- Visit the Downton Abbey Castle (Highclere Castle) as well as Highclere estate & Highclere show with Guns, Dogs, Horses and traditional English countryside attractions. Visit Rules Restaurant where Downton Abbey was filmed and the aristocratic feel and look still exists - they offer traditional game meat such as rabbit, grouse, venison and pheasant. Rules was established in 1798 and has maintained a turn of the century interior which makes it ideal for filming dramas from that period.
Downton Abbey was filmed at Rules Restaurant 3 times:
1. Series 3 Episode 7 taking place in 1920
2. Series 5 Episode 8 taking place in 1924
3. Series 6 Episode 3 taking place in 1925
Highclere Castle is famous for being the primary filming location for the television series "Downton Abbey". Downton Abbey is a period drama that depicts the fictional Crawley family and their servants in the early 20th century. The show explores the intricacies of class, social hierarchy, love and societal changes during that era.
The Highclere show is held during the spring break bank holiday on the Highclere estate. Attracting a fusion of families and sports enthusiasts the show has a range of countryside attractions, "have a go" activities, sporting competitions and children's activities. The show celebrates country living and lifestyle. There are many contests focused on hunting dogs and shot gun shooting. There are falcons, fly fish demonstrations, bands and even sky diving. Traditional English country estate clothing is available.

Hi Mike this was great and what a fascinating place. I've not seen Downton but It looks so gorgeous from this video and I loved your music :) Such a gorgeous place and grounds . Interesting to see the shooting section. Loved the marching band and the vintage machines and we love watching dog shows 😃The resturant looked brilliant and now I want a classic English dinner ! I’ve never watched Downton Abbey but I think it would be right up my alley as I absolutely love historic fiction. What an incredible castle. The grounds are so manicured and vibrant. Wow you can go clay shooting, how neat! Love the dogs! Rules restaurant established in the 1700s - WOW! That is so amazing!! I can see why they filmed there. Fantastic video as always! How fun! I have to admit that I have never watched Downton Abbey, but my Mom and sister did and they loved it. The castle does look pretty amazing and I can see how it would be a perfect setting for movies and TV shows from the period. The festival looked very fun and I especially loved seeing the springer and brittany spaniels on the agility course. The dining area looked wonderful too. I've only watched a bit of the show, but I definitely recognized the castle as soon as I saw it. What a fun place to go, especially if you're an avid Downton Abbey viewer. So, did you plan this portion of the trip or did you happen upon it. I was surprised that the restaurant wasn't more crowded. It seems like it would have reservations booked out for months. It really does look like something out of a movie set. Awesome video, watched and liked, thanks for sharing!
