- It has become a tradition here at the Sacramento History Museum to send out holiday cards to our donors and supporters of our institution. These holiday cards (300 this year) were printed using one of our printing presses we have on display in our print shop exhibit, the 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press that was manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio in 1902.
While many visitors, especially school children who have visited during a school program, may have seen how this press operates, not many people get to see all the steps involved in the printing process.
In this video, Howard demonstrates inking the press and operating the press recorded from different camera angles. This video was filmed in segments as Howard printed the front and back cover of the card using a Pantone PMS 7533c rubber base ink. The front of the card includes a image depicting the first printing press in what would later become the United States, which was Stephen Daye’s wooden common press from 1639. The text reads, “Thank you for leaving a good impression on us.” This was set in 36 point Cheltenham Bold font. The back of the card is a photo engraving of our museum’s monogram and the text, “Printed at the Sacramento History Museum” in 18 point Bodoni font.

I’m in a generation that can barely wait for a video to load. Much respect for this craft
Hey Mr.. Howard!!How cool😊I live minutes away from this museum ❤
This is therapeutic.
Offset Printing Pressman here for 30+years. Used to run letterpress for foil stamping, die cutting and crash numbering. He didn't show you all the make-ready he had to do to get to that point. Those presses were a true art even down to making the dies for them. I enjoyed the video, neat stuff to still see!
Was a pressman letterpress handset cold type emboss die cut etc ahh the good ol days
The video brings back memories of my first job at age 14 in 1956 as a "printers devil". I spent many after--school hours doing business cards, return addresses on envelopes etc. Great video!
Ran a smaller one in HS from '74-'78.
It had just been donated by Presbyterian Church & I was first tasked with sorting the various typefaces.
Hot Tip: My stationary left leg got way more sore than the operating right leg. Quickly. And I was fit.
Only Student or Teacher who could be arsed to use it, but "extra" copies served me well, and barter I did with 4 lockers. I ran that School. Heh-heh-heh.
Funniest day was last School Paper of Senior year. I printed 2 dozen with "Kevin H____ Sucks" just below banner.
Had them specifically delivered to Art Class in 7th Period. About 45 seconds later, Kevin came storming in Ready To Kill.
Showed him the rest of the unsullied copies & lived to tell about it.
That brings back memories! I'm awfully glad ours was motor driven. We had plenty enough to worry about feeding them.
Ok, ok… you impressed me😊❤
Merry Christmas Howard, and everyone else at your wonderful museum ✨️
You definitely get your total body workout with this bad boy.
It sounds so peaceful.
Thank you for your dedication Howard! Subbed!
Merry Christmas, Howard! I love the card design. ❤
Such a soothing sound
Beautyfull machine!
This is very fun
😊😊congratulations... is very gooooooooood. 😊
Great video again guys, these are such enjoyable videos to watch!
Storia, splendida storia!
Brings back memories! I worked on a letterpress similar to this (it was electric driven thankfully!) 30 years ago. Off to see if you have any videos of a Ludlow. Thanks for sharing and Happy holidays!
Nice to see. I used to be a plate maker, zinc copper lead, line, halftone, 4 colour
I am a journeyman pressman 'retired' and ran letter presses: Kluge, Kelly B, Miller, Heidelberg windmill, and Meihle vertical. I did lock up and some type setting. I ran many offset presses as well.
Impressive. I had not idea of this.
Merry Christmas yall, i just love watchin Howard do prints its really relaxing and satisfying, Howard powered 💪🖨️📄
This would be so cool to use, but even a hand press is out if my price range for now.
The tacky sound of the ink is always great to hear.
I love having to wait to see if this one is going to be litty or naw. We're just used to instant information anymore.
That big round plate looked like it was beaten out in a forge with a ball peen hammer. I could see the ink adhere to the slight hollows. I love that machine!
That ink disk was smooth as glass. It takes that pattern when the ink begins to spread.
Soo relaxing and brain cleaning ❤❤
Soothing in an ASMR kinda way
So satisfying merry christmas
Hi
Great exercise 💪🏻💪🏻
I’m here for the nostalgia…and the squeaky floorboards. 😅
Nice ASMR ❤
The old Klugie!
Do you feel like you have to wear ear plugs sometimes ?
Heidelberg
😃😃😃
Is it heavy to push, Howard? Because it looks like very very heavy to push
For certain people, this process is called The Art of Printing.
But for me... This is called The Art of Time Wasting.
Isn't the audio out of sync a bit?
Now this machine would be an OSHA violation. Assuming you could find an engineer and millwright and operator smart enough to run it.
Looks like you're operating a train
This looks insanely overengineered
It was handmade and incredibly expensive to have made. The person purchasing that would’ve also gotten a book that gave every part, every single detail of the machine so it could be maintained and work forever. It’s not over engineered, it’s engineered to last forever. Clearly it has.
Cyan Low! Cannot print! Ye Olde HP.
Useless technology
useless comment
Danny boy, you should Keep Yourself Safe. 😊

That wasn’t a very nice comment, please can we respect all forms of technology whether old or new, all or useful or they wouldn’t exist
@@MarioPL989 please let’s not respond harshly but just show him nicely the error of his comment
