  • Hiking the Fern Gully trail in the Ozark Forest, Arkansas. The Fern Gully area in the Ozarks is primitive camping, hiking and rappelling area . It is scenic, high bluffs, unmarked trails that you will navigate with an All Trails app or find some trail plodded down by other hikers. There is parking area and the road is very passable but sometimes there might be some puddles , somewhat deep on the gravel road. I recommend a high clearance vehicle (4x4) BUT my Honda CRV front wheel drive SUV did quite well. Sedan is not recommended. Access: you can go on highway 215 from Mountainburg or take 215 north from Mulberry , drive until you come to Wilson road, turn right Forest service road 1544 . Drive until you come to the parking area. Many climbers go there to climb, rappel and camp. We didn’t see any markers on the trail, we just followed along the bluffs and cross back and forth the streams. It is very scenic and recommend that you take plenty of photos. I have hiked this area twice and always I find something exciting that I missed the first time. Definitely recommend sturdy waterproof hiking boots, hiking poles, gloves and plenty of water/snacks. A hunting knife would be recommended. You will cross downed trees and streams back and forth but it is well worth the hike. Please spray your clothes for bugs etc. A ball cap or wide brim hat also recommended plus a first aid kit. Be prepared and have fun.
