CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After Effie (Jennifer Hudson) is forced to sing backup, the group performs for the first time with Deena (Beyonce Knowles) as lead.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Subsequently molded into an unstoppable hit machine by Taylor and propelled into the spotlight as "the Dreams," the girls quickly find their bid for the big time taking priority over personal friendship as Taylor edges out the ultra-talented Effie so that the more beautiful Deena can become the face of the group. Now, as the crossover act continues to dominate the airwaves, the small-town girls with big-city dreams slowly begin to realize that the true cost of fame may be higher than any of them ever anticipated.

+Ashley R She won a Tony Award (Broadway) in 2004 for Featured Actress in a Musical for CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. Then was nominated 10 years later for Features Actress in a Play for A RAISIN IN THE SUN. If film or TV doesn't pan out, she always has the stage. Also, as the voice of Tiana, she'll always have a job at Disney. Those Disney princesses have long shelf lives. The voices of Ariel and Belle are still working over 20 years later.

Beyonce didn't hold back enough vocally as Deena. I think subconciously she didn't want ppl to think she couldn't sing in real life, so she snuck in a few extra runs, lil vibrato, and held a few notes too long. She looked amazing in this scene though and I still love it.
Totally agree!!! I've always thought the best part of her voice was it's sweet tone. It shines more when she tones it down.

I was thinking the exact same thing. The audience is supposed to believe that Deena has the lesser / MUCH lighter voice. Beyonce oversang so much in this role, that it was a little anti-climactic when she finally sings "Listen". In fact, the grunts and wailing she does in that song just sounded like she was trying to compete with "And I Am Telling You".
Shango Bongo listen to this right here. she's clearly holding back. And I'm thinking if the director and various producers didn't think she was singing too hard, then she probably wasn't. And I wish folks would kill the notion that she was competing with Hudson in any way. She knew what part she was playing. She knew what the part was in relation to the other girls in the movie.
CHEETAH69 First of all, I presume that there is some movie, TV show, play, or performance that you thought sucked, despite the directors and producer's feeling that it was a msterpiece. One thing has no bearing on the other. Secondly, and more importantly, the comment section is for everyone's opinions and perception, not for people to honor your wishes, and "kill" all notions that differ from your own. Be blessed.

Beyoncé sang the shit out of this I love Sheryl lee Ralph but even she has said wasn't much of a vocalist that's why she got the part in the original role, even though Beyoncé was told she had to tone down her voice and almost didn't get the role because of her vibrato and natural resonance, she still managed to give it that Beyoncé effect, runs, riffs, little crescendos, then Jennifer and Anika layering on top. Amazing

Beyonce has so many tones in her voice. I love her soft soulful voice like in this and in that Missy song she did "Nothing out there for me". I like her rough stuff too, but miss her soulful side a lil.

Beyonce was stunning in this movie and she did a fine fine job of acting. One of her best acting roles as of yet. She's getting better with each role she plays in the movie. We are going to be shocked in another 10 years or so if she mess around and win an Oscar for a role😁
