    Hopefully more manufacturers will be willing to send me subs to check out, there are only a handful that I'm interested in. I generally need a little longer because I give about a month to allow for break in alone. This is one case where the extra time would have allowed me to sort out the weird anomaly with the response curve. It really bothers me that I couldn't sort it out for certain for this review.
    I'm pretty sure the curve would have been corrected had I run room correction again. The only other thing I could think of is MAYBE Low Frequency Containment "LFC" was on, which reduces the low end response, but from past experience, I would expect it to be more of a dramatic change. LFC cuts a LOT of bass off, even on the lowest setting.
    *Update* I'm fairly certain now that I did have LFC engaged in the lowest setting (LFC 1) based on taking graphs with the current subs. Very similar taper. I must have turned it on trying to cut down the infrasonic bass late at night and just forgotten.
    None of that really matters though, this sub did great! The depth of presentation was ideal, both before and after room correction. The anomaly has no impact on my opinion, aside from the infrasonic issue. With more time, I probably could have figured out a hack to reduce the infrasonics, but maybe next time.
    Another question to ponder, is my sensitivity to sealed subs actually a sensitivity to infrasonic bass? I will be exploring that, so subscribe, hit the notification bell, and stay tuned!
    All in all, I welcome the Monolith 15 to "The List". It's well executed, and my only suggestion would be an infrasonic filter, which should be pretty inexpensive to incorporate into the Monolith 15's design. I want to check out the Monolith 10 at some point too.

    I have the Monolith 15 (got it from Amazon when they made a mistake on the price and sold it for about the same as the Monolith 12). This sub brings a whole new level of awesomeness to music and movies and literally shakes the house. Everything sounds much more "full" and "smooth" for lack of better words.
    Oh, and it should come with a "Use At Your Own Risk" warning! :D

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's quite a score!! Yeah, it definitely shakes the house, and a lot of relative subsonics. Deep bass subwoofers make EVERYTHING sound better. If you're running a single, grab another. Then you'll realize the true power and what this sub is capable of.

    I have a Sunfire True Subwoofer and that thing is tiny. But every time I fire it up I’m taken aback at how LOW that thing sounds, and the punch it has.
    That being said, I’m getting two of these monolith subs for my theater build.

    Thanks for the awesome videos! In your opinion, if you had to choose between 2 Monolith 15 vs 2 SVS PB 16 Ultras based on home theater performance for movies, which would you go with? I’m interested in both but what I really care about is that nice deep bass that you can hear and feel and was wondering if one produced that better than the other or were they equal in terms of performance. Thanks again!!!

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Full disclosure, I'm an affiliate for both, so following my links can earn a commission. So financially, it's more advantageous to recommend the more expensive sub.
      Additionally, SVS has been very supportive, in lending their products and providing expertise when I get stuck on something.
      I can't get an email back from Monoprice, which is frustrating because I genuinely like their products and would like to do more reviews. It doesn't affect my opinion, but it's a fair disclosure.
      I'm also not sponsored by SVS, so they don't direct my opinion, nor do they have any influence on my content or opinions.
      All of that said, the PB-16 Ultras have the most explosiveness. They just kick harder at the same volume.
      It's hard to explain, but the difference in power, and how they put that power down is noticable to me. 50% more RMS wattage. 1,000 vs 1,500 watts RMS. The super stiff cone and MASSIVE voice coil hit me harder with the PB-16 Ultras.
      The Monolith 15 and the PB-4000 are very close in terms of explosiveness, with a very slight edge to the PB-4000.
      I went from the PB-16 Ultras to the PB-4000's, and the difference was noticeable, and since the PB-4000 and Monolith 15 are so close, I don't think it's a stretch to say that the PB-16 Ultras are the most explosive. Just hits deeper in the chest at the same volume.
      The Monolith has a definite edge in price, and also easier to move around, but the PB-16 Ultras are just outstanding overall, and the price reflects that. The ability to change the response curve with the SVS App is very useful, it's definitely more premium.
      Either sub will knock your socks off. For both subs, I wouldn't plug any ports. Let those babies breathe.
      Also, with either sub, you'll be to run a higher gain than most subs. You can see my Top 16 AVR Settings video for an explanation on that.
      All of my Bass Hack videos will help you get the most out of whichever you decide to go with.
      Let me know if that helps!

      Thanks!
      Slight noise during the opening scene of Edge of Tomorrow, but only in Extended, not the THX EQ.
      I don't judge subs too harshly for a little noise from that particular scene. It's just a pure torture scene. I would imagine that with one port plugged, it would be worse, but I didn't try it. Aside from that one scene, no problems.
      The PB-16 Ultras have more port noise from that scene in Extended mode, but no noise at all in Standard Mode with all ports open. Still the best bass I've ever heard, and Standard Mode in the PB-16 Ultra sounds deeper anyway.
      No noise from the 3000 or 4000.
      Always appreciate you stopping by!!

    I just purchased the SVS PB1000 because the monolith was unavailable and I'm not really happy with the output of the pb1000 do you think the monolith 10in well be louder? Seeing how they go for the same price im debating returning the SVS.
    Ps I watch all your videos keep up the good work..

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've been pretty thrilled with the output, I'd imagine it's a relatively issue.
      Try more gain on the subwoofer.
      Something you would need to do with the Monolith too.
      If you are running duals, set it to between -10 to -13 on the PB-1000, and lower the subwoofer level on the AVR to -11.5 or so.
      If you are running a single, set it to -6 to -10, and then order another one as soon as it's feasible.
      See my countless videos on why. 😂
      Set your crossovers on all of your speakers to at least 80-90, 120-150 hertz for small surrounds. Set them all to "Small".
      Then watch all of my Bass Hack videos.
      Gain hack, Adjusting subs by ear, Crossover Hack, Distance Hack, and pretty much everything else.
      It will make a difference, with changes you won't find in your manuals.
      The PB-1000 has plenty of output for 99% of people.
      Duals are recommended for ANY subwoofer, and unless you are making it clip or make unhealthy sounds, there's still more in the tank.
      This is a very common issues for deep bass subs, and you will encounter this issue with any sub I recommend. It's an easy, and VERY satisfying fix.
      You can run more gain before it sounds overdone.
      Let me know!

    Q. Possibly the reason for the review of the Outlaw subs was for your dilike of down fire subs. From your very first few videos you made mention of that multiple times. Now I agree that the SVS and the Monoprice subs are great. I too search for deep. Probably the reason I have held on to my FSR 15 velodyne for so long. Just currious.

    Great review!
    New speakers do have a break-in period.
    As you condition the cone (with some good bass) and the moisture in the cabinet materials slowly evaporates, the resonant frequency of each changes slightly.
    Do you think this might explain your test results after a short time with these speakers?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, it just doesn't make sense based on the typical trend, which is to sort of loosen up the surrounds and spiders, allowing the same power to produce a touch more sound with the same gain.
      I think something else happened, I just have no idea what. Seems electronic rather than physical, but I could be wrong. LFC is the most plausible so far, but still a weak guess.
      In contrast, over the course of 3-5 months, I had to reduce the PB 16 Ultras by 4 dB, which is quite a bit. Normally it's .5- 2.0 dB. They got considerably louder, over a longer period than usual.

    Thank you for your in-depth reviews. I find them very helpful... Are you planning to review MK Sound's X-12 dual cone / push-pull configured subs by any chance? I am owner of an original M&K MX-145 from the early 90's (before they shut the company down and sold it to the Danish). Planning to move to a new house in the next year or so and I started to upgrade my whole AV system in preparation for a higher end setup. I am planning to get a pair of new subs and was wondering how the MK Sound's X-12s compare to the SVS PB-16s or PB-3000s. (MK sound claims the dual 12" cones in their subs are equivalent to a single 18"... which makes sense given the increased surface). I truly hope you cover this brand which was the pioneer of the sub/satellite game...

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither would be my first choice, but between the two, the SB-2000. I would also prioritize duals. It might not seem that important, but the difference is transformative.
      The two subs I would consider are the PB-1000 and PB-2000 as duals. Once you have those, check out my Bass Hack video series to get the most out of them. It will fill in music and movies.
      If you wanted sealed, I would start with dual SB-3000's, since it has more power and the ability to shape the response.
      As for AVR's, I like the Denon and Marantz products. The Denon x4500 is a great place to start. Great room correction, good bass balance once optimized (Bass Hacks), plenty of channels, and you can add external amps later.
      Check out my subwoofer list for more details on why I have these opinions. The link is in the description of this video. Let me know if that helps!

    Thanks for the honesty. However, I wish you had brought up the fact you don't like Infrasonic base before 6:45 so I could have stopped watching sooner. A subwoofer reviewer that doesn't like low notes. I have now seen it all.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Too much relative infrasonic bass will cause discomfort. It's even been weaponized. It can cause nausea, ringing ears, hearing loss, and a whole range of issues.
      Also note that I absolutely enjoy the low notes, built a whole channel about it. But my priority is in the audible bass.
      I'm talking about too much "RELATIVE" infrasonic bass. Relative is the important qualifier. More infrasonic bass than audible bass is problematic. You can't hear it, but it can still potentially damage your hearing.
      I think if you heard and felt what I did, you would likely agree, but it's the internet, so I expect contrarianism.
      Infrasonic bass is fine, so long as there is a decent taper below 20 hertz or so. When you don't have that taper, it can be uncomfortable, getting worse the higher the volume goes.

      @@Subwoofer101 True, everyone is different. I prefer a house curve that just goes up the lower you go. Basically the opposite of the graphs you prefer. I messed around with the PB-2000's and the Mini DSP 2x4, and created the exact curve you described, and I just didn't care for it. The audible sound was identical, just made me feel uneasy. I'm after pure enjoyment, not punishment.

      @santiagoezquerrocordon1470 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can mix them. But you'll need the help of minidsp.
      For sure 12nsd+monolity 15 will be better than 2x12nsd

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I missed this. I did the exact same thing with a single PB 16 Ultra and dual PB-2000's.
      I honestly turned the PB 16 Ultra off, until I paired it with a HSU VTF 15, but it still wasn't great. (PB-2000's removed)
      A few months after getting the first PB 16 Ultra, the second one finally came. That was the "ooohhhh, now I get it!!!" Moment.
      So with mixing subwoofers, the further apart they are, the worse it is.
      Identical subs are ideal. 2, 3, 4, 8, doesn't matter. I would keep them identical.
      I would also go with 2 more powerful subs over 4 less powerful subs.
      Getting 4 of the same subwoofers might be a little smoother, but it won't increase impact like a more powerful subwoofer will.
      Of course, just because one brand has higher output, or more wattage, doesn't mean it'll be more explosive. You can see my video on loud versus explosive.
      The worst mix I've experienced is a 15 inch deep bass subwoofer with a typical 10 inch subwoofer. It was a hot mess. Probably a little better than a single subwoofer, but not much.
      Lastly, the weakest subwoofer tends to drag the better subwoofer down.
      So if you have an okay subwoofer, and an amazing subwoofer paired together, the sound is going to be closer to the lesser subwoofer. It's a strange phenomenon.
      For sure, I would always keep subwoofers identical.
      You are going for constructive interference. The more identical the sound waves, the better the constructive interference will be.

      Ok, this is a "hands off" and a "bench racing" review, but here you go:
      With a factory rated response of 28 hertz, it's just too shallow for serious consideration. There are subs factory rated for 14 hertz that I can't take seriously. A factory rating above 21 hertz is a non-starter because most subs start getting quieter before the rated response.
      Lots of subs factory rated under 20 hertz start getting quieter around 30-40 hertz, which is unacceptable to me.
      28 hertz from the factory will almost certainly be shallow sounding. Nearly impossible that it would have a response curve that I could get excited about.
      With a wattage of 80 watts, high current or otherwise, there's just not enough power, especially considering the price.
      With a cost of $8,500 USD, it has broken my "no friggin way" meter.
      It has an interesting look, no denying that. It appears to be more art than audio. Just not something I would ever be able to recommend.
      I really don't like to be so abrupt about equipment. I'm sure they put a lot of effort into it, and I hate to be dismissive. Just doesn't align at all with the things that I find important.
      I really hope you don't have one sitting in your living room. I feel bad enough already...
      The subs on my list, even the lowest priced $500 subs, would dominate in terms of depth and realism. Certainly, much better bang for the buck.

      The Monolith 15 goes down to 10 Hz at an impressive dB and will trounce the PB-3000 in terms of sheer performance, if house-breaking bass is your goal. But if you're not overly concerned with subsonic performance (say under 17 Hz) and care more about the footprint or the ability to tweak settings with a phone app, then the PB-3000 might be the one for you.
