- How to work with ratio - 'standard' exam question. Visit www.3minutemath... for more ratio questions.
This question is around level C at GCSE and is fairly 'standard' - work out the value of 1 part and then use to calculate the value of the ratios.
"Jared is preparing the ingredients for a pizza. He uses cheese, topping and dough in the ratio 2:3:5
He uses 70 grams of dough.
How many grams of topping will Jared use?"
I hope the video helps and please do leave a comment - thanks.

I find maths so hard but you explain it so clear and well! thank you, keep them coming!
my math teacher makes it look so hard but you helped me thank you❤
I know they all do
you are the sole reason i am passing my classes rn
Hi +dante Marriott and +Paul Gentles ... I've used 5 as there are 70g of dough and that is 5 parts of the whole mixture. We're trying to get the value of 1 part (it could be dough, cheese or topping), so I need to divide the 70 by 5. I'll add some more videos on this very soon :-)

That makes more sense thank you!

Thank you Simon! This was brilliant!
Simon thank you so much. Im pretty good at maths and did baseline assessment for year 10. My brain went on a lot of the questions. And one of the bigs ones was a ratio one. Thank you so so much for this help.

you can also just list the ratios as: 3/x and 5/70 then cross-multiply them to find the x
thanks, you make it seem so easy

Really helpful, thank you so much !!

makes sense, I understand, yet the way I did it in a test today was exactly this way yet I still got it wrong :/
must've been a math error.
Because it is wrong

i don't understand how u divide 70g of dough which they are using by one part of three and get 14g then multiply it by the rest of the parts to find the value?
what i was expecting u to do is to add the three part together which would be 10 them divide it by 70 which equals to 7, then multiple each part by 7 to get the value of each part.
Same
thanks it will help me pass my exam said my son
That's great and glad to help - all best S :-)
@@3minutemaths why is the ratio method different to the money ratio, is the formula the same by adding it all up get the 1 part and then multiplying it by the ratio number or does it varies
@@mohammedhussain3627 th-cam.com/video/EUSWAhvETwc/w-d-xo.html
Just don't blow up any buildings.
The answer is wrong
It is wrong it should be 21 grams
that's the million dollar question @paul why use 5???
Hi Simon, I am a little bit confused considering your previous video and this one. How come you had to add the other ratios to get 12 before using the 12 to find the one part? But then in this one, you just divided the 70g by one of the ratios to find one part? Thanks
Hi - it's really all about trying to get the value of 1 share. With this question we're told that the 70g of dough is the same as 5 parts. If I divide 70 by 5 I can then get the value of 1 part. Hope that's OK and all best S
Simon Deacon I’ve had a good look at both the question and the video and I clearly understand now, thanks very much for your prompt response
everything is so much clearer now thanks so much
+Krista Williams - That's great and glad to help :-)
I forgot how to do this. 35g : 75g = 50g : x. I guess it is a different calculation. Is its 75x55 divided by 25?
Thanks Simon, this helped a lot.
I have a question
How can you take the amount of dough and use the answer for that for the rest of the toppings?
ummmmm, if you get the point, just leave it :)
I found it hard at first but now I understand thanks ❤

How would you work out 1:2 sharing 120
Hi - if you were sharing 3 then it would be in the ratio 1:2.
In this case we're sharing 120 ... which is 40 times bigger.
So, multiply through by 40:
40:80
Hope that's OK and all best S
Thank you

would you do the same thing if the ratio was 2:3

Simon Deacon ok thx
Thanks so much .

the test does not work when i go on the link it just says not found :-(

"A gardener sows 14,000 seeds in a greenhouse. The ratio of seeds that will fail to germinate is 1: 24. How many seeds will germinate," how do I solve this? I can't see a way to apply the method used in this video to my question.
Hi - if there were 25 seeds in the greenhouse, 1 will fail and 24 will germinate (if I've read you correctly).
But there are 14,000 seeds .... x560 times bigger
So, rather than 1:24 it'll be 560 : 13440 (each number has been multiplied by 560).
Hope that helps and all best S
Simon Deacon, I eventually figured it out for myself and got the same answer you did, but thank you for taking the time to reply though. I appreciate it.

Hi - can you give an example and I'll try to help? Best S
thank you
But in your last ratio video with the money you added all the ratios together I’m a little confused
Marc1163 Hi - yes, it’s really just trying to find out the value of 1 ‘part’ ... from there you should be able to work out how much each parts have been multiplied by. Best S
Thanks Simon for the feedback didn’t expect a reply so quick

this helped my crippiling depression.
2:3:9 and $560 is shared among them I need to find the difference between the smallest and largest how do I solve this
Hi
If they were sharing $14 then one would get $2, one $3 and one $9
But, they are sharing $516, which is 40x more .... so each person has 40x more:
£80:$120:$360
Total $560

How do you get 70
Hi - it's 70g of dough .... the question is written in the description. Best S
How did you get 14g
Hi - I've divided by 5 as there are 70g of dough. We're trying to get the value of 1 part (it could be dough, cheese or topping), so I need to divide the 70 by 5 to get 14g. Best S
I understand now. Thank you.
I understand
But how to I FIND a ratio? Like I am given 2 numbers and I need to find the ratio. All information I can find starts with a ratio. I need to FIND the ratio!
Hi, can you actually post the question and I’ll try to help? Best S
@@3minutemaths thanks for the response! I am embarrassed because I am sure the answer is very simple. If I have a value of X and a value of Y, as separate measurements, how do you find the ratio X:Y? X=5.13 and Y = 1.16. For example.
@@deendrew36 Hi - yes, that would be correct, you could make any two numbers ratios of each other. It’s a little unusual to do that though unless there is some sort of ‘connection’ - such as height / weight, men / women, or the ratio of money shared in a group of people. Hope that’s OK and all best S
@@3minutemaths so is that the ratio? Is it that simple? If the values are 5.13 and 1.16, is the ratio simply 5:1? (Rounding down for each value). Now I really feel dumb! Thank you! 😄
@@deendrew36 No worries and glad to help :-)

can you help me with a question?
Helen has 80books to sell
Each book is fiction or non fiction
The ratio of the number of fiction books to the number of non-fiction books is 3:1
Each book has a price of £10
Helen reduces the price of all non fiction books by half price
She sells 80 books
WORK out the total amount of money Helen will recive
Thanks!!
Hi - If Helen only had 4 books she would have 3 fiction and 1 non fiction.
Because she has 80 books, it's 20 times more than the 4 .... so, she actually has
3 x 20 fiction and 1 x 20 non fiction
or
60 fiction and 20 non fiction
The books are sold at £600 (60 x 10) fiction
£100 (20 x 5) non fiction
Helen should receive £700.
Hope that helps and all best S :-)
