    There are actually three ways to write it. The first way is the fraction, the second is the colon, and the last is using the word "to". Using the word "to" is like using the colon. An example is
    6 and five written as a fraction, but then if you wanted to use the word "to" you simply put 6 to 5. Hope this helps!!

    This has been eye opening. I wondered if you could help me out on this. I struggled between ratio and fraction. The denominator of fraction means out of or how many parts is divided into , whilst ratio is comparison. Yet they can be written the same way. Why is this and how can I tell the difference when I am looking at denominator of fraction wether is ratio or fraction if they can be written in the same way?

      in the example with 15 cups of milk coffee compared to 20 total cups, it sounded more like a normal fraction, because it was parts of a whole. But most of the other ratios are one part compared to another part. Do we just need to say the context each time to understand?

  • @tanacosgrove3306
    @tanacosgrove3306 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The ratio of 3 boys to 6 girls is not a fraction. It is a part to part ratio - fractions are part to whole! We have to be careful with our language. Another thing is that we are not "simplifying" as much as we are scaling up or down. This language helps build conceptual understanding.

  • @krzysztoflechowski5745
    @krzysztoflechowski5745 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    "Ratio is a comparison of two numbers" is the most brilliant statement I've heard in a long time. It's kind of obvious when you think about it after, but to put it in these words takes a genius. However, I object of saying the 3:6 is the same as 1:2. Following your thought, these are two separate comparisons, they may be algebraically equivalent, but when you reduce the ratio you lose original information. Which might be undesired. Reduction is just another mathematical tool that you ,ay could want to use. Or not.

    • @iandegnin6696
      @iandegnin6696 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the point that's being made is that ratios are -specifically- the comparison between two numbers, not the numbers themselves.
      There are valid reasons to retain the information and you may choose to write your ratio with the original numbers or record the two numbers as well as the ratio, but -as far as a ratio is concerned-, 3:6 IS the same as 1:2; they're mathematically identical.

    • @dhanichandralimbu3837
      @dhanichandralimbu3837 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I support u. 3:6 is never equal to 1:2 but they may be equivalent to each other .

    1 million to 1 billion=10^6/10^9=1/1000 or 1:1000.
    Ratio of 10 feet to 20 inches= 10/20=1/2 or 1:2.
