Brian . im an old bloke trying to play electric guitar for my own enjoyment. Brian i have to say you are an amazing teacher. Scratch that . A bloody articulate accurate teacher. thank you so much for your labor of love i hope you achieve everything great in life.
I'm let's say an intermediate player. I knew the material explained in the video. Still I could not stop watching. Never in my life have I heard the Circle Of 5th explained this well. The learn by doing (practical) approach used in this lesson is really, really awesome. This is what learning videos should be like. One of the best lessons I've ever seen on TH-cam or anywhere else.
The pentatonic test for finding the key is mind blowing. I played along with the song as you did, and it was amazing when I heard the right notes. I not only heard them, but I felt them. This is going to completely change how I approach learning a new song. The tips on finding out-of-key chords are really helpful, too. 🎸🎸🤘🤘
I remember that OG vid! Long time fan. I did notice right away that your camera lighting exposure has improved but I never minded the over exposed burned out look you had because it underscored the valuable no-BS content you put out by emphasizing the effort put into the subject matter over how "slick"it appears. We love how you keep it real. That said, it does look better with the lens stopped down. Cheers!
Brian, that video is like gold-dust. I've spent a fortune in books and videos over the years and have struggled because I've never found a teacher who thinks like I do. You've distilled hundreds of hours of theory and learning by trial and error into 30 minutes. Thank you.
I have learned from your original video how to use the pentatonic to get the key. However to get confirmation if I have the right key, I pick a guitar solo in the song and see if that solo fits exactly with the pentatonic or diatonic scale of that key. Works for me.
Classic tune. Excellent lesson. Discerning timbre (or ‘tone’) from pitch is where I think most beginners fail the pentatonic test. Often choosing songs with too much going on or lots of distortion. This got me thinking- After years of ear training and being put on the spot in co-writing sessions to work out vocal melodies/harmonies on the guitar/piano… It’s hard for me to recall how difficult just finding the key was at first. It’s nice to see you spend a half hour and show that it takes patience.
thank you very much 3 months ago I watch your previous how to learn by ear and now I'm practicing and right away I got the right key just by playing the high e string ,thank you for these exercises 💛
Man, this is so freaking cool. I'm getting better and better at figuring out my favorite songs. Maybe not 100% figure them out but really close. I started out with easy songs to build confidence and it's helping getting the hang of this ear training type of stuff. I appreciate all the videos you put out for us!!
Man I have been playing off and on for myself for 35 years. I have watched tons of these types of videos and never understood one bit of it until this one. Now my mind is blown lol. Thanks!
I wish I had this video 20 years ago. Also, I have a degree in guitar and hadn't ever heard or realized that the circle of fifths tells you the chords of the key so neatly.
I saw the original video and was shocked by how easy it really is to learn a song. When you think about chord tone targeting, you can get there a little faster. What helped me the most was really focusing on recognizing intervals. Once I did all that, I weaned myself off of tabs. I am glad someone showed you how to setup you video. I didn't want to be the jerk who said, "your video quality is garbage" and not offer any solutions 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Much improvement!!!! ❤
I know how to transcribe a song here and there, but this is a more completed guide on the topic and you have pinpointed things that will be useful in the long run. For some songs I was wondering why some chords appears in a key that it doesn’t belong to, your elaboration on it is clear. Appreciate the content. You earn a subscriber!
THE most informative useful knowledge, essential, no padding. Just 30 years of learning compressed into a short vid. Like they say, if your teacher makes it clear and simple they know their stuff, and this guy absolutely knows his stuff, thanks . Ps, I’ve been playing 40 years and I learned too, thanks again .

So glad you redid this one! Thought about the tattoo, but opted for the poster ... thanks for being the most easygoing tutor up here! You make learning quite effortless! x
Thanks Brian you are a wonderful to teach guitar in an most effective way I have seen so far in the TH-cam. Keep up with your good work and God bless you!👍🙏
It's 1am, looking at my unfinished architecture plate, but I saw you upload and it gave me alot of nostalgia and now I wanna study music theory again at midnight lol
This is brilliantly the weirdest guitar lesson ive ever seen. The way its explained feels more comprehensive compared to traditional approaches. After all these years i feel like ive learned the most from someone that plays by ear.
Thanks for checking out the vid! It all comes down to understanding the basic fundamentals. You'll find that most of my vids talk about this same basic process in one way or another 😁
Funny coincidence, i just learned this song by ear yesterday 😅 guess i need to go back and learn the fills now. Thanks! Just jamming around before and the song popped into my head. i thought it was in C#m and strummed an open E for the last chord but got stuck figuring those dissonant notes on the 3rd chord. so i checked out the recording and could hear the key was Cm not C#m which changed everything. Made it real easy to figure out its Ab bar chord but with the e and b strings open. Makes that cool grungy open string part of the riff if you listen closely.
I think the reason why it's the most viewed video is because many guitarists really want to know how to play songs by ear. So probably if you did more videos on the same, they'll receive the same traction
I just realized this myself. Guitarists pick up guitar because it’s cool as shit… not to become a well rounded musician! Lol Then one day you realize you’re still playing it because you genuinely LOVE music, learning, torturing yourself… and that there’s nothing cooler than figuring out a song on the spot by the pool (Texas) or campfire (New York).
Okay, Brian, I have a challenge for you. Since your lessons always challenge me, I figure you owe me one, lol. Seriously, I enjoy your approach and your encouragement sooo much. Appreciate it bud. Here it is.... No matter how hard I try, I just CANNOT figure out the outro solo to Izzy Stradlins' great song Shuffle it all. I am pretty sure it is in D Major pentatonic, but I am just not hearing it like the record . I bet it would take you 2 minutes. Please keep up the good work. You are helping more people than you know.
Brian, I did notice the upgraded video production bits, even before you mentioned it. Not that you were doing poorly before, but with the fun wipes and the lighting, etc., it just looks a bit more polished now. Your cuts actually help to move the narrative forward, and this is a really cohesive lesson. In other words, the advice you got from Chris seem to have you really focused on effective editing. Once again, you exceed expectations. One of your best, in my opinion. Have you made a video yet on the DAW you use and how you set it up for learning a song? That had me intrigued.
Nice job Brian. And the video quality improved in my opinion, the older ones are a little blurry, this one is more in focus... But great content as always, i am a huge fan.
Every video of yours has taught me something worth knowing, I was very confused by a lot of the stuff on this site. But after you explain certain things and the way you break it down, it makes that ah hah/light bulb moment come out. Great stuff 👏 👍
Hey Grant, thanks for the comment. I'm glad to hear that things are starting to make sense for ya. If you don't mind, what specifically did you find confusing on the site?
@@zombieguitar I mean the way other people on TH-cam describe music theory. Some of them tend to explain it in a way to that doesn't make much sense to a beginner, whereas you have a talent when it comes to helping me in my understanding of such things.
The video looks great! The content is more than great! I had watched the original video when it was created and gained a wealth of knowledge. I again watched the new video and still learned a lot . Your guitar teaching skills are top notch! Thank you! 🙏👏
I watched this video, then watched the "Modes 101" video from about 7 years ago. Boom!!! What a difference in quality Brian, congratulations on your editing and producton progress .... it was such a pleasure to watch this lesson!! That hour with Christpher Perilli has worked miracles (please pass on the gratitude of ALL of us Zombies to him) .... the backdrop, scenery and lighting, facial quality, and the graphics (which have always been awesome), have all contributed to produce such a fantastic standard, which we can now expect from all your future videos. Well done Mr Kelly ... mission accomplished!!! How long will 1.2 million views take with this version? Good call. I do need to fix that. That is because my lights are pointed straight ahead instead of from up above. My stands don't have downward tilt, so I have to figure out a solution...I will though. Thanks for the feedback!
I've been playing on and off for bout 30 years and I've recently totally dedicated myself to learning as much as possible about the guitar. I understood some of this stuff you laid out here on some level but this video and the other one you did several years back has really refined my understanding of song structure and chord progressions, especially the out of key chords. It's also helped me to hear how the chords in a key interact which is really the magic of the song. Since I recently immersed myself in playing I have been trying to get the solo down for fade to black and I've made a lot of progress but there are several fast licks that I still can't get up to the recordings tempo. Seems like at 120 bpm it falls apart and what I'm working towards is sixteenth notes at 140 bpm. I have tried everything over the last five months. Do you have anything on HOW to practice fast licks like those in that song or common mistakes people make?
