Hey! Here is some good Advice from Hungary. If you want your Mangalica to have an incredible Flavor, make shure that the diet consists at least 50% of either Chestnut or Acorn! Thank me later ;)
50% acorns diet in my area is a super expensive feed not reasonable if trying to make any kind of money lol but I do get my Mangalitsas as much fruit and veggies as we can that are gonna get thrown out by our local grocery stores it's probably 75% of their pasture diets and then when farrowing we give them a special blend for gestation + apples and strawberries when we have them!
We have only fed ours (Mangalitsas) some table scraps (fatty pieces of cooked meat, little bits of cooked meat), and those get eaten, however, we usually will have it mixed in with their feed, skimmed milk, or both. Havent tried feeding them plain raw meat yet, so that should be interesting to try. As far as whether they'll attack/harm humans, we're fairly comfortable with them (the kids and I go into their pasture all the time; I even keep the boar from the trough at times....he's a bit chunky...he ends up laying down so his ears, face, and neck can be scratched), but apply the same philosophy as the other animals - trust somewhat, but stay alert & aware just in case :)
There used to be an old man who when the carp came up in the shallow back water and I've seen him haul out stringers of carp that had to weigh 150 lbs or more he had clubbed and feed them to his hoggs ,they loved them fish . But I have heard that if they ate a steady diet of fish it made the meat tast funny. I remember an other old man would get the table scraps from the school cafeteria and fatten out a bunch of hoggs with that ..
In my experience Mangalista prefer to eat vegetables, greens, oats/wheats, fodder, and the occasional chicken or fish during breeding. But generally they don't like meat.

But they eat it up the moment you give to them whenever I fed them. Never had a health or funny taste in the meat from it. Especially because I finish my pigs on Hazelnuts, sweat potatoes, and Cherries. Gives a nice flavor to the meat after a month of feeding.
Mangalitsa eat any kind of protein sources, even after giving birth placenta and even those piglets which don't make it or become badly hurt by e.g. an attack of crow or raven. Never tried with rest of sunday roast so far, but at a farm where I learned, the usual duroc/pietrain would eat rest of human dishes, as well roast porc
Supposedly Margaritas require half the protein of your average factory york, this probably accounts for the lack of interest in traditional proteins and that's such as Meat and fish.

The 400 lb bore is the vanilla ice cream color, the mom is the rust color, and the babies are all three different morphs. I threw some juvenile wild turkeys in there with them that I had cut up, and a few legs of deer and they tore into all of them . After eating their fill, they left the carcasses with meat on the bones which our Yorks would never do. They would eat everything. This is a herd of mom, dad, and 7 piglets. There is no indication that the genetics are contaminated. I will say though that the piglets were sucking the mom dry and she is awfully skinny compared to what she should be, so that is one factor, but the big fat bore also took his share of meat as did the piglets. He definitely ate some of the turkey entrails as well. So happy Thanksgiving Brother!
With that said, I don't think the person who had them prior to me was offering them sufficient Cal given a nursing mom. I think he was making them survive on hay and skim milk from the local. So they were probably jonesing for the fat and protein from high-quality wild meat. We also put a red-tailed hawk who died on our property in there and they did not touch it. I didn't push the matter because even though my cousins said the red tail was somehow killed by A flock of blackbirds or crows, I'm leery that maybe it got into some sort of poison or ate a poison rodent.

To give credit where credit is due. Mangalita breed was developed in the Salonta area in a time when Transylvania was part of the Austria-Hungary empire.. Salonta is now in Romania but very close to Hungarian border.. Mangalita was very much spread in the entire region, populated by both Romanians and Hungarians, and as borders moved back and forth throughout history, it is meaningless to try to determine the origin. I am native Romanian, but I acknowledge that Mangalita is a Hungarian name and rather than arguing about which nation developed this breed, I am grateful that it was rescued from extinction in 1990s. Transylvania was Hungary when the pig was made. This is Austria-Hungarian breed, before the world wars. Same way as you say, an animal was scottish and not United Kingdom made, if it was created in that part before they got unified.

you should be feeding slop. if you have a good solid breed that won't take meat and forsome reason. NEVER EVER EVER FEED PIGS TO PIGS. ... you could cause a billionare dollar foot and mouth problem in your county. Hell you could cook up something new pulling that kinda stuff. Put everyone outta work and get a bunch of pasture base farmers pigs killed off cooking up something new. We need those breeds and that gentics for the future. Always see if they take slop instead. just put a lot of corn and other things in there. the problem folks don't realize when you break the mother from the child you are breaking the learning cycle. you gotta "teach" them to eat it. one of the biggest things to train is teaching them to eat and teaching them that the fence is hot. once you train it it you gotta keep up the training. hogs aren't dumb.

I have spoken with a couple of different people at the feed store,who have been "AI"his 2 sow with Kune semen and getting hybrid piglets that are more suitable for smaller homestead and as "pasture pets". I have only read good things in regards to kune crossed with any breed of pig. Especially dressed out carcass of kune hybrid.
In my opinion mangalitsa’s are small enough for just about any homestead….. and if the butchering weight is a concern, you can always butcher young……. 5 months is around 100 lb live weight.
We are about to buy two for harvest from a farmer friend who raised them the past two years. We are so excited to have this meat and to have this high quality fat to cook with! 🤍🤍🙌 🐖

Normal hogs will absolutely eat fish……. These Mangalitsa pig don’t seem to want it at all!

It really varies from pig to pig. Generally at 9 months they will weigh around 200 ish at 13 months they can go 300+ and at two years go 400+

It is not true what wikipedia will tell you that Mangalita comes from HUNGARY, IT IS A GREAT LIE this race more precisely comes from TRANSYLVANIA (ROMANIA) AS WELL AS THE BAZNA PIG BREED

To give credit where credit is due. Mangalita breed was developed in the Salonta area in a time when Transylvania was part of the Austria-Hungary empire.. Salonta is now in Romania but very close to Hungarian border.. Mangalita was very much spread in the entire region, populated by both Romanians and Hungarians, and as borders moved back and forth throughout history, it is meaningless to try to determine the origin. I am native Romanian, but I acknowledge that Mangalita is a Hungarian name and rather than arguing about which nation developed this breed, I am grateful that it was rescued from extinction in 1990s. Transylvania was Hungary when the pig was made. This is Austria-Hungarian breed, before the world wars. Same way as you say, an animal was scottish and not United Kingdom made, if it was created in that part before they got unified.

@@McGieHomesteadAdventures there's 11 on 10 acres of apple orchards fed fresh produce sunflower seeds excess goat milk and grain we produce on our farm so I dont believe there lacking anything but there sure did eat the tully's chicken tenders I had left over yesterday and they love any meat scraps

you should be feeding slop. if you have a good solid breed that won't take meat and forsome reason. NEVER EVER EVER FEED PIGS TO PIGS. ... you could cause a billionare dollar foot and mouth problem in your county. Hell you could cook up something new pulling that kinda stuff. Put everyone outta work and get a bunch of pasture base farmers pigs killed off cooking up something new. We need those breeds and that gentics for the future.
Always see if they take slop instead. just put a lot of corn and other things in there. the problem folks don't realize when you break the mother from the child you are breaking the learning cycle. you gotta "teach" them to eat it. one of the biggest things to train is teaching them to eat and teaching them that the fence is hot. once you train it it you gotta keep up the training. hogs aren't dumb.

I have never heard of AI for pigs…….. it’s probably a thing. I have boars that are willing and able to do that job for me.

I have spoken with a couple of different people at the feed store,who have been "AI"his 2 sow with Kune semen and getting hybrid piglets that are more suitable for smaller homestead and as "pasture pets". I have only read good things in regards to kune crossed with any breed of pig. Especially dressed out carcass of kune hybrid.
In my opinion mangalitsa’s are small enough for just about any homestead….. and if the butchering weight is a concern, you can always butcher young……. 5 months is around 100 lb live weight.
