    Ill put my sense in. I bought my 2012 4.6 from an older original owner. He put it through its paces and bought a newer tundra. Ive put about 20k miles on it since, about 146k currently. Only thing that curses these trucks are the air intake valves needing replacement eventually. Theres is a recall on the older 2nd gens for this but not the later 2nd gens. It can be a pricey fix but not a deal breaker. And the truck bed will rust from underneath by the poorly sealed welds. Just aesthetic for now though. Being as i live in the rust belt this thing is still turning heads at 11 yrs old.

    I average 20 to 22mpg on the freeway and 15 around town with my 2014 Tundra 4x4 TRD offroad with the 4.6L V8. I've had no issues towing or going over mountains and all the power I could ever ask for from a pickup. Empty, it comes off the line and moves onto on ramps like a scalded ape! When I turn off the traction control, it spins the tires and if I manually shift, it chirps 2nd gear. So Yeah! I love my 4.6L tundra. I do use it as a truck, not a dragster.
    It really amazes me that this engine is actually smaller than the 2nd smallest chevy V8 (the 283) coming in at 280ci where the 5.7 is just under the 350ci.

    I like my 4.6; it does everything I need it to do and it moves the truck off the line very well. I needed into a new truck and to run as far away from my Chevy trade as I could. It worked out well.

    I mean, I had a Lexus GS, (sporty sedan), and it had 306 HP, which was zippy and nice, might even push to say kinda fast. The 4.6 Tundra has 310. Uneven comparison, but, if I'm gonna upgrade from Tacoma to Tundra I'm springing for the 5.7. I've actually had the opportunity to drive both. I've even driven a 2013 Toyota Sequoia with the 5.7, and to be honest, it needed it. Now, that being said. In hindsight, I haven't driven them back to back, as a test drive. The 4.6 has pretty much all the power you're going to need. But, like I said, I've driven both, just by virtue of my job, and I prefer the 5.7. No 4x4. I see where you're coming from though. Both are excellent truck. But I prefer a little extra power for passing on the highway, etc. I might have to edit this later when my wallet changes it's mind. 😆 Either way, I'm a big toyota fan, always have been. On a side note, I'm not happy with the 2022 V6 downgrade. Nope. Won't own one of those, ever. 👍

    I think a lot of people have the naysay about the 4.6L because of other brands that had wimpy small V8s. I actually had a chance to drive with both engines (know someone that had a 4.6) and I was impressed with Toyotas small V8 it is really good however, the small engine becomes very noticeable when you connect the trailer and this is where the 5.7 shines and is night and day. If you tow lightly or not at all then the 4.6L is not a bad choice. Another thing is before I got my truck with the 5.7L for my towing needs I actually test drove it in tow haul because unlike with the older 07-13 gen 5.7L trucks they throttle gate the newer 14-present 5.7 trucks now. The tow/haul mode brings that throttle back and your spinning tires etc. and then you once again have that big difference between the 4.6 and 5.7. :D Long story short is if you are not towing like me than the 4.6L is no slouch and is an excellent option for probably most buyers.

    V8’s are a vanishing breed. The great 4.6 Litre V8 is available on the remaining 2019 Tundra’s but it has been dropped from the 2020 line up. Major changes coming as the Tundra is due for a refresh or redesign for 2021 or in the next couple of years. 4.6 V8 is about as Toyota tough as they come! Canada speed limits are 120km at most. How much power do you need? As for me dependability and also economy are important factors and qualities to look for in a truck. Would have a hard time towing and trucking with the poor mileage coming from a 12V 97’ 2500 5 speed 4x4 and then a 07’ CRD Ram 2500 4x4 auto. Maybe propane conversion to run on abit cheaper fuel? Love the Toyota quality and durability.

    I have a 2016 DC 2wd It’s been good. I got it because it was a great deal I lucked out on while searching for used tundras. The biggest complaint I have is that it is constantly searching for gears on the slightest positive grade like over passes while in cruise control the worst is that it will shift to 5th at the beginning of overpass then just as I top the hill it will shift down to 4th then immediately upshift to 6th because I have topped the overpass. Super annoying. Since the V8’s are gone now my next truck will be a used 2021 5.7 V8 dc 4x4 never a turbo for me.

    I bought me a 2013 Toyota Sequoia this year. A 4 wheel drive limited with the 5.7. It's a fun engine, it's a fun truck and it's got what I would call simple luxury. It has everything one would desire and then some, all but fuel efficiency being it's biggest downside. I probably don't utilize the full power of the 5.7 yet as I have not pulled a camper (the main motivation towards buying something like this) I probably could have gotten by with the 4.6 V8 that came in the SR5 models. But I would have lost out on a lot of touches the limited brings to the table and I don't think fuel economy would be much better. My co worker hardly gets 12 in this city with his tundra and I get a little under 11 on a good day. Very small. I agree with the creator of this video. If your worried about gas mileage then this ain't the truck for you. On the other hand it's got plenty of power. It's also beautiful. Ain't cheap though.

    If you have a choice, go with the 5.7. Not that its that much better, but its enough and the gas mileage loss isn't enough to justify going down to the smaller engine. That's really the only justification for going smaller. However, if you find a used or new truck you really like with the smaller engine, get it. It isn't that big a deal and you can use the engine as a negotiating point. Although I'd never get a Chevy again, I'd rank the 4.6 closer in performance to the 5.7 than the comparable 4.8 Chevy to the 5.3. I'd never have gotten the 4.8 Chevy even though, reliability wise, it wasn't a bad engine.

  • @Big_Island_Boi
    @Big_Island_Boi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I've read a lot about how the 5.7 is more sought after and thus has a better resale value than the 4.7/4.6. That might also be that the 5.7 trucks tend to be higher trim level, 4x, etc. But even if the 5.7's sell for 5% or 10% more on average over time with the same mileage, etc... that would significant--especially considering there is no real fuel economy savings with the smaller engine--as there should be. If Toyo could get the 4.6 up to, say 20mpg on the highway--that would be something worth having. But if you're talking about 1 mpg on avg difference... who cares? For me it would come down to the total package--not just the engine--including exterior color, interior trim level, wheels, mileage, overall condition, etc. I would buy a 4.6 if it had everything else I was looking for--and was priced right. But if it were two roughly identical trucks--with each engine--I'd go with the 5.7.

    My first Tundra was a 2014 4.6Liter v-8,I did not like it. Here’s the issue I had with it after several months (5) use and taking it on the road. The 4.6 tended to shift out of 6th gear more often when going up and down hills (east Texas piney woods), which I was not use to coming from a GMC 5.3liter. It was irritating, even my son (27) also noticed this issue. The other issue was the gas mileage, which is why I steered away from the 5.7liter at first wasn’t that great and that 24gallon tank, I had to refill more often. Long story short, I test drop a 2017 5.7liter 6 months later, WHAT A DIFFERENCE, I noticed the power differences on the highway and the axle gearing also made a difference. I ended up trading the 4.6 for a 2017 5.7liter with the 38 gallon gas tank. The 5.7 runs the hills great like a man and also pulls loads great with consistent power across the power-band with little or no downshifts. Trailered with it from Texas to Maryland and drove like a boss. Pulled a car (approx. 3,500lbs) on a car haul trailer from Maryland back to Texas, pulled great with no power issues. And the 38 gallon tank, I could get 400 plus miles on the road per tank. By the way, PREMIUM unleaded makes a difference in gas mileage, I know most may not agree but I’ve tested and tried multiple times and found better results with premium fuel. And the 5.7 got around or better fuel mileage than the 4.6 that I previously owned. The 5.7 is the way to go even if riding around town, much better than the 4.6. This is my proven fact.

As well as 5k # boat, but with that said my next will be the 5.7. With lift and tires at 80 mph the trans drops 6th gear on the highway all the time which it did without the lift. I got the Crewmax Limited 5.7 V8 but with a 2WD. I mainly did that cuz the 2WD has a higher Towing Capacity. Plus I don’t do enough off road to need a 4WD.

      RobMotive I just bought the Cement Gray Crewmax Limited 3 weeks ago. I’ve been watching your videos for a while. I was sad when you got rid of your Crewmax. I really love the TRD Pro in Voodoo Blue ,but wanted the luxury features of the Platinum. It was Color and Stock inventory at my local dealership, that’s why I went with the Limited trim. So I’m in De-Chrome mode. The limited is missing the cool ventilated seats and BSM and RCTA and color keyed Bumpers, Grill and Mirror Caps. So my Sparks Parts wish list is growing. I got the Blacked Out Emblems and Cement Mirror Caps in yesterday.

      Congrats on the new truck👍. Gotta get rid of that chrome. I think black handles and mirror caps will look great with cement. Especially if you go with the color matched bumper caps, grille and hood bulge!! Don’t forget to use discount code RobMotive for 5% off at Sparks👍👍

    I appreciate your video and the comments by those who made them I am looking at a 2019 4.6 SR5 4 x 4 I recently saw part of a video “by I do cars” if you’re not familiar with him, every Saturday he tears down a blown motor, doing the Toyota 4.6 showing that the fabric belt For the Valve train broke. my question is, does the 5.7 have a chain or a fabric belt and do you see this as a problem with the 4.6 it was mentioned that they need to be changed out at 100,000 miles, but I’m not 100 % about any of this.
