    I showed this vid to my teenage daughter and she said, "I don't have any idea what he's talking about, but I want to watch the whole thing!" When it was over, we said this video makes everyone feel like they could do what you did... even if they don't know what a welder looks like.
    You have a gift.

    I don't understand why so many guys, spend thousands on fancy wheels and tires, shocks, etc., But don't have a truss on their axel. Your explanations are top notch. Personally, that truss is one the nicest I've seen.

      I like your welding. Can u describe your welding motion? Is it
      zig-zag, or "circles"? I have a Lincoln 140 110v welder flux-core from Home Depot. The
      ad states:
      3/16" single pass
      5/16" multi-pass
      So, ur saying it's inadequate for this 1/4" bracket & 1/4" axle tube? But, you are using a 110v welder with Ar/CO2 gas?

    Finally! when i did this there was no info on this product at all. not even any pictures. I had to notch my truss to clear the trackbar drop bracket + send the axle rearward as far as possible. ALSO I had to cut and remove that section of the truss that straddles the pinion. This little cross piece was totally in the way of the upper control arm ( I am running a duel y-link). Oh and I know the directions and in the video it is explained to mount the truss 3/4 '' forward of the diff cover mounting surface, but just be consciousness of what pinion angle you want really because it will affect where the coil buckets sit and what have you. I set mine a little more rearward. The "sway bar link bracket," works well for limit straps aswell. I threw my swaybars in the trashcan long ago. ALSO I had to notch the C gussets to clear my u-joints just a tad. Be careful aligning those CA brackets too. i ended up having to take an upper control arm to the mill and oval the slot open to fit a bolt through. I then welded a thick washer on top the oval.

    • @tylerbleepinjeep606
      @tylerbleepinjeep606 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Chro-mo joints look cool, but I recommend you just stick with regular old Spicer joints. U-joints are easy to replace on the trail compared to axle shafts and pinion gears. I want my U-joints to be my fuses.

    • @TheAmericanUhate
      @TheAmericanUhate 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tyler Bleepinjeep That's true and a good way of looking at it. I'm all for that as long as the u-joints doesn't mangle my axle shafts when they break. I don't see why everyone is so butthurt about upgrading the D30, with what all you've done to yours already, it's going to be as strong as any D44 if not stronger than most.

  • @D.M.Designs

    Bump this to 23...IRO truss fits perfect and is easy to do. Installing HP 30 in my TJ since I already had chromo-shafts and Detroit but blew r&p in low-pinion 30...should be good with 35's. Thanks for vid. Very helpful.

    • @Thunder_Mass1756
      @Thunder_Mass1756 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm thinking about getting this for my HP30 on my LJ. From the site, it says: Coil Spring Mounts: Moved up 1" and back 1/2" for better coil spring retention and alignment throughout the suspension cycle.
      Does this mean my 4" coils will effectively be 5"?

    • @D.M.Designs
      @D.M.Designs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Thunder_Mass1756 my Jeep sits about an inch higher in front now. I am debating on lower coils in front or a small coil spacer in rear. When grinding housing down I suggest leave a little meat where the lower control arm mounts were so you can center them easier.

    I have watched this video no less than 50 times over the past 4 years. I am in the market for a truss, and I am between the Barnes and IRO trusses. I look at this IRO trust and think, there has to be clearance issues at some point at full articulation. I have a basic 4" lift with sway bar disconnects, so I get a good amount of flex. Curious if anyone has any feedback on this.

    Awesome welds, I love the attention to detail. I'd never put chrome molly shafts in a 30. You'll destroy the ring gear. Run stock shafts & let them be the fuse in the front axle. Stock shafts are cheap in the junk yard.

    • @tylerbleepinjeep606
      @tylerbleepinjeep606 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, I don't plan to put chrome molly shafts or any kind of alloy U-joints either. I would much rather replace axles than gears. I'll be installing IRO's "almost alloy" kit on this axle and hopefully, that will get me good reliability with a built-in fail safe

  • @loganshotrod4x464
    @loganshotrod4x464 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The work you did on this axle is beautiful, but I still have questions & concerns:
    Welding to the "c's" & tubes is cool, but how much confidence do you really have in the chunk after all the heat treating it's been subjected to? How much confidence do you have in the weeds that secure the truss to the chunk? Sure, the welds might be top notch, but I'd be afraid of the the chunk cracking on me. I'd also be afraid of warpage. This was a considerable investment of time, money & effort; as such I would've put it into a full float dana 60. Yeah, they're expensive & hard to find, but the alternative seems like throwing good money on top of bad, expensive & prone to failure.

    What setup are you using for cast? Standard 75/25 gas with solid MIG wire? Settings for thickness of steel you're welding to the cast? I'm using the Hobart 140.

      I'm using standard CO2 argon mix gas with solid wire. I have the Miller turned up as high as it will go. This particular machine has a cool feature where you just designate what wire thickness you're using (0.24 or 0.35) and it automatically adjusts the wire speed according to how hot you turn it up. It's REALLY convenient. I'm running 0.24 wire btw.

    Would this work on a dana 44 full width out of a ford?

    Questions. I have 91 XJ with the vac line axle. However I have a 94 straight axle like this one to go in. My question is what do I do with the vac line that I won't need anymore?

      remove them, and or cap them off.

    will that truss work on a wj dana 30 axle

  • @boardbysled

    So, did you measure straightness after welding the truss on? Longside looks bent.

      @tylerbleepinjeep606 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's still straight. Hard to tell from the vid, I know.

    I've never seen anyone weld the tubes on a Dana 30. I'm trussing mine soon, is spinning tubes on them that much of an issue?
    Thanks

      Francesco Antinoro no small diameter size of the ring gear is the problem. You can bulletproof the dana 30 all you want, the small diameter of the ring gear is the weak point. If you have a locker, kiss your gears goodbye👋🏻

    If the front tubes need to be welded to the bell housing they if you want to rotate the front axle for a 5.5 lift, why cut the "C" brackets? Why not just rotate the tubes?

    What is the biggest wheel you could run with a D30? 35", 37" 40". I've heard that the diff center is the weakest part.

    • @tylerbleepinjeep606
      @tylerbleepinjeep606 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The diff will become the weakest link if you upgrade everything else first. There is certainly a point where the Dana 30 just cannot handle what an outfit demands of it. That always depends on your driving style, the horsepower of your motor, the size of your tires, etc. etc. etc. But a good rule of thumb is don't go bigger than 37's with a Dana 30 no matter how many mods you throw at it. You'll just start breaking diff gears.

    Are you completely sure that the "C" gussets go like that? I thought they were supposed to be welded together and go inside the C's...

    awesome vid Tyler. like always. but I had a newb question, so sorry in advance. I saw a couple comments on here already, but I know very little about welding and I would love to learn the trade. are you using a 110v or 220v. and does 220v really make a much stronger weld? cleaner weld? more penetration? what are the biggest advantages?

    • @DestinationUnknown4x4
      @DestinationUnknown4x4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can see he is using a miller 140 in the video which is a 110v welder. You don't need a 220v welder but the more volts the better

    • @tylerbleepinjeep606
      @tylerbleepinjeep606 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Start with a Miller 140 (110v) with a bottle of gas (not flux-core) and you'll be able to weld almost anything you need to as a hobbyist. I very rarely need to bump up to my big Hobart. I get 99% of my welding done with the little Miller. It's an AWESOME machine.
