  • This run improves the previous record by 1s.
    RTA time: 27s 233ms (prev. 27s 733ms by me)
Using the big koopa-shell to reach the ending pipe has been a theoretical strategy for over a year now. The issue was figuring out how to escort it to the end of the level fast enough to save time.
    Let's breakdown the level,
there's 3 points of interest: the leaf grab, 1st big shell kick, 2nd big shell kick.
I improved the super-leaf grab by bouncing really low on the koopa as early as possible and jumping between the blocks. The throw and controlled jump are a bit awkward, but this sequence saves about 15 frames over any other method.
There are a few key things to know for this next part:
    1. if Mario runs into the left half of a shell, it will be kicked right and vice versa.
    2. a shells speed after being kicked is dependent on Mario's horizontal speed when colliding with it.
    3. tail swiping has 3 hitboxes: 1st behind Mario, 2nd in front Mario, 3rd behind Mario. note: only one hitbox is active at a time.
The goal of the 1st shell kick is to kick it at the perfect speed to the right so that Mario catches up to it in time for the 2nd shell kick. There are 2 problems, the chain chomp post is in the way and Mario needs to slow down to a very precise speed to collide with the shell without being too slow.
After getting the first big shell out the way, I do a backwards jumping tailswipe into the post. The backwards jump lets me tail swipes the shell with both the 1st and 3rd hitboxes which puts the shell on the top platform. Then by intentionally running into the post it kills my speed and sets up Mario's the shell kick nicely by jumping at the right time and holding right.
The 2nd shell kick should now be setup but in the run, I kicked the shell a fraction to slow so I have to make an adjustment by letting go of right briefly. The final trick is a diagonal shell kick which is how we efficiently get around the final wall and why the shell needed a specific speed. Usually, tail swiping a moving shell kills it speed but by tail swiping it within a few frames of kicking the shell, the horizontal speed is conserved with the added upwards momentum of a tail swipe. This completes the shell escort. and it breaks the blocks so we can duck jump into the pipe.
One final note as I say at the end of the video the ending can be done without taking damage by avoiding the goomba and tailswiping the shell as it comes back.
    IL count: 100/100
