Hey everyone! I decided against premiering this one, as I didn't like the prospect of somebody potentially thoughtlessly clicking on the video to be greeted by a fat spoiler as the premiere ran, instead I decided to straight up drop it. Please enjoy, this one took some time to bang together so hopefully it's not complete arse.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to put together a thoughtful critique / review like this! You’re a great addition to the long form review community that I follow on TH-cam! 👌
Really well done. Despite the fact that so many others have been crapping all over it, I’m glad you persisted and finished the game. I was playing the PC version and had perhaps 3 or maybe 4 glitches over the course of the entire game. Was it perfect? No, but a ton of fun even with having gotten the massive accidental spoiler about Bode. Again, nice work.
If only Aniken had a strong black female, as a life coach, instead of that murderous quitter Kenobi (psst... I hear hes racist too). Ahhh, Disney, I hope everyone involved with the reason this joke even makes since, is as miserable and soulless, as the leadership appears.
I think Bode genuinely cared for Cal. After the story you can find echoes about Bodes betrayal where he expresses genuine concern for Cal's safety. I think Bode attempts to bring Cal away from the Jedi code was to get him to go to Tanalore with him. And when they kill Dagan Bode tries to convince Cal to keep the compass to themselves. Bode's betrayal seems more like a last resort than his main intention throughout the game.
Or how when you go to Nova Garon, Bode straight up says how Tanalorr would have been a refuge for both of their families, but then Cal was going to give it to the Hidden Path, or as Bode says "a bunch of strangers."
Personally Bode is a really good character because he makes you frustrated. We see from Cal perspective that everyone can go to tanalor and be safe and happy he would have just chilled out and trusted Cal. But from Bode perspective, He is the traitor that Cal already trusts, so in Bode eyes, Cal is already able to be fooled and what he selfishly wants is a 100% garentee safety of what's left of his family. I still feel they could have come to an agreement, but Bode let his fear lead him astray just as Yoda warns anakin about...
Bode being a traitor I did not see coming. Mainly bc I came from Rdr2 n I trust Charles with my life and I was too scared of bode dying to notice him being silly suspicious.
Understandable, but I've heard Noshir Dalal voice random thugs Spider-Man clarts out in either Spider-Man Miles Morales or the Marvel's Spider-Man DLC I think, so I knew not to expect ole Charles.
i had suspected he was going to betray Cal from the first scene. There was something he said or a small change in his face that made me skeptical of him, but I don’t remember exactly what. i’m sure if i to back with what we know now, i’ll be able to spot some more tip offs.
Meeting Cordova was my favorite unexpected story moment of the year so far. My only real gripe with the story was how underutilized most characters are after their introductions, but that's a problem with many open world/environment games.
I tend to agree with that, across the board few open world games boast a cast of characters whom we meaningfully interact with over the course of a narrative. Often they drop in and out, and more often than not only the once. Jedi Survivor struggles with this and compared to many of its competition it is hardly as vastly open world.
@@Fizhy Fallen Order's overall story felt more cohesive and tangible and immediate, and to our greater point, perhaps that is due to the open nature of the game itself. Fallen Order didn't have much more to do than progressing the story. Still, Survivor's character moments outmatch Fallen Order in just about every way, and that's what draws me to the game's story. I'm very ambivalent about Star Wars, so the familiar trappings themselves do little for me. That said, these couple Jedi games might be my favorite Star Wars stories in the canon. Aside from Bode's betrayal being a little underbaked, I kept asking myself what's so important about Tanalorr other than being the galaxy's secret clubhouse for cool force wielders only? I hope there's some greater significance in the next Jedi.
@@learntoswimifyTanalorr is special because it's not registered in the Imperial database and because it's hard to reach it, Kal explains it after he meets Dagan I think
I think a lot of people find the story disappointing because they want a story that has implications on the galaxy at large, or even a significant piece of history between revenge of the sith and a new hope, but the story isn’t about the galaxy, it’s about Cal. Dagan Garan’s motivations aren’t clear, and the game would certainly have been helped with a more evil intent, or at least a more antagonistic intent, but Dagan isn’t there to threaten the galaxy, he’s no threat to the Empire, he wouldn’t be a threat to the galaxy for a thousand years, but he is a threat to Cal, specifically Cal’s sense of purpose. He represents what obsession can do to a Jedi, something Cal recognizes in Dagan but not in himself. Bode also represents Cals obsession, but an obsession Cal doesn’t notice until it’s too late. He gets blindsided by it and starts to fall to the dark side with his own obsession of Bodes betrayal but he finally recognizes his obsession with trying to make Bode pay, he almost falls right to the point where the 9th Sister was at the beginning. Idk, I’m no great intellectual, and maybe people who felt dissatisfied with the story understood that it wasn’t about the galaxy but about Cal, but that’s kind of what I got out of the story.
Amazing analysis and brilliantly said. I personally thought at first Daggan was parallel to Anakin with his ambition and obsession and his lover being his opposer, but after Merrin's dialogue at the camp fire I understood how it was supposed to be a reflection of Cal and his obsession. As Fizhy points out it was mostly in Cal's head how the breakup of the crew seemed worse than it actually was which shows how lost Cal really was. By losing himself to his goal he loses everything around him, as Daggan lost Khri and as Anakin lost Padme. I think Daggan was a great protagonist in terms of how he ideologically mirrors Cal but at the same I understand and agree with the aspect he feels underdeveloped and directionless, especially compared to how amazingly written Trilla was. Trilla did what she did out of hate and to survive, another parallel to Cal who hid through while she had pervert her life teachings and goals. For Daggan we don't really know why he wanted Talanor so bad that he went against the council, at least Anakin had the wish to save Padme, so in the end feels kinda like he was there for the sake of being there. Personally, I think Talanor was handled fine as well. I understand why people were disappointed but I didn't expect much because it was supposed to be end game. It was never supposed to be something to explore but something to witness, as a grand sight, like taking in the view after making a hike. At the same I was disappointed by the fact there was no mention of what happened to the Nihil, and overall the fact there was a lot less high republic. Fallen Order had such a strong and rich culture surrounding the Zeffo I was hoping the High republic would too, something you can find glimpses of in the Chambers. Very excited to see the third installation. Imo Cal should join up with rebellion so he isn't just a lightsaber but also does what he does best, getting results. That way he'll contribute to the larger narrative more while remaining self contained.
Dagan's motivation was his legacy. He wanted something that would leave him remembered for all time. Leader of his own temple on his own planet that he discovered and named. When the council backed out, he felt betrayed. Like Anakin, he felt like his greatness was being held back
It’s disappointing because it’s poorly written. Too many Mcguffins, weak dialogue, predictable characters. Listening to these cutscenes honestly feels like a bad fanfiction at times.
@@fhkd10The only problem with having him join up with the rebels is that it pretty much guarantees that he has to die before the start of the OT, otherwise it would make no sense for Obi-Wan to be the only Jedi that anyone is aware of surviving.
This game made Cal go from a “eh, he’s fun” jedi to arguably my favourite. Also, bit of a crackfic, but I REALLY wanna see him either fight or team up with Starkiller from TFU. That would be pretty epic.
I promise you if you like cal you do NOT wanna see this man fight starkiller. It’d be like when people tuned into a Tyson fight and he flattens the other guy while they’re getting a drink lol
I would say that I want a live action show focused on Cal, but ONLY if the writers from the games get to write the story without interference from Disney.
He does have the most versatile lightsaber I’ve ever seen. Being able to quickly swap between that many lengths is impressive (even if it’s not exclusive to Cal). And he can even change the components and materials of his lightsaber too.
Again it seems Bode's character has been misunderstood. It's true, Bode was initially an ISB agent and played the fool well... up until a certain point. When Tanalorr becomes a possibility, Bode changes and genuinely becomes close with Cal. It may've been an act starting out but Cal endeared himself to the ex-Jedi, allowing a brotherly bond to form between the two. That was genuine and nobody can convince me otherwise. The only reason Bode turned was because Cal wanted to turn Tanalorr into a target, not a home and thus his daughter would've become at risk. I don't blame him - I do hate his choices, but I can understand it. But Bode went down the path Anakin did - too afraid to lose what little he had. There was no saving him from that. Who knows? Perhaps this outcome would've happened anyways in some way or another.
i feel like his turn was so drastic, i can get with him trying to save his family but i hated how they made him a jedi. it also felt like they made him overly evil just to justify calling killing him.
@@jackd6269Bode became a Dark Jedi, one that is not a Sith, who serve only themselves, fuck everyone else; Bode, however, is obsessed with the love for his daughter, and in willing to do anything and everything for her is blinded by a potential third path he only sees the surface of

I can't help feeling like Jedi Survivor feels like a sequel that the writers went in with respect and decided to call back to Fallen order and actually try to build off of it as well as tell a story with new morals to it. It doesn't feel like it is what was in the plan for a trilogy, but it is still an example of what can be done with a Star Wars story, even if the whole trilogy isn't planned from the start. Sad that Disney didn't have any of the writers for these games because thy may have made a good sequel trilogy.
In my experience: I was having a blast almost the entire time Just when I thought the story was stating to get boring they slapped me in the face with the climax. However, the ending felt weak, while seeing cal fight with the dark side was fun, the whole “chase down bode” thing, felt unfinished/rushed Overall I’d give the game a solid 9/10
See, you feel that way about the ending, but from another perspective I see the ending feeling uncertain and inconclusive to be completely intentional. We have as many answers as Cal, which is to say not really any. It's messy, emotional, and ultimately meaningless sacrifice. Bode was not huge in ideals and acting irrationally. In the end that path only amounted to wasted time and life.
if you didn’t read Battle Scars you aren’t missing much, the author of the book basically made herself a main character and did a fan fiction horn dog story of merrin and the character that is described to look just like the author
Ew. Glad I skipped that garbage. When I first heard that there was a book between the two games and that Merrin had a female love interest, I lost all hope for the romance between her and Cal in the second game, but it pleasantly proved me wrong and I really enjoy their relationship. It's cool seeing just how much they lean on and support each other.
I think my only big issue was that the final act felt a little anticlimatic. The end of the second act was absolutely phenomenal, it felt like the conclusion didn't really live up to it. The game sort of just... ended.
Yea I expected a couple hours on tanalor since the whole game built up to getting there and then it just ends after 20 mins of arriving there. Wish we saw more of it, all the jedi temples maybe some high republic like cosmetics and a final boss fight against Dagan on tanalor
I would agree, although I definitely was all for exacting revenge on Bode. Fuck him to the core. I liked the story overall, but I wish we’d had more time with the Mantis crew/Cordova together before the end. Tragic as hell… Edit: yea we’d built up to Tanalorr so much and for it to basically just be a boss fight was kinda underwhelming. Really wish we’d gotten a more fleshed out 3rd act. Maybe some more time with Rayviss and Dagan as well.
On the planet coruscant there is a store with a sign in Aurebesh when translated says “ponchos” they stuck a poncho shop easter egg in the game!! That felt like a cameron Monaghan note lol!!
Now i noticed something that many people do not talk about, and that is merrin. I am a sucker for romance, and this is such a good love story, even in fallen order it was teased somewhat, and from what i heard in that novel i didn't yet read. But she is a constant in his heart, to some degree she always liked her more than a friend, and the kiss scenes, and the eventual line about the order being gone are also important to the story. She is the reason cal did not succumb to the dark side, he loves are and when he sees the pain in her eyes or nova gerra(dont shoot me for butchering the name) is what calms him. On the joruney to heal and accept the past and move on she is what he needs. She left to come sure of herself and now she can actually help him on this journey. It also plays a nice role and i think it has to be important that in the end despite losing so many people he has a family. The mom dad daughter and the comic uncle. They are a perfect crew nonetheless, even after the tragic deaths lf so many people. It is a story about Cal's growth and is it a good one. But in the story and some scenes marrin and her actions change cal, they shift something in him, and the influence she has is imense. Despite the shackles of the order he knows what he has is real, love, something that not many people experince and to such compatibility. Another thing to notice is that she is written amazing, her growth and self discovery not only in the way she talks and how she dresses, but also in the way she carries herself. Hurt and alone but at peace with the past, a wound that will never fully heal but is manageable. She was shy, talked less and was a cold person while cal was the outgoing one, sun and rhe moon type of thing. But 5 years later the roles are reversed but some what balanced. She still is pretty cold to newcomers and retains the way she was around people she doesn't know, but the journey she took helped her recover and find herself so she is more like cal was in the first game. He is darker, more cruel and prone to snapping, while trying to be at least half the way he was in the first game. The contrast is excellent and the relationships between these two is very important and integral to the plot. Remove her and you definitely get a dark side cal which would have been an interesting route but not one I'd ever want to see executed
I think Merrin is what Padmé should have been for Anakin. Padmé was too blind to see how Skywalker has slowly shifted in behaviour, or maybe she genuinely had no idea he was this close to his breaking point. Maybe Merrin being a force user allows her to actually feel the darkness taking over Cal’s mind and she knows how to mitigate it through her words (best seen when she stopped Cal from killing the ISB leader). She seemingly knows Cal MUCH better than Padmé knew Anakin.
A detail I didn’t notice the first time around that was really awesome when I did finally notice was when the thing with Bode happens, Cal stops chasing him to dodge the grenade but BD jumps off his shoulder to keep going after Bode. I thought that really solidified BD as a real character with motives and not just a tool for the player to use.
Okay, Bode's character post-twist has really impressed me. One of the common misreadings I see from people regarding the OT is that Darth Vader is redeemed because he goes back to being Anakin Skywalker to save his son. Bode is making a point about what that version of Anakin Skywalker would be like - a monstrous person who'd sacrifice thousands or millions of people for their child. Darth Vader's redemption comes from finally doing what is right rather than what is best for him, inspired by Luke doing the same thing just moments before.
It's also the complexity of humanity. Anakin did not turn because he was a terrible person, the dark side is in everyone, and everyone is not perfect. We all make mistakes but that doesn't make us evil. Vader still had love for his family, it was all that was left after his wife and mother died. No sane man would choose power over their love for their family.
I felt that Cal getting out Dagan out of the bacta tank is the right desicion at the time as throught his visions of Dagans memories he knows Gera can take him to Tanaalore and as of that moment there was no clue that he would turn to the Darkside, seeing how few Jedi are left and still with a strong resolve to keep fighting the Empire is in Cal character to free him, of course this being Star Wars things are never as straight forward as it seems. You can tell Bode never planned to betrayed Cal and the crew after they defeat Dagan Gera and Cal expresses to him his desire to create an army in Tanaalore to fight the empire, but once Bode understood where Cal plans satyed he decide to sell them to Vader, fufilling his mission for the ISB and leading Cal to them so he can escape with his daughter to Tanaalore
To be fair, from what we can see at least, the only picture of Cal Kestis the empire has is when he was still only a scrapper on Bracca. And since then Cal’s face has definitely aged a ton and he does canonically have a dope ass beard, so it’s not TOTALLY impossible for the imperial base to not recognise him as the fugitive from Bracca (Plus you have to factor in the observer bias, you can’t exactly spot someone you aren’t looking for in the first place). But yeah, Cal is definitely using the wrong uniform to be undercover
I i really liked this story. The plot itself isn't great and to contrieved for my liking, but most of the characters are pretty strong. Dagan is definetly the weakest of the main bunch. Also, I wish there was more of Rayvis. D.C. Douglas voice acting was orgasmicly awesome.
* talking about how dumb it was that obiwan dismissing a blaster just cause it’s not elegant enough for Jedi.* *then immediately proceeds to dismiss the cross guard stance because it’s not elegant enough for a Jedi*
Not elegant enough for me is probably most accurate. Also to be fair, I just find Obi Wan's opinion on blasters being applied to Jedi on the whole weird, not Obi Wan's preference in itself.
What are you playing on? I played on Xbox and it was totally fine... Can't speak about PS5 and definitely not PC. Curious about steam deck and ASUS ROG ally players 😮😮
I actually started suspecting Bode from the first moment he appearred on Koboh right after Cal. Amd soon after, the Empire came by. I think this story needed way more Red Herrings for who could beyray the party, something like one of those original team members from the Coruscant mission, two or three of them, with Bode. If they could shuffle the suspicion arround, that would actually be perfect.
I commented on Lazzers video about the plot that I believe Bode's inevitable betrayal was deliberately and clearly foreshadowed by the devs in order to lure the players away from a separate plot twist and reveal, that is Bode being a former Jedi himself. Just about every video and comment I've seen states that they saw Bode's betrayal coming and that it was obvious, but nobody predicted he was once a member of the Jedi Order. So when Cal is first confronting Bode on that mountain top, the player is thinking "I knew it" and like Cal, wonders why Bode did it. But the moment Bode force pushed Cal away, it caught everyone off guard. It also makes Bode's betrayal hurt more, not just to Cal but to his whole crew, even Merrin, who used to despise all Jedi, now has a newfound respect and admiration for them because of her love and respect for Cal, so when Greez mentions Bode being a Jedi and an Imperial spy, Merrin is disgusted by this and declares with venom that Bode is no Jedi, implying he's not respectable enough to be labeled as such. I think this twist is absolutely BRILLIANT. A lot of people talk about how the betrayal was just way too obvious like it's a bad thing, but I disagree. The reveal that Bode was a Jedi would not have landed so hard if we hadn't accurately predicted his betrayal, his force abilities hit harder because we never saw it coming, we were too focused on what he would do that we were blind to what he truly COULD do, and that is why that reveal is literally so chilling. We thought we had it all figured out only to realize it was so much deeper than we could have imagined.
When asked how he got his hands on an Imperial Starpath unit Cassian Andor explained that he simply walked into the base and took it. The Imperials are so arrogant and believe they are so in control they can't conceive of an person just walking in the front door and taking whatever they want. They have grown too complacent.
I'm at 27:45 and I like what you said about the plot points. There's no huge plot to fight the empire or create a new Jedi Order. They're just surviving. I felt that when I started playing this and I liked that. It was refreshing.
I assume the betrayal was as obviously projected as it was during the game to make the twist of him being (in my mind) the Jedi Survivor in the title (not Cal) more shocking. And I also think Bode served as a tool to introduce a child figure, Cal and Merrin have to take care of, which will most likely be a big plot device of the next game without them having to give birth to and raise a child of their own to a certain age first. (Btw: What are you saying? Cal has a glorious beard, how would they recognize him?!) I liked Cere a lot already but her giving Vader such a hard time as she did, manifested my massive respect for her and her abilities. I agree with your pacing commentary but Jedi Survivor is not a self contained story, it's just (as you briefly mentioned) the middle part of a trilogy. That doesn't excuse the pacing issues but it comes down the most to how it integrates as a whole with the finale game in the future. I think at least. In the end I think Cal's story will be one that emphasizes the misconceptions about the force and what's dark and light and right and wrong by the Jedi Order and that it ultimately doesn't come down to light sight and dark side but the people who utilize it instead and in what ways. As well as how important emotional balance is, not restrictions, not the denial of attachments but clear (but not inflexible and not stuck up) morals as well as healthy relationships with the people around one and their support.
I feel that the authors decided more than one new main character would be too much to juggle but also know that just having Bode made him suspicious as gamers are always aware of common tropes. I believe it was a decision on their part to not hide his deceitful nature and lean into the idea he may be a traitor or die(which he did both 😂)
Pretty much the reason why Jedi Order fell is that: they did let their fear consume them. They were afraid of the Dark side, of falling to it and thus were fearful towards emotions and attachments. It'd not be that much of a stretch to say that they were afraid of the whole galaxy due to every experience, interaction with it would produce emotions they had to suppress. While true Jedi way is to form genuine connections with literally every part of life, feel any kind of love towards any living being
I like the ending of the game and it makes me want to see more for sure, im assuming cal and merrin will raise Kata as like a foster child which is pretty cool, or merrin will at least cus Kata seems to like her. Amazing video as always
_The Jedi Games have been the best Star Wars Films to be released as of late._ Sidenote: Not Embracing the Darkside just leads to death. As it was the first option I 'chose'.

A cool detail of the escape from Coruscant is that the shrapnel from Bravo’s ship, when it explodes, is embedded into the mantis. The idea is that all of these deaths, all this violence, are taking a toll on Cal.
Despite this video not performing nearly as well as most of your content, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to bring your sober and measured analysis to this game. I love the game while also agreeing with most of your critiques. It is very good, but it could have also been even a bit better. Here's to hoping against hope that Jedi 3 (my bet is on the name "Jedi: Legacy") will fulfill that destiny.
You have a voice I like listening to, but at the same time it doesn't take my attention away from what I need to do if I play your videos in the background
Honestly you talk of Bode being suspicious and the twist coming up being obvious but I didn’t see it coming at all. I don’t find uncertainty suspicious really and it just felt like a victory lap before the twist came, I got really invested in the win
There are too many conveniences and too much foreshadowing along with the quick development of a bond between two characters who had basically just met each other. Unless it was playing into a plot twist, it was out of place. With Dagan's defeat and the game not feeling over, the final act needed a meaningful antagonist so a betrayal was obvious and due to a lack of potential directions for such an event to come from, so it was clear with Bode from where I was sitting.
@@Fizhy that’s fair, I’m just glad to not think like that. No offence, but i much prefer being shocked by a twist than seeing it coming by looking at a game through an analytical lense
@@TenthSgtSnipes it's not a mindset, one way or another you go into a story with expectations that constantly adapt and change as the narrative feeds information to you, whether you consciously do so or subconsciously. I happened to pick up on Bode, you did not. That's fine, I guarantee you also picked up on something that I may not have because stories follow patterns and methods that can be identified. I too would prefer to be shocked at a twist, that just wasn't the case here.
I'd been suspicious of Bode at the outset and then forgotten entirely, only figuring it out by watching Bode's last attempt to convince Cal on Jedha the night before the attack. It was well acted, you can see Bode throwing out a last attempt at convincing Cal. Upon seeing that Cal won't change course, he resignedly puts the mask back up, weary but resolved in his decision.
@@yarp1246hell yeah Kotallo is such a good character in that game, I loved his story arc from being depressed from losing his arm to embracing it, becoming stronger by it and even refusing to use the prosthetic that he and GAIA made. Also he was just a straight up badass soldier, a true Tenakth.
I absolutely knew Bode was going to betray you, I felt it through the whole game. What I didn't see coming was him being a damn jedi lol. That initial force push made me literally yell WTF! Also Kata is obviously a future antagonist.
I don’t comment very often and it took me several sittings. But thank you for this Fizhy! A superb video, with several points to consider. Thank you for your hard work and effort
For me Jedi: Survivor is the best Star Wars game I have ever played. I identify with Cal and Bode so much. I see both sides of their conflict. You get to see their bond forming. The tragedy of it being shattered. You understand Bode's fear. You understand Cal's resolve. You understand why they are in conflict and it's heartbreaking.
Don't bother with Battle Scars, it has almost nothing to do with this game, and if you had read the book before playing the game as I had, Merrin's character in this makes no sense and does not line up, at all.
Ive seen a lot of people talk about how the final chunk of the story is unfinished, and while I agree, i think thats the point. JFO was a story of its own. Survivor works on its own, but it can only truly shine with a sequel. Because, as we see by the end of the game, that is where Cal truly embraces his darkness. As a result, i believe itll be him either controlling or moving past his darkness in the third game
I don't believe Vader is a "continuity enforcer bogeyman." He did the Emperors dirty work and would step in when the normal rank and file couldn't handle it. It makes total sense for Vader to step in at times like this since no one else was apparently able to. The fact there was 2 jedi masters there also gives purpose to the encounter, why wouldn't they send the man who can actually kill jedi to go deal with a pair or more. This is the base of the hidden path afterall. Viewing it as purely a gameplay setpiece is kind of shallow and shows misunderstanding of what Vader actually is. Looking at it from a lore standpoint he's not correcting continuity errors, those things don't happen because he stopped them. There's no doubt many more situations where Vader stepped in and put a stop to it before anything came from it so telling a story that ends in such isn't strange at all. I mean he didn't just sit around for years on end doing nothing, Vader was a busy man.
Honestly, I never picked up on the Cere section being Cal using his Psychometry. I thought it was just a straight-up perspective switch, and I saw it as a cheap, forced Vader cameo. Knowing it's something Cal's actually seeing, as small a detail as it is, has definitely changed my only big gripe with the game for the better.
And also, bloody good job as always! I definitely didn't see a video of this length coming, but it's clear you've put the same care and effort as you do with your regular content into this. Overall I had a blast watching it!
@@reecenotryhs it's never stated per say but the transition in which the fire immediately disappears and the force effect suggests that Cal is using force psychometry to witness Cere's final moments.
That’s what I’m thinking, too. I think a lot that is harder to appreciate now will be easier upon the completion of the trilogy as this is clearly intended as one.
15:32 The information Cal accessed could have been Imperial troop movements recorded in a Starpath unit on the Senators' ship. The Starpath units are used by Imperial military and intelligence officers to understand the position and strength of military assets throughout the galaxy so that operations can be planned with up to date information. Cassian Andor was trying to sell one of these to the Rebellion when he was recruited.
50:16 can someone refresh my memory on how much cal actually talked to bode about Cere before this point? "It's so nice to _finally_ meet you" sounds really ominous in hindsight if i'm not forgetting any certain interactions
Most likely it was offscreen, otherwise I suppose it's another hint to Bode working undercover because he must have heard about her through his Empire connection (he does distinctly say like he knows who Cere is in his echoes post game). Also possible he may have overheard Greez and Cal's conversations here and there about going to her. I think it's a mix of the later 2 though.
I would have switched the final boss between Bode, and Dagan. Bode is a very personal kind of character and I think he's complicated in a way that his emotions aren't two dimensional and perfectly parallels Cal's own set of choices and character as both are being honed as gray in morals. Think about how like with Vaas and Jason Brody from Far Cry 3. Sure, Vaas isn't the main villain, but he is the face you remember all the way until you see Vaas in Jason. I see a similar dynamic with Bode and Cal, but Cal does know the steps he had taken and what it means for himself even after the journey's end. In a way, I think Cal's story is not that of being a Jedi, but an interesting way of taking what was lost back. And in Survivor, it fulfills the title's meaning that Cal did what he must in order to survive. In a way, it feels realistic, because it feels incomplete yet, at the same time one feels alive. It's a very personal journey overall.
I don't think that Bode was being annoying here. He's trying to allow Cal to have the happiness he found with his wife. Perhaps it's partially to see this happiness second hand to honor his wife. 1:16:13
I personally think that bode has known cal at least a month before the beginning of the game as he would need to be trust bode to be the one with cals lightsaber and to have him learn the plan for corucant
Fizhy can’t see how Cal would think that someone who *was* and *is* a Jedi, would be an ally? The traumatized padawn thinking it might finally not just be him is…stupid for that? What? Dark Jedi existing doesn’t mean he should now suspicious of every jedi just because some have fallen to the dark side. Is it stupid for him to not be suspicious and avoidant of Cere now? He has more reason to think she might fall than the guy that all he knows about is that he was a straight up *actual* Jedi in the prime of fthe order when it was at peak “jedi-ness” without any order 66 angst. That’s like saying all old republic Jedi should just be insanely paranoid and suspicious of each other and don’t help one another just because Sith and dark jedi…exist?
@2:12:40 I had the same feeling about the imperial disguise in my first playthrough, but the second time through its really like 2 hallways you go down straight to Bodes apartment and the jig is up right after that. Plus with the alert having just been called off moments before, I think the Imperials were just not paying attention anymore. Unless you choose to stop and talk to the different officers, stormtroopers and the purge trooper who talks some mad shit, there's only a handful of people you actually have to interact with and Cal uses mind tricks on them to get through the gate. Kind of like in the Hitman series, normal passerby won't know you're dressed in someone else's clothes, but as soon as they're alerted to you they see through the disguise immediately.
I like how cal didn’t probably want to shoot bode. He aimed but hesitated and saw that bode didn’t hesitate to fire despite his gun being broken. The only thing that made cal shoot was the fact that bode would have
I honestly don't believe that so many reviewers called out Bode's character immediately. It's far more realistic that his exposition and introduction is overly friendly because he's a new companion character that for many, will unexpectedly be the replacement for the mantis crew that all of us had been looking forward to seeing again. Regardless of twists, this was a character sticking around and needed to be sympathetic and likable as quickly as possible to settle the turbulence of a new story beginning. With that, I can't help but feel people discussing this in videos and articles are playing more tongue-in-cheek about the twist than that it was fully predictable at the very start.
I enjoyed your critique and playthrough! I think when you consider both games, Cal and the Mantis crew and their story is one for the ages. The heart of Star Wars has always come from the characters, and for Jedi Survivor I think they outdid themselves. It's not easy to write a self-contained prequel in this universe - one with real, meaningful stakes, but they pulled it off nicely. The question remains - how to finish off this trilogy?
The map isnt a map of imperial worlds. Its imperial fleets. Entire armies and star destroyers and stuff like that. Its a pretty terrifying prospect considering not every imperial planet has a star destroyer hovering in the atmosphere but even those planets have troops stationed there.
I wish we saw more of Dagan Gera he felt a little wasted for me. Also they wasted Tanalor. Whole time you try to get there and when you do it’s the smallest planet in the game where you spend 20 mins beating bode and then leave and never come back. I hoped to see tanalor as they described at least an hour or 2 of content after the ending exploring tanalor the jedi temples and all that. But good game imo (except the performance issues)
Also Dagan should’ve been the final boss of the game not bode. Even though the story around bode is great I think beating him before and then Dagan in the end would’ve been better imo
@@6ercan I think we'll get to see much more of Tanalorr in whatever comes next, but for the time being I agree on the front that it felt a little too rushed for the final segment of Jedi Survivor and Dagan could have been far more interesting than he actually was.
The music in this game is amazing. I can't think of too many games scored as well as Jedi Survivor is. Amazing story, great gameplay too. Such a shame that technical issues took away from such a great addition to the Star Wars lore.
Absolutely outstanding video Fizhy. The effort, time, love and care put into it is fantastic. I love Jedi Survivor, I love the story of Cal Kestis. This was a fantastic watch!
Jedi survivor made me feel for and invest in a character more than any other game I’ve played (although I don’t play that many single player games to be fair). After the first game and Merrin’s return I was very invested in their relationship and when they kissed the first time I have to admit I was very excited for these 2 fictional characters finally getting together. During Bode’s betrayal I felt so much anger towards, again, a fictional character. I felt so robbed by him and so personally offended that I needed to make him pay, and at that moment I was almost sad that I had to dish out that payment through Cal, since he would almost certainly let him off too light for what I wanted. Like when they track Bode to Nova Garron and say Bode has a daughter, I’m sat there thinking ah perfect, let’s make Bode suffer the way we have. Although my favourite part is after defeating him and shooting Bode I start shouting to Cal, yeah, yeah again do it again to which he actually did, although 2 is such an ugly number, 3 feels so much more round ya know. I truely think the game managed to make me feel all the emotions Cal was, even down to the emptiness of killing Bode and being like, well this didn’t bring Cere back. Also I have to mention how while I felt things were going a bit too well that something would go wrong, I didn’t see the betrayal coming, I thought the empire would just stumble upon them. And while I was still recovering from the shock of Bode’s betrayal, he hits us with the force and now I’m even more shook. Also after Cordova’s death I was genuinely scared thinking anyone could die, I agree once Vader showed up we all knew how it was ending, but until then I was like you better not hurt Merrin I swear to god.
Great video, Fizhy! 32:08 Oh I noticed that too lol 44:46 I feel a bunch of post order 66 Star Wars kinda does away from with "no attatchments" thing. I mean you'd hope that characters would learn from the Jedi Order's biggest defeat but also let's not forget how in the original trilogy Yoda and Obi-Wan tried to get Luke to fit into their mold of Jedi only for Luke to resist and eventually (I think) be proven right and have his attatchments to friends and family lead to the downfall of the Empire. 55:03 I wouldn't say the "reward" is worth it if you aren't interested in doing the Bounty Hunts. It's very "ok cool" but pretty unimportant to the experience or story. 01:03:18 Gods, I loved this part. Somehow managed to feel like a roller coaster and an intense platforming challange (tho it wasn't difficult) that eventually let you do a Force Tear which is an awesome challange. It seems double jump + air dash is like the traversal golden ration. 01:18:08 I feel it kinda silly that Cal never thought do that before considering it's like the same thing as Push/Pull but on a different axis and I don't really see what it has to do with perspective. 01:49:01 Yeah at this point it was clear something was off and I suspected the Empire would finally attack that base so I figured that "bedtime story" would be a message sent to the Imps. I just didn't know everything. I guessed he figured having The Hidden Path on Tanalorr would put a target on it so he wanted to prevent that by any means. "The Whole Picture" I felt was a little to convenient and felt out of nowhere. 01:49:59 That is some unexpectedly healthy behaviour for Star Wars lol 02:36:41 Not sure why but I feel it really cool that Cal used the blaster here. Maybe it's fitting that Bode gave him that but also it feels very atypical of a Force wielding character (of any allignment). 02:38:37 Kinda just want to appreciate Cameron's acting. People don't often seem to talk about actor's performance in vidya gamz but I feel they're great here (especially Cameron). Post game makes some Force Echo's appear where Bode has been and give some perspective on things but putting them here well it kinda hides them from most people I guess (there also some other related to the fates of other characters thanks to Darth Continuity Enforcer). Tho not part of the main story exactly, I liked that you could fill the cantina with characters but most of them, sadly, leave when there little side stories are exhausted. I enjoyed this game a lot.
Yeah, I really loved the blaster scene because Bode shot Cal with one to win the first fight and a blaster is used to take his life felt cathartic in a way.
After this I can’t wait for the finale as at the end of fallen order it felt like it could have been the ending but now I am anticipating his complete story
I mean pistol stances is definitely makashi, cross guard is a mix of form 5 and ataru, duel wield is form 6, and form one is cals own amalgamation of the forms. All defence in the game is the forms defences combined with some form 3. Just gotta look at the stuff. Hell, double blade exhibits a little bit of form seven, similar to mauls style of form 7
34:56 It doesn't surprise me Cal frees Dagan. I would be looking for powerful allies as well. Especially after running into Darth Vader. Not mention perhaps Cal felt a Jedi of the High Republic would be less corruptible then the Jedi of the dark times. When I encountered Dagan in the game and he asked to be freed I said out loud "absolutely" I was both shocked and horrified to realize Dagan had already fallen to the dark side.
The Man who hurt Greez will have been Hurt by Darth Maul in the Future, so don't worry
If only Aniken had a strong black female, as a life coach, instead of that murderous quitter Kenobi (psst... I hear hes racist too). Ahhh, Disney, I hope everyone involved with the reason this joke even makes since, is as miserable and soulless, as the leadership appears.

It's stories like these that remind me of how much i love Star Wars and why i love it.
This and Andor are the two things that keep my faith in Star Wars alive.
They just need to get more people who actually LIKE Star Wars to write for it.
This story reeks of Star Wars in a good way. It's wonderful.
@@marvinmallette6795 specifically where can I find this force memory?
Or how when you go to Nova Garon, Bode straight up says how Tanalorr would have been a refuge for both of their families, but then Cal was going to give it to the Hidden Path, or as Bode says "a bunch of strangers."
hell he even says to cal, "dont fight me, save your family"
Personally Bode is a really good character because he makes you frustrated. We see from Cal perspective that everyone can go to tanalor and be safe and happy he would have just chilled out and trusted Cal.
But from Bode perspective, He is the traitor that Cal already trusts, so in Bode eyes, Cal is already able to be fooled and what he selfishly wants is a 100% garentee safety of what's left of his family.
I still feel they could have come to an agreement, but Bode let his fear lead him astray just as Yoda warns anakin about...
He wanted to get Cal to see things his way, and it was only when Cal wouldn't budge did he go forward with ratting them out to the Imps.

That moment was adorable as BD-1 was basically like a puppy in his excitement of seeing Cordova again.
@@learntoswimifyTanalorr is special because it's not registered in the Imperial database and because it's hard to reach it, Kal explains it after he meets Dagan I think
I can't hear Bode's voice without hearing Charles Smith from RDR2, so the betrayal hurt even more. lol
From Star Wars God of War to Star Wars Uncharted

In my experience: I was having a blast almost the entire time
Just when I thought the story was stating to get boring they slapped me in the face with the climax. However, the ending felt weak, while seeing cal fight with the dark side was fun, the whole “chase down bode” thing, felt unfinished/rushed
Overall I’d give the game a solid 9/10
See, you feel that way about the ending, but from another perspective I see the ending feeling uncertain and inconclusive to be completely intentional. We have as many answers as Cal, which is to say not really any. It's messy, emotional, and ultimately meaningless sacrifice. Bode was not huge in ideals and acting irrationally. In the end that path only amounted to wasted time and life.
Just started my new landscape job and 3 hours of Star Wars is exactly what I need

@john
In the book they definitely ellude to something between Cal and Merren
I think my only big issue was that the final act felt a little anticlimatic. The end of the second act was absolutely phenomenal, it felt like the conclusion didn't really live up to it. The game sort of just... ended.
I can see why you’d think that, and in some ways I definitely agree, the ending’s pacing didn’t feel very ending-like
Yea I expected a couple hours on tanalor since the whole game built up to getting there and then it just ends after 20 mins of arriving there. Wish we saw more of it, all the jedi temples maybe some high republic like cosmetics and a final boss fight against Dagan on tanalor
maybe because it meant to be a trilogy? now we are at the end of second act of overarching story.
I would agree, although I definitely was all for exacting revenge on Bode. Fuck him to the core. I liked the story overall, but I wish we’d had more time with the Mantis crew/Cordova together before the end. Tragic as hell…
Edit: yea we’d built up to Tanalorr so much and for it to basically just be a boss fight was kinda underwhelming. Really wish we’d gotten a more fleshed out 3rd act. Maybe some more time with Rayviss and Dagan as well.
Interesting, I thought the opposite.
Cal with the long hair and beard is a vibe
That was my logic, too.
No one blew up Jedha. It merely suffered a tragic mining accident.
This video was a masterpiece sir. I enjoyed this game a lot, I think movies on these games would be amazing - far better than whatever 7-9 were.

It was pretty cool going from like a dragon ishin's sword and gun stance and then playing jedi survivor with the saber/blaster stance
Cal may have gone through a horrible tragedy, but at least he can Use a lightsaber with his ass now lol
Charles Smith left Beechers Hope and went to a galaxy far far away
So he did start a family after all
@@Fizhy once he got to Canada he realized he needed to go to another galaxy instead
I love long form content. Movie length shit or longer so I am here for this.
Cal has a glorious beard, how would they recognize him?!)
I liked Cere a lot already but her giving Vader such a hard time as she did, manifested my massive respect for her and her abilities.
I believe it was a decision on their part to not hide his deceitful nature and lean into the idea he may be a traitor or die(which he did both 😂)
Pretty much the reason why Jedi Order fell is that:
they did let their fear consume them.

Itd be dope if in the 3rd game we get an infamous morality type system, with the light and dark side. Having skill trees for both. OOF

Final plot twist: it was Turgle in a Bode-suit.
Turgle unzips the Bode-suit to reveal that he is the true dark lord.
Cal Kestis is such a well-written character. I hope we'll get the third and final part of his trilogy, and that he won't be done dirty in it.
I am going to call Rayvis "Gigachad Squidward" from now on.
A cool detail of the escape from Coruscant is that the shrapnel from Bravo’s ship, when it explodes, is embedded into the mantis. The idea is that all of these deaths, all this violence, are taking a toll on Cal.
So glad you chose the green lightsaber 🟢🟢
Despite this video not performing nearly as well as most of your content, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to bring your sober and measured analysis to this game. I love the game while also agreeing with most of your critiques. It is very good, but it could have also been even a bit better. Here's to hoping against hope that Jedi 3 (my bet is on the name "Jedi: Legacy") will fulfill that destiny.
You have a voice I like listening to, but at the same time it doesn't take my attention away from what I need to do if I play your videos in the background
Genuinely love these long form kinds of videos. If you do more that would be appreciated
You probably already knew this but the voice actor for bode is the same guy who voiced Charles in red dead 2
I did.
He sounded a lot like him so I was wondering, thank you 🙏🏽🪶
And also Kotallo in Horizon Forbidden West!
@@gregrobinette8620 no problem mate
@@yarp1246hell yeah Kotallo is such a good character in that game, I loved his story arc from being depressed from losing his arm to embracing it, becoming stronger by it and even refusing to use the prosthetic that he and GAIA made. Also he was just a straight up badass soldier, a true Tenakth.
I loved BD’s reaction to seeing Cordova again.
I struggle with long form so I’m pleased you enjoyed it!
So cool Cordova is in this game I loved his actor in Stargate

@@Fizhy I watched the video, and it was really good. Well done.
2:36:40 if you pause here it kind of looks like the bad ending in red dead redemption 2 when Micah said damn you and Arthur said damn us all.
the main reason we got that empty ending feeling this is the jedi's games empire strikes back so we will probs have a better ending for the next
That’s what I’m thinking, too. I think a lot that is harder to appreciate now will be easier upon the completion of the trilogy as this is clearly intended as one.
There were always jedi spies--they were called jedi sentinels. Bode isnt contributing anything, just reinforcing what existed pre-disney
@@fhkd10 yeah that's what i was thinking. He says finally, when, after i went back and checked, he only hears about her from cal in two conversations
He only mentioned her once and he was telling greez that Bode handles a Blaster as well as Cere.
54:06 keeping fingies > elegance of a glowing tube
Vader's gonna kill Cal in the third game. Bet.
Unlikely
Especially since Cal was still fresh from the loss of his team on Corusant.
Whenever Cal uses the darkside he uses Cere's lightsaber style.
Fr i had it spoiled for me but i dont think i wouldve seen his betrayal coming had i not
I enjoyed your critique and playthrough!
Very cool video Sir. Was a joy to listen to.
Is it just me... or does Cal look like Peter Dinklage if he were average hight?
Don't do that to me
I wish we saw more of Dagan Gera he felt a little wasted for me.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor('s guilt)
32:08 Oh I noticed that too lol
44:46 I feel a bunch of post order 66 Star Wars kinda does away from with "no attatchments" thing.
01:49:59 That is some unexpectedly healthy behaviour for Star Wars lol
02:36:41 Not sure why but I feel it really cool that Cal used the blaster here.

It may just be the juicy one.

I’m not gonna lie, I was slightly disappointed when I found out that stances just meant different fighting styles instead of lightsaber forms
Imagine they expand on that in the next game with the different forms, each of which are compatible with several weapon configurations
Afaik from Fallen Order playing with the full Jaro Tapal set with the chromium metal is the only way to go for me.
I can't wait for the 3rd game where we find out Cal is the real Snoke
also i disagree with the final shot on bode. it was already a shot of death, he only spared him further pain.
