  • This video explains how Peterbilt changed the position of the shifter to the steering column. It also explains the safety features available to enable your drivers to keep their eyes on the road and manipulate the truck to conduct multiple functions without having to take your hands off the steering wheel. Safety and ease of operation are the keys. For a demo, feel free to contact me: JW 970-518-5520

    I been driving a manual shift for 35 years and the company gave me a new Pete today with an automatic like the one you are driving. I had to figure out how to drive it on the way back home. I fell in love with the auto transmission but didn't know about the different settings. Going on 500 mile trip tomorrow and will experiment. This video answered a lot of my questions. THANKS.

      Most dealers don't take the time to program the tranny to the driver's preferences. We bring in each driver and go through the possible settings with them. It makes a huge difference.

    • @LargeCarjw
      @LargeCarjw  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @thronic you are 100% correct. Many dealers just push them out the door and expect you to pay later to set parameters or the sales person won't go the extra mile. When I sell a truck, I take the driver out and show him the basics of automated tranny's and learn what he does with driving habits, terrain, etc.. I pay a tech 1 hour after the drive to sit with the customer and set parameters to his liking thus giving them a much more positive experience. 👍 Great comment by the way!

      I am glad you asked.... I am going to do an updated video on this very topic. The Automated Tranny like in this video has a true clutch that automates shifting. A true automatic transmission has a torque converter like most pickups out there today and there is no drop of torque or power between shifts like the automated. I don’t like how long it takes to shift, people behind you think you don’t know how to drive because it takes so long to shift. I did not want an automatic but that’s what companies are going with these days. Was also told that for fleet trucks Peterbilt isn’t even making the manuals anymore. It's important to learn whether the truck you are operating has engine overspeed protection or not. My engine plate reads 1600 rpm max. Yet the transmission tries to surpass that all the time. The reason I ask is that I saw your engine's rpm in the video violently downshifted to over 1700 and wanted to know if you knew about the overspeed protection. If it doesn't have it then driver is responsible for protecting the engine from costly catastrophic damage.

    • @CreRay
      @CreRay ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't a single engine in the 13-litre class that's not capable of mechanically revving up to at least 2100rpm. You need that rpm to get in the effective engine speed range for the engine brake. That's why it shifted into that area in the video, it won't do that unless using the engine brake. The 1600rpm on you engine plate means that it won't turn over 1600rpm when firing (i.e. not braking) because max power is at 1600 and there's no point in revving it higher, it just wastes fuel. But it has nothing to do with the mechanical capability of the engine or where you should be when using the engine brake.

    • @austinmoehring6110
      @austinmoehring6110 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CreRay I drove this type of setup over the road for four years across America. The truck "turned over" 1600rpm all of the time. I thought that the engine plate which read "Max Engine Speed - 1600rpm" meant that 1600rpm is the maximum engine speed it could take. Also I never experienced it cut-off fuel above the 1600 max engine speed. In fact it never cut fuel and always "fired" above that.
      Let's say that after his demonstration of the engine brake, he then quickly disengaged the engine brake by using the accelerator pedal. Then he held his foot on the accelerator pedal about 2/3 full for five to ten seconds. In this scenario, the engine would resume "fire" and even accelerate to more than 2000rpm before shifting into the next appropriate gear.

Yes their design is intended to make it safer and more convenient but the people that now think they can drive are negating any positive effect these types of transmissions are having.

      Back in the day my father told a story about his father. When more and more cars and trucks were going to an automatic transmission him and his friends thought there was no way a machine could be as smart and reliable as a human. Now most every car is an automatic. Same is happening to big trucks. Something youre going to have to live with. If having a manual is THE factor that determines a drivers worth then there are deeper problems with the trucking industry.

    Automated ≠ automated-manual
    Automated was designed by Paccar and Eaton Fuller to be fully controlled by the computer and missing the components that are used in a standard transmission. There are no components that allow a stick to be installed or used on these transmissions whatsoever. The connections to the gears themselves are more direct and do not use a gear shifter or a clutch linkage. This increases the level of control over the transmission and clutch to such a degree that the perfect algorithm quickly and smoothly changes gears and even skips gears rapidly.
    Automated-manual transmissions are a standard transmission that are partially controlled by the computer physically moving the shifter and clutch pedal linkage for the driver using the existing manual transmission and electric solenoids to actually move the gear shifter. (These suck mostly)

      I drive a 2016 Pete 579- when the piece of crap isn't out of service. Latest breakdown was a de-rate fault that has had the truck down for 2 months now, and counting.
      Manual mode allows me to lock out a higher gear than the one I want to cruise in.
      For example, I routinely cross the Allegheny Mountains on the Pennsylvania turnpike. If I allow the truck to automatically shift all the way to 10th gear, the engine is lugging down so much that I am moving slowly enough to cause a traffic hazard. However, if I use manual mode, I can lock out 10th gear and cruise in 9th. At the governed speed limit of 68 mph, the engine is running right at 1500 rpm, and I can maintain road speed until I hit the steepest grades under a heavy load. Another advantage of manual mode is when descending a grade, especially with the Jake brake on. In automatic, mine wants to downshift at fairly high rpms then engage the Jake. This causes a fairly violent deceleration. In manual mode, I can control the downshift point, thus allowing me to maintain speed or smoothly slow down without needing the air brakes until I'm down to about 20mph. Below that point, my Jake brake won't come on at all.

    The enduranceTrans 12 speed is a junk actually Not the mechanical it’s all the software , up shifting Uphill 6 & 7 gears blinks 4-6 then engaged & downshifting uphill from 12 in to 11,10 & 9 gears takes 4-6 blinks before engages again , with 80,000 pounds 4-8 grades hill you’re losing to speed and momentum , the engine break thanks 3 blinks about 2 seconds downshifting in lower gear every time on downhill 4-6 Grade in till it’s thinking to downshift it’s too late needs to go back in a higher gear , this software is a junk I don’t recommend to any to buy this junk Transmission, does a problem they’re testing a brand new and bobtail try after 100,000 miles And full loaded truck , and every time they doing a software update they charging you $$$$ but there is no difference even worse it gets , that’s my advice stay away away but you’re choosing not me I already did and I regret I should get Allison CT10, Paccar don’t listen to customer :(

      @@dakotajohnson9846 i agree. i have driven 8LL, 9, 10, 13, and 18. my current truck is a 2017 T880 manual 18 day cab, sadly all they are buying now are automatics. looks like im going to have to keep that truck as long has he allows me to have it. if im still there 10 years from now then i will still be driving that truck unless he forces me out of it. in that case i might look for another job with a manual.
      i have only had my CDL 2 years and it seems like i am among the last to be able to shift a real transmission. sadly.

    Cuestión when is recomendación oil change in that automatic transmission 2020 piterbilt 579 ?

  • @jonw4501
    @jonw4501 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Safety features". Peterbilt is a joke. There hasn't been a good truck built by them in over a decade. The 579 is a fucking travesty to the industry. No quality control (serious electrical accessorial issues from the factory), lacking features (insulation would be a good fucking start, leather seats with actual cushioning), serious design flaws (poor button placement, useless electronic nannies).
    The fact truck manufacturers sell trucks with anti idle, not requiring an apu to be sold with those trucks, makes them as uncaring for truck drivers as the driver's employer.
