I am new to driving and found this to be the best tutorial I've seen yet. Beautifully done. Thank you.

What a lovely video! Loved Part 3 showing the handling of the reins (Achenbach method?). Gorgeous pony and turnout!

Great Video, can anyone tell me how much a horse can pull with the type of harness that this horse is wearing? I have a retired standardbred and I want to be able to drive her on a small wagon. Is a harness like this heavy enough?

No, traditional English driving. It's often referred to as Coachman style nowadays. Achenbach is a derivative of the traditional English style of driving. He studied under Edwin Howlett, the foremost teacher of the English style of his day.

The place was Sweden. The big publicity campaign included the song, "Keep to the right, Svensson." th-cam.com/video/JxzChvvTmrc/w-d-xo.html

They have done it in other countries. It's not impossible at all.

Stubborn. It is kind of difficult to change the way one drives on the road after thousands of roads, highways, bridges etc are in place. Compared to changing to Metric measurements, its pratically impossible.

Thg Gghg There is nothing wrong with the proper use of a whip while driving a horse. This misconception comes from a misunderstanding of the purpose of the whip. The whip is not to hit the horse...it is to aid in communication. When you are riding you have your legs to cue the horse. When driving, you only have your reins, voice and whip. I use mine very little, but a gentle tap on the rump can be a nice reminder to my boy if he is being lazy and not being responsive to my voice. Too many people; thinking whips are cruel, think it is ‘kinder’ to slap them in the rump with lines (reins). This is a very bad habit and it can not only hurt the pony’s mouth, it can also confuse them due to conflicting signals. My main use of the whip is when I want to make a tight turn. Rather than only using rein signals, if I want a tight turn, I tap his side lightly with the whip. If I want a really tight turn, I have a special voice command that I add in as well. (All of the aids should work in harmony) It can also be a lifesaver if you are sharing a road with cars. Any aid can be abusive if misused, even an important one such as a driving whip, but blaming the aid itself and choosing not to use it can be even worse.

@@elihop9419 I once needed to whip the windscreen of an automobile when the driver was not paying attention and was inadvertently running my horses off the road. Occasionally it is necessary to whip dogs that are attacking one's horse.

@ebonymare Well they do. The rest of Europe drives on the right side, the English are just very stubborn.
