    C418 has had one of his three Minecraft albums stored in the back of Minecraft's Original Soundtrack Vault for Years and the real story behind it has never been released, Until now. I Spent about 200 hours creating this video and every element in it so if you could sub or follow elsewhere it would really mean a lot.

      Yeah, I find they don’t fit, and it seems like they just play over and over again (possibly due to being biome-specific since you don’t leave your biome while building your base) while not being as repeat-friendly as C418’s music. I don’t dislike the new music, but I don’t like it either, and it becomes a little annoying to hear it repeat itself for the third time.
      And it’s not just nostalgia either, since I actually liked Volume Beta even when it was new.
      Honestly, it feels a little like when Super Meat Boy got new music after the bad blood between Edmund McMillen and Baranowsky. The new composers may be very talented and may have proven that in previous games, but here their music just feels out of place.

    • @MaoRatto
      @MaoRatto 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

      Here is the thing... It doesn't fit to be honest as Minecraft itself is very repetive, but doesn't mean it is bad. When you have not very "loop friendly" songs it sticks out like a sore thumb. I would love an option to disable newer songs and keep purely the older songs. If made that a staple so that people don't complain about X. songs in the go or Y. Songs. @@Key-Knight87
      It's also a case of. Have a group of people enjoy X songs from 2009 till now. It's a slap to the face. Biome specific songs are a bad idea in my opinion as if you are a builder this makes it irritating while if you are an adventurer this works. The best approach is enable vs. disable per album and songs. As minecraft to the core is a Sandbox.

      Fully agree. I think Minecraft has just been around for long enough that people are beginning to get blinded by nostalgia. I adore Lena Raine's additions to the OST. I also feel like a little kid again every time I hear songs like Wet Hands and Subwoofer Lullaby.
      I think part of the charm of Minecraft is the childhood nostalgia mixed with new things to explore and blocks to build with every time I come back to it.
      If I want it to feel just like how it did when I was a kid, nobody is stopping me from selecting 1.7 from the launcher.
      Microsoft isn't always going to make the best choices for Minecraft, but I really dont think that allowing musicians other than C418 to contribute to the soundtrack is *destroying* the game. It's just...different. The reasons are dumb, but change in itself is not bad.

      It's the annoying thing of live service games: everything has to continuously be updated, instead of just allowing people to easily experience the game as-is. If they had put a nostalgia switch in the menu to only keep the music to ambient (keeping the new music in music disks, but the main themes old), it'd be a different story in my opinion.

    • @LilChuunosuke
      @LilChuunosuke 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @nanderv the problem with the nostalgia switch is that everyone is nostalgic for a different era. Some are for alpha, for me it's 1.9.1. I still remember people complaining that horses felt too much like a mod, but the first time i ever played on PC was literal days before they were added, so I'm not really nostalgic for a minecraft without them.
      And they sorta *do* have one in the sense that you can quite literally go into the launcher and play any version of Minecraft you want. You can pick which version is your favorite and play that forever.

    When i was making music for Create: Astral, i tried my best to give it a simple feel that could allow the tracks to be background tracks rather than the main focus. I had simple, repeating melodies, and even full-on ambient pieces. Our players loved the soundtrack. Now, i started making music for another minecraft modpack, and truth be told, it's just not the same. There've been times where i've sent like 5 tracks in a row only for the developer to tell me it's "not catchy enough" or "too simple". Kinda paints the picture here i feel like. Also, only 4k subs? @@BarnesReal I’ve been playing Minecraft since beta 1.5 and I like the songs the new artists have made and of course the original. When a new song is made and is for a music disk I expect something different and fortunately not jarring.
      When new music is coming I mostly worry about the ambient music that plays in the background where the music is there but not the focus of what’s going on what I personally about is with all the recent updates being about adventure/exploration that future music will no longer be calm ambient music and more grand think Breath of the Wild for an example.
      That’s what concerns me the most change is good especially to keep the game going but I hope we don’t lose the ambient music entirely and we’re left with something that sounds like a different game’s OST was just slapped onto Minecraft or music that’s from the uncanny valley so close but something is just off.

    I love C418’s music, it shaped my childhood and is very important to me, but I think it’s unfair to compare Lena Raine (or any of the other composers) to him. They’re entirely seperate people with unique styles and personalities, so of course it’s gonna be different. I don’t think they “tried and failed” to replicate him, they just injected their own styles into the soundtrack, which provides a larger scope of emotion to the game. Besides, Minecraft is all about creating whatever you want, so it’s okay for the music to be diverse. That’s my opinion, anyway ❤

    • @rheokalyke367

      Lena Raine didn't try to replicate C418 at all. Honestly, just listen to the Celeste OST, specifically "Quiet and Falling".
      You'll immediately notice that they fit very well with Lena's Nether tracks almost interchangably. You could easily slot the nether Nether Tracks into Celeste and Celeste tracks into the nether and it wouldn't feel out of place. Which IMO shows just how good of a composer Lena is, being able to make good music in her own identity.

    • @Wallis_2001

      @@rheokalyke367 Yup, couldn’t agree more. And that’s why I think the expectation that the community put on Lena to replace C418 was very unrealistic. I mean, she technically took his place as the main composer, but people were acting like they wanted her to emulate his style or something, which wouldn’t have worked and probably would’ve been weird. I’m totally okay with people disliking her songs in the Minecraft soundtrack, it’s just this particular critique of her music that feels misguided to me.

  • @noctonistis
    @noctonistis 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

    There's a lot of incorrect or incorrectly presented information in this video which paints a very inaccurate picture of the topic. First of all, the statement that C418 composed music for specific biomes is simply incorrect. In reality, C418's music tracks play regardless of biome, while the more recent tracks by Lena Raine, Aaron Cherof, and Kumi Tanioka play mostly in specific biomes. Second, there has to be a clear distinction made between music discs and ambient soundtracks. It's perfectly fine to not like the newer ambient tracks, but the ones you mentioned in the video, Pigstep, otherside, and 5, are ALL MUSIC DISCS, not ambient tracks. Music discs have always been distinct from the feel of the ambient tracks, with discs like Stal or Mellohi (made by C418) being very different from the usual Minecraft feel. The disc 5 specifically is actually a spiritual successor to 11 and 13 (also by C418), not something very new and unique (11 and 13 are also "lore" discs). It would have been very good if you actually talked about the ambient music by the newer composers instead of just the discs. Third, and I know this is a petty argument, but OBVIOUSLY the minigame/battle modes would not use ambient soundtracks, to even suggest that they should is ridiculous. When a game mode is focused on high action gameplay, the music should reflect that. Same thing actually goes for Story Mode, of course those tracks would emphasize emotion more heavily, it's a STORY MODE after all, not an ambient mode. Finally, I'd like to note that C418's music still plays in the game, none of his work was erased or replaced. Overall, while I do agree with most of the core points from the video, some of these misrepresentations can be really harmful for the new composers, as some very toxic comments have already shown.

    this whole “c418 vs. new composers” thing is absolutely insane. c418 is a brilliant composer who helped shape minecraft and its legacy, but composers get swapped all the time. volumes alpha and beta are some brilliant and nostalgic albums-and i really want that third album-but lena raine and aaron cherof made some of my favorite tracks in the game that have taken my breath away. it’s a little different, sure, but some people just refuse to take anything that’s not the same thing they’ve had for a decade.
    things change. games change, music changes. and if you don’t roll with the punches, you’ll never be able to see the good in that

    I really love the songs from the new artists, "firebugs" being one of my favorites. But C418 has an irreplaceable style, his ambient music filled my childhood and shaped the type of music I make and listen to today. I prefer his music over the modern stuff because it simultaneously has the ability to slip into the background while you're playing or gaming, but then consume you once you take a step away to see your finished build, to look over the landscape, to fill the silence... it is beautiful. Somehow it is beautiful, melancholic, cheerful, and every emotion in between all at once. Somehow despite not being overwhelmingly complex, it reaches into your heart and pulls at a string of emotions that are more complex than the simple melody itself.

    While I cant say that I'm nostalgic for the old music as I have only been playing for about 6 years (I'm fairly young), I will say that the new tracks hit differently to the traditional C418 ones. They are frankly just louder and more intense. All in all, I love the new music, but wish that the themes and feel of the old music was still prevalent. It just isn't.

    It's a pretty reasonable move on Microsoft's end, and I would hardly call it greed. As stated in the video, C418 licensing his music to Mojang while keeping the rights to it himself was far from the norm in game development, but it worked in the short term when Mojang was a small indie studio. It led to the rather awkward situation where each new soundtrack added had a different licenses that Mojang and content creators had to deal with, and meant that Mojang could not market Minecraft's music independently of C418 for stuff like merchandise, which makes up the bulk of Minecraft's revenue today. It also meant that C418's style of music became more synonymous with Minecraft, making the inevitable switch to a different artist when C418 couldn't keep up with the demand for more music jarring, an issue that C418 admits himself was an issue. Especially with Microsoft trying to expand the Minecraft IP with things like Minecraft Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons, ect, the scope of Minecraft was becoming way too much for one artist to keep up with, and even if C418 had been kept on additional composers would have had to be brought on to assist. Microsoft tried to come to an agreement to purchase the rights for his music going forward as is the norm in the video game music industry, but unfortunately they couldn't come to one. Nevertheless, if Microsoft wanted to completely snub him from Minecraft in order to make sure the soundtrack was only music they had the rights to, they could have very easily replaced all of his music in the game, but they didn't. The game still promotes him as an artist and promotes his music to its hundreds of millions of players, making C418 a widely recognized artist and allowing him to market the bulk of the soundtrack for the most sold game independently of Microsoft. It's a shame his third album will likely not be included in the game, but as mentioned in the video the terms that he worked under for Mojang were an abnormal mistake, and now as Minecraft has grown Microsoft is not keen on continuing it, but have been absolutely willing to negotiate a more normal contract with C418 to continue working with him

      @@chanceh1920 Well, lets not get too ahead of ourselves. The terms for the first 2 albums was amazing to C418 and kinda bad for Mojang. a rewrite of the terms was due but I'm 100% sure Microsoft leveraged that a little too much and lost C418 in the process. Licensing artist music is basically just an indi studio thing (unless its something like a pop song) and Mojang is far from indi at this point

    This was a well made video but I can’t give it a like because(in my opinion) it wasn’t made responsibly, I’m not a c418 hater I love his music nor do I prefer the new stuff but even with me agreeing with the points made it doesn’t feel like this is a subjective opinion nor a educated fact, it more feels like a opinion written as fact. Don’t get me wrong I’m fine with opinion pieces but statements like “It was too different” or “Mojang is killing Minecraft” or “The change to the soundtrack would be hated by a large amount of the community” is a tad irresponsible. Like, Pigstep Stands next to Stal as the most loved Minecraft disks nor is the change in style a appalling stand out, most of the disks stand out from the other music, if you don’t like it that’s fine but the opinion isn’t gospel. Also Mojang isn’t a greedy company for wanting music license, I still think they’re still kinda greedy but wanting music license is important for a brands growth if they had to ask C418 every time they wanted to use his music or sell it, it would hurt the brand, it sucks, I wouldn’t do it, but it’s not greedy. My opinion is that the new ambient pieces lack the same power as C418’s but I prefer the new music discs and that’s just my opinion, so is your’s and that’s fine, but pushing it this much in a community made primarily out of kids isn’t responsible. But, that’s just me.

      It is true that pigstep is good, but I fundamentally disagree with your statement on music rights. Microsoft and its executives are not doing anything for minecraft's soundtrack, they don't put the work in. I know it's fairly typical for the company to own the music, but it's not fair. And your argument on "asking C418 every time" really doesn't work since that is not how it works with his existing soundtracks either. Mojang was always able to freely use it in the game and its promotion, the point here is that he wants to get paid for the revenue that is generated with his music and have it in his hand to pass it on to third parties instead of working for a wage, which is an entirely reasonable demand. We see that the old deal worked, it would just reduce the power of the company over the music and not expand its capital, which Microsoft didn't want.

    Amazing video!
    I agree with many of the points you made, especially the point about the music going from ambient to storytelling.
    I took a ~5-year break from Minecraft and when I played again it was actually Modded Minecraft so when I started to hear new music tracks that stood out negatively I assumed they were from a mod but instead, it was new music that had been added to the game since I last played.
    Songs like "Pigstep" and "Otherside," which I guess many new players love, sound very unfitting to me and made me turn off the music multiple times.
    Don't get me wrong, many of the other tracks by Lena Raine and the other artists are actually great; it's just those two that always stand out negatively to me.
