    From what I hear the JZ was designed to compete with and improve on the existing (and already strong/tunable) Nissan RB engine, being made with a thicker block, better oiling system, forged internals, harmonic balancing, cooling (especially cylinder #6) and a redesigned head. RB30s don’t take much to make good power but it’s handicapped by its rpm without bracing, and non-N1 26s have been known to fail at high power without the oil pump drive being addressed, or the overheating of the 6th cylinder.
    The V16x transmission used in manual A80 turbo Supras is actually the same design as the R34 GTR 6 speed manual, both being supplied by Getrag.
    I own an RB25DET NEO powered car and am a self confessed Nissan diehard, but I have a huge respect for what the 1 and 2JZ can do. I do love the sound of a well tuned, high revving I6

    I used to be an import kid but grew up to be a V8 guy and I've got some questions. When I was a teenager this thing was a huge deal and I was totally in love, but later I met some engineers, read some books, did some math, and now race karts when I want to turn either direction and drag race when I want to accelerate.
    I want to know more about the 2JZ block and head castings.
    Does anyone know about how thick the cylinder walls, main web area, and deck are in a typical factory example? What material is it cast from? Like my 400 Chevy is plain old iron, but I can buy blocks that are grey iron, compacted graphite iron, and 356T6 aluminum and each material has it’s strengths and weaknesses. Does anyone know the stock deck height, like how tall the cylinder jugs are? I see it has a deep skirt block, but the mains aren't cross-bolted, and the crank case doesn't look wide enough to use four vertical studs for the caps. Are the stock caps iron or steel? What about the crank?
    Can anyone that’s actually had one of these blocks measured by a machine shop comment on the factory machining quality? I would guess that the strength in the crank comes from having a main journal between each rod journal with no journal long enough to support two rods, but I'm surprised by the lack of serious main cap support like a steel girdle and cross bolted mains. 700, 800, and a 1000hp is a lot of power, and a typical 6.7L Outlaw Sprint small block will do this N/A but those blocks and heads aren’t made from stock materials or dimensions. How well does all that heat transfer from the cylinders and chamber into the cooling system? It's gotta be pretty efficient or it would kill the heat treatment of the block and warp stuff. Also, it's gotta have a crazy thick deck to handle that much power with four head studs per cylinder.
    What about the head?
    I can't find reliable head flow numbers and I'd really like to see a port velocity profile showing cam lift to charge speed. Valve angle? Chamber size? Stock piston crown to head deck quench distance? Rod length? Ain't no doubt these things are BA, I'm just curious as to exactly why and can’t find a good source of real world info.
    In addition, I'm really curious about the whole I6 balance thing. So my machinist balances my rotating assembly or I buy a set up that's already balanced, and my engine is solid mounted to my chassis via a huge aluminum plate, yet it spins super smooth. If you figure a four stroke engine takes 720 degrees to fully fire and exhaust all cylinders and divide by the total number of cylinders, you get an even fire when the I6 crank has 120* throws just like when a V8 crank has 90* throws. The weird vibraty one happens when they put a flat plane crank in, so I'm wondering how this is any smoother than any other even-fire engine.

      @MARZOSIRUS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Janet Storkmuncher Did you not listen to the video?
      Its a cast iron block inline 6. Came stock with forged Crank and connecting rods.
      You wont find many stock Gm or Ford motors with forged internals right out of the box. Sure there are far more Ford n GM motors n parts in scrap yards. But like I said every 2JZ has forged internals.

    • @MARZOSIRUS
      @MARZOSIRUS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just think how much it costs to buy all forged rotating assembly. Crank, Rods and Pistons.

    • @jameswade2002
      @jameswade2002 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Who cares about internals? Did you read my questions and can you answer any of them?
      Why is a "cast iron block inline six" so special? Just because it's stronger than a 60 year old van engine? Yeah GM and Ford have so much displacement, but who cares when their V8s are smaller on the outside *and* lighter than a 2JZ? Why's everyone so obsessed with VE anyway? Everything out there is stuck at 30% thermal efficiency so it's always a race to the bottom.
      According to ASTM standards a block cast from A357 T6 aluminum alloy should have a tensile strength greater than *45,000psi* and a density of 0.0965 lb/in³
      www.matweb.com/search/datasheet.aspx?matguid=b977e6cf90c24e7dbf0bc4ccac056253&ckck=1
      According to ASTM standards a block cast from G3000 iron (This would be some high end stuff!) would have a tensile strength greater than *30,000psi* and a density of 0.258 lb/in³
      www.matweb.com/search/DataSheet.aspx?MatGUID=d4ad07e580704c4fbf0313e3cf96f674
      *357T6 aluminum is stronger and lighter and dissipates heat faster, so why does being iron help the 2JZ?*
      *And why does it being an I6 help?* I guess being super long makes more power? Maybe each rod having it's own crank main bearing is helpful, but how do we know that they didn't get their raw steel forgings from China, just like everyone else? Does anyone know what alloy the factory internals are forged from? *Magic pixie dust for sure.*
      I hear it's "so well balanced", but no one can explain why. Math and the universe say it's no better than a 90* V8 with a crossplane crank because 720/8 = 90 just like 720/6 = 120. They can both easily be balanced but no 2JZ fan can tell me to what gram(s) their factory rotating assembly is balanced to.
      *What if it's just a big heavy turd that's been dressed up with DOHCs, 24 valves, and giant turbos so silly 90's magazines can sell.* It's not like Japan ever let the NASCAR guys into JGTC, and you don't see this stuff in FD anymore... wonder why?
      And who cares about stock cast internals? My 406 Chevy has forged internals, 270cfm heads, and a .580" lift cam. I can't go bigger on cam or tighter than about 11:1 compression because it'll make enough power naturally aspirated to pound the forged crank right out the bottom of my stock 45 year old block. I'm asking about the block and head and why everyone thinks this engine is so great. So far I'm not convinced *BECAUSE NO ONE ACTUALLY KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT IT.*
      There is so much praise out there, and yet I don't see any hard info or analysis anywhere.

      Almost all 1960s muscle car had forged internals, high nickel iron blocks with thick decks that are more closed off then the 2jz, some even had nodular iron cranks and main caps. Sure the rods are forged on a 2jz but they're still pencil thin and combined with the fact it has two less rods and pistons to distribute load through so most of the outrageous power claims are just dyno queens and if you pulled the head you'd see stress cracks around the decks bolt holes. Also they heat soak after one or two 1/4 passes even at 700hp so there not realistically able to make big power for anything but drag racing just like a chevy 383 can rev to 9,500rpm but only for a 1/4 mile. If you tried to SCCA endurance race a 2JZ it would blow up at anything over 600hp and thats assuming it had all the best supporting mods to keep it cool and that not impressive because a 2JZ-gte weighs 600lbs which is heavier then a old corvette all iron small block chevy 327 at 535lbs or a newer LS at 425lbs both of which can reliability make 600hp in race trim and go full tilt for a 24h SCCA endurance race.

    The cast aluminum pistons have slightly dished top heads which gathers a lower compression ratio. From performance standpoint it’s a disadvantage but a benefit of low compression from the factory means that it makes it easier to safely run more turbo boost.

    You said balance of the rotating assembly but the reason for that is not only because it's a inline. Another huge reason is your bore to stroke is almost identical.

    • @petarazhanix3351
      @petarazhanix3351 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is identical. 86mm bore and 86mm stroke. Now RBs or at least RB26 has a 86mm bore to a 73mm stroke which give it a smaller displacement but also a slightly higher redline

    The Ford Australian built I6 is the replacement for this old 2j. The problem for many is it’s the engine you will never have.... They are getting shoved into supras, skylines, old school everything and pushing 550kw to the wheels with just heavy valve springs and fuel system. Ford had turbocharged their I6 back in 1985, it was twin turbo and all wheel drive.

    Some south African guys when into the 5s with an m88 based motor recently. That's an 80s bmw engine! And I know a lot of bloke making 500-600 bhp with m30b35 motors. Don't doubt the jz series engines of course. I just think that cast iron straight sixes don't all have to be them. Since there are others that do pretty damn well. Especially cost wise.

    Offset pistons for better timing gravity correlating in dive time throttle gear drop. Cheeky injections for each piston; add pressure regulators with chip adapter in lines in fuel tank and transmission; engine choke protocol. Third injections with pressure regulator in lines before the intake manifold in turbo entry. Midway down exhaust manifolds a pressure regulator with turbo exhaust regulator sensor and chip regulator, in catalytic pipe regulator choke systems adapter downshift breaking protocol in the exhaust; Retraction/Expansion Exhaust Regulator system for interval engine breaking or acceleration. For better pipe respiratory air flow. NO3 release valves with regulator chip adapters on all intake lines in engine. Double tank lines leading to four pressurized tanks in trunk. Program systems with modes to computer adaptable programs. A4-Wheel drive traction. Rear light break drums wide wheel space in back and 1/2 of disk breaks in front... adapter regulators chips for breaking regulation system pressure safety in timing and usage.

    This is correct . If you have a bullet proof block with forged crack and double the number of main bearings and all forged internals there is nothing to go wrong. So you can simply pump up the boost swap injectors and fuel pump and you are ready to fly.

    Got a question. Say I bought a Lexus, A 2001-2005 GS430 to be exact, for a cheap daily driver. Could I buy a 2JZ and drop it in there? I hear people only buy the v6 variant if they plan on doing the swap.
    Right now I don't make much, just graduated college. My next car will most likely be a Lexus GS430. Reliable, Luxury, and standard V8. However, i figure a swap could happen in the future.
    If not, is there anything you can do to the GS 430 to make it faster?

    The 2JZ-GE is just as good if not better than the GTE in standard form since the head flows far better.
    Apart from the pistons, headgasket and oil squirters the long block shares the same crank and rods.
    Massive misconception on strength between the two. The 2JZ in all variants are strong and reliable.
    Stock RB's on the otherhand...

  • @CarsnStuff
    @CarsnStuff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    first off lets not make the 2jz-ge seem inferior based off the intro. they share identical blocks and cranks aside from the oil squirters. And for high HP supra's some of them actually delete the oil squirters because they want that additional oil pressure circulating through out other parts of the block.
    Since they share the same crank it really just comes down to the design of the pistons between the two ( GE being higher compression ).
    The thing is the 2JZ-GE is actually a great value. you can buy them for pretty cheap and put some pistons and rods in them have some good machine work done and you'll of spent about the same amount of money as a stock used GTE. Obviously if its a big deal that you have the oil squirters i guess that can factor in. but the GE's will take a beating and keep going.

    • @TunerTestDrive
      @TunerTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. If your plan is to have the block built, a GE block is fine. I'd swap out the GE head for a GTE just for the wider variety of cam, manifold, turbo kit selections though.
