    *NOTE* - I'm aware this is a long video, however the first 11 minutes of it is the *WHY* behind the choices made here.
    You can skip to 11:00 if you really want to, but then please don't ask why we're doing this, I put that in the video. :)
    Short version - If you want to clone Windows, you'll need a 2.5" SSD, the M.2 SSD really needs a clean install of Windows, at least in this specific computer due to the way the BIOS handles the drives. Cloning to a M.2 SSD would likely work in a custom built computer on a better motherboard with a full BIOS.

    • @geedouble1402
      @geedouble1402 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Non Bios Edition .you could create a USB recovery disk. install m.2 drive. unplug hard drive power cable. use recovery disk to install factory restore to m.2. once windows is installed reconnect hard drive power cable. reformat hard drive . windows will rename it the d drive automatically .

    • @TechDeals
      @TechDeals  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With this computer, that plan will likely result in Windows not even booting. I did the video the way I did for a reason, it really wants to boot from the hard drive regardless of what you do with the SSD, it took diskpart command line tools via Windows PE recovery to override it.

    • @aashishbaroor785
      @aashishbaroor785 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tech Deals Will clean install on m.2 ssd on Dell i7559 work with the HDD plugged in or should I disconnect it and then do the clean install, connect HDD will it boot with HDD or ssd and then format HDD using disk management? Also while performing the clean install on ssd do I need the product key or Windows will automatically recognise the system?

    • @TechDeals
      @TechDeals  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If Windows is on the HDD, my advice would be to leave it plugged in while doing a clean install, and delete the partitions on the HDD during the install, otherwise Windows gets rather confused having more than one copy on the system. *MAKE SURE YOUR DATA IS BACKED UP*

      Tech Deals Thanks Also my windows is the signature edition, when I do the clean install should I install all the nvidia drivers etc or can I use the backed up files somehow? Also what signature edition features will I lose like Windows defender etc?

    So far, this is the best how-to video for any device I've EVER seen on TH-cam... or anywhere else. Thank-you!
    I'm going to make the machine dual-boot for LInux, so I'll probably "need" a 512gB or so SSD. Should be an adventure, though I have experience doing the same with my current Mac Mini, to which I added a 2nd HDD... THAT was a challenge! At least I have a good set of tiny Phillips - and - Torx drivers due to working on the Mac(s - I have 3, 2 as entertainment PCs).
    I was going to build a PC from scratch, but it look slike i'd save time and money starting with the Acer... one might even come WITH an SSD, so I could buy a HDD just for data and save the cloning/booting/messing-with-Microsoft stuff.
    Thanks again for doing this as thoroughly as you did.

      I represent the antithesis to this statement and I render it invalid.
      4x1TB RAID 0 = 4TB of space that loads games and OS basically as fast as my roomie's 500GB SSD that he's constantly annoyed is low on space. He's also spent much more than I have replacing his SSDs which have failed, while my platter drives have lived on.
      I haven't even filled up half of my lightning fast 4TB array, and it's outlasted TWO of his SSDs.
      Once you go RAID 0, you stop caring about SSDs.

    • @andresquezada121
      @andresquezada121 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rather than an antithesis, a RAID setup feels like the next step up. I wouldn't really expect them in an prebuilt machine, at least not at this price point (hence, my comment).
      I just go with the usual: SSD for OS and programs + mechanical HDD for games, music, videos and other massive files.

    • @zx50
      @zx50 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He must have had bad SSDs then. Good SSDs can outlive a computer. There will be some SSDs out there that will fail quicker than they should do, but the ones that aren't bad will last years and years. I'm not talking about specific brands here, just SSDs that haven't gone bad. Reviews online show that HDDs can also die off suddenly as well. HDDs aren't immune from failing.

    I wish I would have discovered your TH-cam videos before I wasted 4 hours over 2 days trying to get ACER Tech Support to explain how to upgrade the memory. I also escalated my efforts through Amazon's Customer Support NO LUCK. The call center is only authorized to say " we are not authorize to provide any information". They just kept repeating this. I explained to Amazon that I had seen comments on this computer saying it can be upgraded easily to 16 Gb memory so I bought the TC-780 and 8Gb Memory. Totally frustrated with ACERs lack of support. Then I discovered your whole series describing the steps so simply. Thank You!

    This is a terrific video. I upgraded the Aspire T TC865 i5-8400 with a 1TB WD M.2 SATA SSD for under $500 from Newegg. The clean install was a breeze. I didn't even have to install any drivers. My only update to this video is the m.2 location has changed on the current MB. Now the front panel, HDD tray and DVD player must be removed in order to install the M.2 SSD. It's not difficult. By the way, make sure your M.2 SSD comes with that 10 cent metric panhead machine screw (size m2, .4, 3mm). Because unless you have a computer store near you, you may only be able to find size M2 online! Forget Geek Squad/Best Buy. They said they don't inventory parts. Not having that screw is a show-stopper!

    • @thesuburbanelectric
      @thesuburbanelectric 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much for this update! I plan to install an M.2 SSD in the same computer you have. Are there any tricks to getting any of these parts out? I read somewhere that there was a pull-tab or sorts to allow the DVD player to slide out easily? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    What an excellent video. It answered a lot of the questions I had about this computer. I built my previous computer in 2006, I finally replaced it with the Acer is 2018. I have been upgrading some of the families laptops with RAM and SSDs and I am considering upgrading my system. I haven't looked around inside of this one at all yet and the online manual is garbage. This video answered every question I have. Thanks!

    Thanks for this excellent How-To video on how to upgrade an ACER TC-780. I bought this from Amazon with a 8Gb memory stick with the intention of upgrading it. A flyer in the box said Call Acer Tech Support for special Amazon support. 4 hours over 2 days wasted trying to get any help from Acer Tech Support. It is an off-shore call center who keep repeating"Our policy does not permit us to provide you any help" and "if you open the computer, you will void your warranty". In desperation I asked Acer to just provide me a schematic of the inside of the Computer which is normally provided in the User Guide. They refused. I asked for help from Amazon and they tried but again Acer refused to provide any help whatsoever. Very frustrating. This video is much better -Thanks.

    Just a comment, you can restore "deleted" partitions. It's not that hard. But I do get why you mentioned that they are not coming back.
    BTW, you should make more emphasis on doing a clean install. There's nothing like it.
    Some minor stuff like partition alignment and trim are not always cloned correctly, so you have to do that anyway after cloning for better SSD performance and lifespan.
    Good vid. And overall this Acer Desktop series. I'd like a comparison of picking up all the parts vs buying the PC assembled. With upgrades included, if possible.
    Thanks in advanced.

    I did the RAM and SSD upgrade using M.2 and clean install since it was a brand new machine. Worked great. Windows on the SSD is fast and flawless- love it. My issue is the computer doesn't give me the old 2TB HDD as an option like D: drive or something for storage. What can I do to get it recognized and useable for file storage. Love your clear step by step videos. So easy even for an old gal like me :-)

    Also one tip for everyone. No matter how much you think that an SSD will be big enough, get the largest drive you can afford. There is no substitute for lots of storage space. I filled a 240GB drive and am installing a second SSD to double my storage not including an HD that I use strictly to store backup files etc. And now with SSD prices coming down they are a real bargain even for the larger drives.

    I'm beginning to hate this machine. It's not showing a display on a Dell monitor I'm using but does on a Vizio TV. Combine that with a stubborn BIOS that won't recognize any flash drive with a Win7 OS on it for dual boot.

    Hello Tech Deals. Question. This is the first time I saw when you installed Windows 10 that you did not enter in a Product Key or get prompted to enter the Product Key. Is that because the original system came with Win 10 and you had the Ethernet cable hooked up and Microsoft could read the motherboard key??? Or did I miss something. Thanks Mark You channel is the best on out there. Much success to you and your family.

    One of the Drawbacks I found is that Acer gives you POWERDVD 12 but if you do a clean install of windows you have no way to reinstall it...Acer doesn't give you that unless you get the restore USB drive for 45.00 from acer...Small deal but it is a good program for DVD's.

    Did this SSD install on a new ACER Aspire machine, with an i3 processor and a 1TB Toshiba HDD. I Did exactly as demonstrated and prescribed. Installed the proper SSD to the MOBO, downloaded Windows 10 to thumb drive, deleted the 4 partitions, clean install from thumb drive to the SSD and it booted up nicely. Only problem is now, although the Toshiba 1TB shows up in the BIOS, it doesn’t show up any place else, including “this PC” or Disk Manager at all. Any thoughts or remedies?

    Useful video thanks but my Acer T3-710 already has an M.2 128GB SSD 'C' drive + a 1TB HDD 'E' drive. You pointed out the difficulty of cloning from an existing HDD to the M.2 SSD but is it easy to clone from my existing M.2 SSD on to a bigger M.2? Even though I utilise the 'E' drive wherever possible, I periodically have to delete stuff from the 'C' drive to keep the PC working. I therefore I want to install a bigger 'C' drive and I would much prefer not to have to reinstall everything.

      I think the answer is yes. Make sure you register the Windows license to your Microsoft user account. Also first upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, then later do the clean install of Windows 10. That way Microsoft will know that the license was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

    What is the best 120gb ssd for a relatively cheap price? Also what's the difference between the 750 evo and 850 evo? Is it just speed? In addition, the video seems very informative so far, still watching. Nice job.

      I would avoid a 120GB SSD if you can, it isn't large enough to be useful beyond Windows and a handful of things...

      got 2yrs old 120GB SSD and it contains W10 + 2 games and it's full. Look at it that way - GTA V - 65GB, Witcher 3 - 40GB, Doom - 70GB, BF1 - 50GB and so on. You really want to buy biggest SSD you can afford.

    Hello. So I have recently purchased this computer upon my laptop's demise. I was able to pull out my laptop's Toshiba 500GB SSHD Drive out which is still intact and functional. I was wondering if it is possible to install the SSHD drive and have it as my primary drive, while still utilizing the 2TB HDD for massive storage?

    • @ABFSU1
      @ABFSU1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It has connections for an SSD (not SSHD) and the included HDD.

    • @chesshead3943

      Did you try this? If you want the SSD drive, I think this would work fine. If you want to preserve all the data that's already on the SSD drive, then I'm not sure Microsoft will be happy with the operating systems license being moved from the old laptop into this desktop.

      What size and form factor is the solid state drive from your laptop? Is it an M.2 size drive? Or is it a two and a half inch form factor? That will affect how you can install it in this system.

    Would this be the same as a Dell Inspiron 3650 desktop? I would like a clean install of Windows 10 on an SSD. The Inspiron 3650 came with OEM Windows 10 installed on the HDD. However, I'm not entirely sure which SSD is compatible with the Inspiron's motherboard. I always thought we only had one choice (2.5" SSD). I never knew about this M.2 SSD option. How do I figure out what works best for the Inspiron 3650?

      Thanks. With an SSD, from looking at that board, does it appear there's a slot for the power to be plugged in? The desktop came with a 1TB HDD, a DVD drive and a card reader. I've never opened the case of any of my computers before, but with your detailed videos, I don't feel as intimidated as I once did. I'll probably get to it when I have a bit more free time. I have a Acer Aspire TC-230 and a AMD A6 7310 Apu but I decided to put a GeForce GTX 1650 Lowprofile inside the case (barely fit) it works fine but when I try to run a game the GPU will randomly crash locking my keyboard and mouse out with a blank screen (still connected to the graphics card because the monitor is connecting) everything is showing as a white hyphen in the top left middle mocks me. I have to directly remove power from the PSU to restart and turn on my PC again, thing is it only does this on slightly heavy loads such as graphics changes and resolution changes this happens in at least 5-10 minutes of gameplay or when a high amount of particles appear on the screen (lots for the CPU to load) it just crashes. I know I need a Apu upgrade but as far as I know I don't wanna buy a Ryzen 5 2600 and then it not fit any suggestions?

    • @chesshead3943

      I think just the data cables. If you want to preserve all the installed games, then consider buying a really large SSD in a 2.5 inch form factor and you could clone your current hard drive including the operating system and all the games to the new SSD drive. He discusses this more in the video.

      To answer the question here... How would you mount the M.2 SSD in another computer? If you have another machine with a M.2 slot, why are you buying this?
      I suppose you could, but you still have the issue of the partitions on the HDD and the limited BIOS in the Acer machine. I put a lot of thought into this video before making it, I really think that most people should just do a clean install this time, the other options are a mess.
