Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Deena (Beyonce Knowles), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) catch their big break at a local contest.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Subsequently molded into an unstoppable hit machine by Taylor and propelled into the spotlight as "the Dreams," the girls quickly find their bid for the big time taking priority over personal friendship as Taylor edges out the ultra-talented Effie so that the more beautiful Deena can become the face of the group. While I may not be a Beyonce fan I do think she worked her ass off for this movie and it's so evident just by the amount of energy she put in these back up dancer scenes.
I felt the same way you do as far as not being a big Beyonce fan. I always thought she was a fair actress, but with each acting role she gets better. And in Dreamgirls, she did an excellent job! I guess she felt this role because of the genre, it was a Musical and she's into music but she did a very good acting job and a good job throughout the movie.

The entire 1st verse = Effie's problems with Curtis, how he put her in the background, cheated on her, broke her heart
"Move Right Out Of My Life" = everyone's feelings towards Curtis in the end because he was so controlling
"The way you lead me around" = Curtis controlled everyone here and told all of them that they have to do anything he says
"...Titanic ...Going Down" = Effie's career basically went down like the titanic after he kicked her out the group
"Stepping On My Style" = Curtis basically forced Jimmy to change his style to appeal to white people and the pop charts and took away all his soul
"I wanna breathe for a while" = Curtis was basically down Deena's throat about the music she made and the movie she was in and she wanted to do something on her own (the other movie)
I could be reaching but it does seem kind of weird they'd sing a song about a manipulative controlling guy in the beginning of a movie about one

Very accurate. Flo Ballard was the original lead of the Supremes and had a powerful voice that captivated everyone. Gordy decided Diana had the lighter more commercial 'pop' sound so she was made lead singer.

Gordy made Diane the lead because she had the most Cross over voice. Her voice Cross over to the pop and mass appeal as her voice was neither Black nor White. you could not tell what race she was. Mitchell Steven No, Mary never said that. According to her interview with Unsung, she said Florence sang lead the most and was the lead singer until they signed with Gordy. After that, she sang lead briefly until Gordy made Diana the lead.
+Mitchell Steven the musical tried to distance themselves from the actual story lest they be sued, but the movie actually was more blatant. The movie reset the story in Detroit (in the stage version they were from Chicago) with the Curtis character being a car salesman (just like Gordy) and the Dreams' album covers were carbon copies of the actual Supremes'. Also, the movie has a Jackson 5 type group, which is not in the original musical. In fact, the movie hit so close to home that the real Berry Gordy threatened to sue. Diana Ross was asked about the movie, and all she said was that her friends told her that her image and story were heavily borrowed, then she joked that she would need to talk to her lawyers. Mary Wilson said that the movie is closer to the truth than people know.

I don’t think Beyoncé is a gifted actor in films (she definitely is on the stage performing her music) but I have to say when she plays shy Deena in the first half, she kills it. Probably because her natural disposition is shy. But it’s the most believable role I’ve seen her play in a film.
Prob bc she’s Deena in real life so she didn’t really have to act all that much…. Obsessed and Cadillac records is the most out of box and “roles you wouldn’t think she would play” that she’s ever played.
She really played Deena well even with the Diana Ross’s impression. She’s so legendary as a musician that people think that she’s a bad actress just because she’s not as excellent in acting as she is in music. If Beyoncé wasn’t this superstar that we know y’all would all think that she’s a quite good actress. In Obsessed she was very convincing and in Cadillac Records, even better. Ofc it came less natural at her than singing or dancing but she has some talent as an actress.
