I have been poisoned by the "be famous" virus since 1982. It is indeed a great delusion and so painful... listening to this talk further assures me that taking up meditation, leaving Hollywood and knowing the Dao Te Ching is the healthy direction... your channel is edification, Jason. I am guessing that the lovely girl talking is your wife... thank you both. With love from the UK.

Some self help philosophies falsely teach: become someone of influence to help to make the world a better place. This is still feeding the ego. Be kind to your neighbor now. You don't need to become extraordinary to make an impact. Thank you for helping me on my detox journey. Be blessed everyone 😃

At this stage, you are to the world as the lotus blossom is
to the mud pond. Though it has grown from the mud pond, it
is yet untouched by the mud. In terms of material possessions,
have and have not are no longer so different; they look more
the same to you. You are in the world, but you also transcend
the world. At this stage, your state of mind regarding material
success is that of satisfied dissatisfaction. You will challenge
your limitations for the pure joy of challenge, for continued
expansion is the natural expression of your own divinity. - Thick Face Black Heart Lee Zhong Chang

We must recognize that FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is the norm; as is always pursuing "this year's model". Rather than being like hamsters on a wheel we can choose to step outside of that mindset. When we live simply and humbly and cultivate equanimity...good comes to us. Just be kind and start with yourself. Thanks guys!

Lots of wisdom here Jayson. When I was young, rich, middle income and low income could live in same neighborhood. Now neighborhoods are segregated according to income. New age solutions create as much as there supposed to solve. "Manifest abundance, manifest money". The solutions create as much stress as the problems. The virus changed things temporarily at least. All of a sudden, low income jobs that were looked down upon, became the "essential workers". Thanks Brother.

This reminds me of the way Zen masters (among others) will tell anyone knocking on their doors 🚪 that they don’t have what that person is looking for… that self-improvement thing the persona thinks will satisfy, which is just a bottomless pit that the mind plays as a trick on itself to actually keep itself busy proving that it’s an individual identity.

It's so great to hear you two have an intelligent conversation. So rare in the world. My favorite self help book is Wayne Dyer's book on Laotse. Apparently he read the Daodejing and it changed his life so he wrote a self help commentary on each chapter that ends with the call to action, "Do the Tao now." People find a way to fit things into their own frame. I saw there was a YT channel called "The Outcome Zen".
Thanks for being here and saying this.

Your video gave me great calm. I've been on a path of reversal since over 3 years now. I almost went insane reading the wrong books leading me in a direction where I can achieve anything. Yet I noticed the discrepancy of decreasing happiness and increasing restlessness going down that path. The right books found me and I'm so grateful for finding that path before it's (almost) too late. I don't own much now. I put down my high ambitions and I still do what I love which is music in my case. Yet still trying to find the right balance between doing what gives me joy without falling back into the trap of wanting to be someone special and the feeling of lack that comes with it.

I'm watching this right now and I had to stop and write this, everything you're saying making so much sense to me.
I also see in my life, how I don't really have any "goals", and actually, I even find MORE beauty and charm in the ordinary life, something about it seem more exciting, like a never-ending adventure of spontaneity.
I despise this you-have-to-work-hard mentality which if you don't follow then you're being looked down upon.

Hello Jason! Long time subscriber and viewer here, I just wanted to say thank you for all the deeply moving content. You are such a grounding force in my life. I always turn to eastern spirituality and ancient teachings when I’m taking ‘myself’ too seriously. Being able to absorb the information of people with more life experience embodying these teachings so well is very inspiring. As a young person the world seems to ask so much of me but when I turn back to myself I remember what’s true :) Thanks again my friend.

I love my simple hermit life, alone, however, not lonely and the celebrities in my world, are the people who can save other people's lives, as in Doctors, who perform life saving operations, volunteer doctors who correct eyesight for the poor in their spare time, etc.. Another inspiring podcast, thanks to both of you 🙏🏼 Would greatly appreciate if one day you share about relationships, from a simple living perspective and also about you're own experience as a couple. Most of us westerners are little lost around this topic but I feel total renunciation can also be a trap since it can lead to repressing and denying where I truly am as a human with still some desires and "hopes" around that. Anyway, thanks again for the good work 👍🏼☺️

I love this thoughtful talk. Perhaps I would argue that self-improvement is merely a western attitude toward providing an effective koan.
It pushes you relentlessly until either the world breaks, or you do. Perhaps there is something exceptional under the surface. Something worth the sacrifice of digging it up. Perhaps not. You and the world benefit either way. As long as you don't get stuck in self-improvement purgatory along the way. Of course the spiritual path has many trappings along the way also.
Jim Rohn always said that success has nothing to do with what you get from the pursuit but rather who you become along the way. We're ultimately faced time and again with the reality that no acquisition can or will ever provide what we're looking for. There really seems to be only that one message, regardless of where we look. Neti, neti as I've heard it said.

It is always such a pleasure listening to you guys!🙏 Being ordinary and a "loser" is the best thing in the world! How more we let go or "lose things" how better we feel inside. Too pity how our society still promotes how to become successful, rich and "extraordinary", having more and more material things or to become somehow successful so that we will not be seen as "a loser". How poisoning is that! it makes me really sad to see that there are so many especially young people trying to match up to that "ideal".. :(
There is nothing wrong to do something "extraordinary" if we are truly passionate about it and if it comes from our own intrinsic self. But is also nothing wrong with doing just "ordinary" things and being a kind and com-passionate human being. Sending warm greetings

Eastern philosophy states that the solution is inside, not outside. What's inside is a common experience of the life force. This is equal. What's outside is an ego-based experience that seems divergent, different and confusing. This is unequal. High achievement as a goal accentuates this outside. High achievement as a process accentuates the inside. We need to focus and find solutions inside. We lost the keys inside but look for it under the street lamp. First comment :)

I'm American, and it's taken a few years to convince people not to give me stuff for Christmas. At first I worried that I was being rude, or ungrateful. But after some practice it's become much easier to say, "I don't need anything, no gifts please." It helps to point out that the holiday has become too commercialized for my tastes. As a Dane (who enjoys your content thoroughly) I just want to tell you that Danes are very much obsessed with fame, fortune and workaholism. No different from the states. If anything most Danes strive to live “the American way”.
We do have the welfare system that picks up the “losers of the game” but trust me, being on welfare is extremely frowned upon here and a very undesirably position to be in for most.

Well that is for sure my friend. But the point is the system takes care of the general populace better than other countries. I know this too, as my background is Danish. So welcome my friend.

Jason,I have a doubt and question to ask you regarding Natural state ,Do Aboriginal people who live isolated deep in the forest from cultured, civilized, human being, Without knowing if modern civilized society exist or not,Are they in natural state as they have nothing to own ,no need of self ,What do you think about it, have you heard about it anywhere

    • @JessMaccain

There is a view that these aboriginal people (eg. The native Indian people in the US) are actually more evolved and enlightened human beings than the rest of us in modern society. You can check out the book "Conversations with God - Volume 3" to explore this view.

From experience poverty is a bigger burden than trying for achievement. Maybe the middle ground is the ideal place.

About the raising a kid who doesn’t want to be famous or what not; adding a bit of complication: the kid may enjoy praise for doing something good. The kid may just enjoy the praise which carries to adulthood. Not praising your kid on their accomplishments also is not the answer it seems. Thinking out loud here 🤔

    • @JasonGregoryAuthor
      @JasonGregoryAuthor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It has nothing to do with spiral dynamics. It is pretty self explanatory what it is about and the title of the video explains it.

@@JasonGregoryAuthor but what you are describing is the orange spiral dynamics self help characteristics, but which point of view you are describing from? the green spiral dynamics? or the turquise spiral dynamics? and the lady mention about India, i think the common regular poor Indian are blue stage , but some are wanting to the orange stage

What the hell are you talking about? Don't superimpose your ideology on Eastern thought. That is a beginner stage of spirituality. You have to overcome your perception, it is clouded with biases and conditioning. Also, what do you mean by "poor Indian"? Why are you belittling Indian people? Your type of immaturity is not allowed on my channel. Good bye.

I agree with you but to be honest 99.9% of people are actually living in an extraordinary time and living extraordinary lives.
The real winners are not those who are deemed the "Winners"
The so called "losers " are full of Extraordinary True Winners

I wouldn’t bag on America. To many people it’s the land of opportunity from the countries they have left. And America allows everyone and anyone who immigrates legally to try their luck at a better life.
