    I have both a common and an alligator snapping turtle. They did share a tank with some tire track eels, rope fish, gar, and Aropama’s. They stayed together until about they were both 2 years old. The common snapping turtle grows much much faster than the alligator snapping turtle, so my common snapper (Spike) was like 3x the size of the alligator snapper (Saw). Now they are in separate small ponds.

      That’s awesome! Snapping turtles are some of our favorites and you can definitely keep a lot of turtle species together as banques like you did. It’s good to hear you separated them once bigger as eventually something bad would happen. Sounds like they both have a nice set up! Thanks for commenting.

    I sure learned something here. I "thought" we had alligator snappers in middle Tennessee, but I guess they are common snapping turtles. Either way, they are i'll-tempered and will get you. people fishing in ponds catch them sometimes. Great video guys, thanks for sharing !

      Common snappers are no joke. I've caught some 20 plus pounders. They're pussy cats if you leave them be, but snag one on your fishing pole....look out, they will mess you up if you put your hands anywhere near them.

      @@NatureInYourFace That’s exactly what we’ve experienced and I picked one up by the shell once, to move it out of a road. Mistake. It just about got me and I’ve seen what they do to a big stick. Didn’t know they could reach back like you explained here. Yes they can.

    Do snapping turtles have nerves in their shells?
    If you very lightly ran your finger across the shell, would they feel it?

    • @NatureInYourFace
      @NatureInYourFace  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes they have nerves and blood vessels throughout and although not as sensitive as the skin, they can feel it when you touch the shell. They’re pretty incredible animals.

    I have A question please ....can a baby alligator turtle leave together with a baby snapping turtle ? In the same tank? And when both grown up still can leave together or not ?

    • @NatureInYourFace
      @NatureInYourFace  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They might be ok together as babies but they cannot stay together once they start to get hand size. They will kill each other or very badly injure the other. An alligator snapper but the tail of a common snapper at a museum I worked at. So bad idea to keep them together.

      Some people have referred to the common snappers of Florida as “Florida” snapping turtles, Chelydra serpentina osceola but most academia never recognized that and Ibthink now they are just referred to as common snappers or Chelydra serpentina.
