought Krushing Blows were the dumbest thing ever. It made gameplay incredibly boring. I don't think the Kameo system is by any means perfect, but personally I will always take MK1 over MK11.

To give credit where its due, the changes to Baraka and Reptile were positive all around. Both are actually interesting characters now who also happen to be good guys. Its a *massive* step up from how the last couple of games treated them, Reptile in particular.
