How To Make A Cliché

Ever wonder how copies of cuts are made? In this video, Howard discusses how clichés, also known as electrotypes, are made. The process Howard describes applies for not just halftones but also woodcuts.
We have two excellent examples in our print shop exhibit to discuss this topic! The halftone image is of the first 25 U.S. presidents.

The copper cliche looks more saturated in that the black portions are so pronounced it looks kinda smudged whereas the original halftone looks more crisp.

I recently acquired a few hundred of these old blocks and could not figure out if they are printable. I don’t have the equipment and my test was an abysmal failure but I may try again when I get a diy tabletop press.
