Thank you so much, this was a $15.00 fix after trouble shooting hot water heater . Easy to follow instructions saved me a service call to the campground.
Thank you! Problem: Gas ignites but shuts off after about 40 seconds. It worked fine just 2 weeks ago. I had already replaced the igniter, but that didn't help. Because of your video I learned about the ECO and thermostat connections. I reasoned that it might shut off if it thought the water was already hot enough. I unplugged the connectors going to the ECO and T-Stat units and reconnected them and it fixed my problem! I'm guessing there was some corrosion on the connectors.
Thank you!!! I was able to fix my hotwater heater myself. Being a single mother I can't afford to pay anyone to make repairs. I've learned so much from TH-cam. I'm TH-cam certified electrician lol
Thank you for making this video. I've read several troubleshooting sheets, but without the visual aid to locate what is being referenced, things are not so simple. You saved the day!
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I already knew the problem, just wanted to know how to install thermostat and ECO. Perfect video. Thanks Bugsmacker.
FYI! The brown wire with the thermal fuse was put back on wrong! The thermal fuse is supposed to be bent so it is over the burn chamber. You have it backwards. It's a safety feature incase flames come out of the burn chamber and produce too much heat, it will melt the thermal fuse and kill power.
Excellent. So glad I found this video. I just broke off the tab on the eco while cleaning it (pilot light not lighting at wall switch but heater works on electric). I thought I was going to have to take the entire front off to get the Eco out. Thanks for posting this. Brian
I'll try not to be long winded, but THANK YOU! Finally, a video that actually explains and shows how to do something and how it works. Very thorough and beneficial.
Very informative over all, but wonder is there a way to tell which is ECO and which is Thermostat as they came loose in my kit. I'm assuming that the ECO is the 180F and the Thermostat is the 140F cut off. I also noted that my brown wires on the Thermostat were backwards to the orientation you showed. I assume that it makes no difference since there seems to be no set orientation for either sensor. Am I assuming correctly?
Thank you for the video. I replaced both the thermostats and the cutoff fuse. The water is now HOLY CR@P hot!. I did notice that I have no visible light on my particular model. I don't see anything on mine that looked like your light. Mine is a 2015 unit so maybe they saved money by getting rid of the 30 cent light. Thank you again from SW Florida.
I left the electric switch on on my 17 Thor Challenger 37TB with a Atwood water heater. Works on gas, not on electric, i am thinking the element burned out. What do you think, whrre should i start troubleshooting

So if they go back could it make it stay one as well? Mine is just lit and stays on, I have a falt light on my panel in side the camper . It gets so hot that the blow off starts to leak. So I just been leaving it off.

Mine heats up really hot then lights up the problem light on the inside and doesn't heat after that so I'm going to replace the thermostat tomorrow. Thanks
I'm running mine on electricity. The water heater works fine but after getting up to temperature it'll shut off and the light on the switch comes on (lockout condition?) Thanks Bug Smacker! My Atwood RV water heater used to work on Electric and gas and now only works on gas. Do you know why? It is 12 years old and now the gas comes on and lites, but in 2 seconds goes out, lites again and goes out again, and then the red light comes on. I checked the ECO T'Stat and the flat lug on left switch ) broke off in the plastic connector (2 red wires). So I soldered it back on to the terminal of the switch and that worked. But when gas lites it still goes out. Another camper told me that I should blow out the soot from the burner. How do I do that? I used can of compressed air and blew down the gas tube and the heater began to work, but it has trouble each time it tries to start. Can you give me some advice? Also, why is not working on electric?
