Considering that B-52s can and do carry nukes, nukes will be used to take them out, and just taking off won't keep them safe. They need to be MILES from the base before they're clear.

During the Cold War with Russia (and probably even today) it was assumed that air bases, containing "alert" B-52's, would be vaporized with a nuclear strike within minutes after the alert crews were scrambled. They HAD to be in the air and away from the base in the shortest time possible to survive that strike and carry out their counter strike mission against the Soviets.

    • @billrupp9261

Sadly, Nuclear alert stopped being a thing in 91/92. SAC and it's nuclear mission became a thing of the past. Time to rethink that.

B-52s at California bases literally had minutes to get off the ground due to Soviet subs in international waters off the coast. KC-135 tankers sitting on alert with the bombers had almost zero chance of getting off the ground since they were stacked last in order for takeoff sequence

"Grounded Aircraft" is the wrong term. You should have said "Parked Ready Aircraft" or "Ready Aircraft on the ground".
A grounded aircraft is one which is considered non-airworthy for any reason. I don't doubt that in a national emergency with imminent missiles in the air, actual grounded aircraft would be pressed into taking off if the reason for grounding is minor, but what you meant was all aircraft parked on the ground, armed, fueled, and airworthy.

In the aviation world, "grounded" has a very specific meaning. Applied to aircraft, it means that the aircraft is not airworthy - it cannot fly. Applied to crewmembers - PEOPLE - who hav been removed from flight duty for any of many reasons, but usually either medical or disciplinary.
Your use of "grounded" to simply mean "an airctraft is on the ground" is semanticaly correct. BUT, that meaning is something I have never heard in nearly 30 years associated with aviation - a Marine fighter wing, a USAF transport wing, and a major international airline.

They’re a key component to a counter strike, and they also carry nuclear payload. It’s a multitude of reasons why you want it in the air ASAP. It’s a sitting duck on the ground; and if the aircraft gets taken out, you don’t want the nuclear weapons onboard to detonate and wipe out your air base. In an imaginary war, the B-52s would be a high value target, and one of the first targets targeted by enemy munitions. An ICBM fired from Russia would take 30-60 minutes to reach its target, and the B-52 normally takes over an hour to get airborne. Cutting that time down to about 10 minutes is a force multiplier.

But getting these things in the sky was a staple of our deterrent at that time! Now they can have stealth multirole fighters or B-2/ B-21 to deliver those B61-12 on target. Looking a lot like America is one of the few countries that has this capability. Cool job you had though. Guam is more important than ever, too.

Without even watching the video: the B52 pilots rush and take off at full throttle so they (hopefully) don't get nuked? The full throttle is also because when they are heavily loaded they need full throttle to get off the ground before they run out of runway.
