      its a big conglomerate. ofc blizzard had their hands in.
      1 week before major content patch/addon they review the game, yeah nice timing uh i mean coincident.
      let alon they give POE mediocre ratings, which is a bad joke. poe is the undisputed king on the arpg landscape, and it has very very very deep mechanics and interactions.
      people can say what they want, this was psyops from blizzard.

      Saying that the games combat is "underwhelming" is hilarious. The sheer amount of impact and customization you have over your character is crazy. I can't help but think that they just played through the game once without thinking too much about linking and optimizing and just left it at that (And they most likely only played with a single character with the simplest build you can find).

    Long time Diablo player, love those games. But after years of playing it I got bored with it. Decided to give PoE a try. As a new PoE player I have NEVER felt as lost in a game as this one. There are so many skills, systems, and whatever that I felt like I was on a tiny raft in a ocean of the unknown. Watched videos/guides and such just to get some sort of lifeline to this game. If I was to compare the two games, Diablo is tic tac toe, and PoE is 3d Chess. Diablo holds your hand, PoE gives you a rusty sword and says go kill that dragon good luck.
    If this feels like I am hatein on PoE I'm not. I absolutely love this game! So many things to learn and figure out that when I succeed I feel rewarded that I got over that hill. Something I haven't felt since Dark Souls.
    Not to say PoE doesn't have faults it does. But overall I plan on playing PoE for a long time yet. GG GGG

      That's why I enjoyed the game so much. I love having the ability to manipulate so many mechanics. At the beginning, it was alot, but I saw all this gear, and equipped it, and watched my character have different stats. I wanted to push the boundaries of my character with specific defenses/skills.
      That's why I play PoE.

      The problem is (please leave the fanatism aside for a second) : a game is not a better game just because is more complex, Diablo 3 doesn't respect your intelligence but POE doesn't respect your time, even the tutorial says that you should have selected what you are gonna do with your character in game before starting the adventure, are you fucking kidding me? How Im suposse to do that if Ive never played the game before, even I have played all the Diablo saga tons of hours and Torchlight and I felt UFFF the first time I played POE I can't imagine a complete new player of the genre.

      @ivanlagrossemoule 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      You don't even need to be that good, just know the mechanics and use up some of the regret orbs to fix your mistakes. I have a level 93 Marauder in this league where I decided to go with a random melee skill and pure fire damage. I ended up with an ice crash marauder with full fire conversion and while things could be improved for sure, I still do tier 10 maps with ease. I never followed a guide or whatever, I just did some trial and error.
      I could spend days criticizing the game for many reasons, but if you're going to criticize something at least use legitimate arguments.

Anyone that comes in to break a game down and explains how it took them 2-3 times longer than the average player to finish it has totally invalidated their own opinion. just watch some of his gameplay, it takes him like a full minute to take down a rare monster. and like 20 seconds for a group of mobs.
      Also that he does not understand that his "class" doesnt matter beside his starting point on the skill tree and the node types surrounding it already speaks volumes. Complaining that he has to have the right gear to stay alive. Yeah, well, but he does realize that RPGs and aRPGs usually revolve around gearing, right? No mentioning about crafting and loot. For someone who played 85 hours, he maybe should have watched a few guides to begin with. There are so many out there that help you get on track and give you a glimpse at how an experienced player plays the game.

      I don't know how the beginner experience has changed but over a year ago when I started everyone I knew told me that in PoE your first couple of characters will be a failure and won't make it to endgame and that held true for me.
      I had to reroll twice before I had a character that managed to get through all difficulties and then I still got stuck on low tier maps.
      And I had extensive experience with other ARPGs, it's just that there is so much to learn in PoE and it does so many things differently.
      However that doesn't excuse that this reviewer basically stopped reviewing the game while being fully aware that the game offers a lot and the reason for their failure was because they didn't grasp the complexity of the game.
      I knew fully well that my first characters weren't performing well because I built them incorrectly and didn't understand the games mechanics so I continued trying until I figured stuff out. PoE makes it very clear that when you are failing, it's because of a lack of knowledge on your part - This reviewer blamed it all on the game anyways.

I must say, path of exile has to be one of the best games I've ever played. The amount of depth and unique features this game has is off the charts. Heck, even trading in this game is fun and not linear at all. In WoW (another game I play frequently) you just use gold to trade for items, and most of the items on the market aren't worth anything because of raiding and dungeons. Yet in this game you use multiple different currencies which are more than just money or gold, they're actual things you use to craft in the game! I really love that aspect of the game.

    • @lolersthe4th880

      Not to defend IGN at all, but it's actually just a bigger problem with review culture. Not to get into the whole business side of it, but rather there are these life style games that just can't be reviewed by any regular means. Warframe leaves a pretty raw impression at the start: Granted the combat is excellent, progression is slow, crafting takes days, prime frames seem like an eternity away etc. But of course, it gets better and more rewarding the more time you sink. However, game reviewers simply aren't afforded that luxury.
      Just to reiterate, I'm in no way crusading for IGN, I personally find their reviews to be pretty off the mark most times. However, I think there's just a bigger discussion to have with the nature of having to review dozens upon dozens of games accurately, when most gamers might not even purchase or play 5 games in a year. Time is a critical factor. Some games shine with more time given, and others dull (warframe vs Destiny2).
      I personally find reviews to be a very technical craft. Sure some games are very short experiences that can be accurately assessed after a playthrough or 2, but many games releasing in the contemporary space are real time sinks. I think in that sense, the idea of the review embargoes and rushing reviews out the door to meet demand is counter productive to the shift in the market. They often misrepresent experiences and it's to the detriment of not only gamers and themselves, but game developers who need to appease companies.
      The tl;dr: Game review channels really need to reassess their models to catch up to evolution of the gaming landscape.

      If someone sticks with a game for a long time, the chances are they really enjoy it, otherwise they had stopped much earlier and simply played something else.
      So a rating should reflect exactly that. Played for X hours, "early impression". A long term impression is something different and a normal tester can never provide that as it means you have to play it for multiple of hundreds of hours and pretty much stick to a game for weeks and months.
      A good way to reflect a rating might be to have a rating for like "the first 10 hours" , then "30 hours" and a long term one that really requires the opinions of people that actually stick to the game for that long. That would result in a much better and realistic review, especially as a lot of games cannot even provide 30 hours of entertainment at all, and for others its like a 10 hour campaign and then its only multiplayer after that.

      If a game can output you 100hours atleast, specially when it's free to play, it has high value...
      if a single player game provides you with 100 hours of gameplay and costs you 30 ... it means your getting entertainment for 30 cents / h... compare the price of a movie ticket for example..
      atleast that's how i evalute games objectively
      but the games i truely love.. to me they are "Priceless" anyways...
      for example ive played dota2 for like almost 10k hours clocked on steam... sure ive bought most of the compendiums etc.. considering how many hours i've played.. i feel like ripping off gaben lol : ))) godlike value and replayability (wich PoE also has, not many games these days have that... )

      I think you've got a point about the amount of time required for a deep dive review on PoE - There's no reason why an IGN reviewer can't take their time with this game. It's been out for years already. This isn't a day-1 launch review for some anticipated title where IGN needs to have their review out to compete with other online reviewers. It's bizarre to rush out a review on a game as deep as PoE; you may as well not do the review at all.

      That Diablo 3 review was written by a completely different person though. I don't know if IGN have some background boardroom that predetermines what the scores are going to be, but until we know for a fact that that's true we need to keep in mind that there are multiple people that comprise IGN's reviewers and each one has their own opinions that don't necessarily mesh with each other.

    "no game ever deserves a 10" is an opinion I never understood.
    10 shouldn't be considered "perfect". 10 should be, at least in my opinion, given to those titles that raise the bar of excellence/expectations even despite their flaws.
    When a game is of such quality that, suddenly, it becomes a point of reference for other games.. Then yeah, It may deserve a 10;
    "this is the peak at this point in time. You want a 10? Innovate and improve on it"
    How often? Very sporadically.. And when I say sporadically I don't even mean "once a year" or so.
    In my head I can think about no more than 4 or 5 games that may could be considered for it.
    Dark Souls 1 may be a good example.. Or Baldur's gate 2. Do they have flaws? Yyyep... Definitely...
    Yet there is a reason if the entire industry was shaped so much by them

    You can't expect a new player to just know where to go and what to do, they will just spend way too much time just looking at gear to understand it, waste time on the league mechanic, looting without a filter, exploring maps to reveal 100% of the map just in case there is a secret and all kinds of stuff like that

      Also an amazing thing about PoE's endgame is that it's not only grinding levels and gear blindly there are real challenges to be found. I have around 1200 hours in the game and the only "endgame" boss i have defeated is atziri which is one the weaker ones. There is even a real questline which makes the endgame have its own lore which is awesome, so i really recomend playing again.

    • @mitch_tmv
      @mitch_tmv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd recommend giving it another shot. I personally don't grind end game content that much, in 800+ hours I've never even hit level 90 because I go play new builds instead. ahh the "hardcore" gamers rhetoric. How dare anyone make/play a game that isnt for people who want to devote their lives to a single game for months at a time. damn "casuals" (99% of actual gamers lol, people that pick up madden for 20 minutes a day are not gamers so calling them casual gamers is redundant) ruining the "true" gaming experience. This rhetoric is toxic to gaming as a whole and utterly pointless. Some of the most "casual focused" cod for example, have the most dedicated, decorated, and rewarding competitive scenes in gaming where people who actually dedicate their time to getting good at a game make money off of it. i doubt poe will ever have a million dollar prize pool with dozens of teams competing at a high skill level for the prize. Id rather call a gamer with a collection of 50 games that they play and dedicate their time mastering a "hardcore" (XD such a sad title) gamer than a person that plays dark souls, poe, and bloodborne exclusively for months at a time because git gud.

    • @HenryFunnell
      @HenryFunnell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MoistFishTacos You sir, have very much missed the point, I agree the term "hardcore gamer" is poor and carries many connotations but nevertheless he's not wrong.
      The game is not played by people that play multiple different titles in an evening, if you play PoE it's unlikely you're currently playing anything else. I don't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer but PoE is a game that requires a certain amount of commitment (as does getting good at CoD or any other competitive game especially to the level you're discussing).
      *Side note* I'd love to see PoE racing blow up competitively, it's very fun to watch as players push to go faster and faster meaning they start to make mistakes and die and as content gets harder you see their numbers dwindle and can focus more on individuals.
      Like the original poster I have a large amount of time in the game (550+ hours), but many people would consider that amount of time to be insufficient to learn and progress enough each league (limited time expansion) it's a game that for about 1-2 months takes up most, if not all, of peoples gaming time most then take a 1 month break playing other things (steamcharts.com/app/238960 shows this very clearly).
      As I said I agree with you that there is a toxicity in seeing gaming as casual OR hardcore but PoE falls into a heavy commitment category and someone with no prior knowledge of the game shouldn't be doing a review of the whole thing. If you're new to the game then review the early game so you can tell newer players what to expect, if you're a reviewer that has reviewed the game in the past maybe you should play it further and then you'll be able to review the rest of the content without it being disregarded. :)

    • @clonerstive

      It's not strictly for hard core gamers. Casual gamong is perfect for this game. Put in a couple hours a session and you feep like you got something done, or at least progressed to something you're working toward. No need to exclude other people from the audience of the game. Anyone can roll up a character for some grinding good times. And PoE does this without pandering because the core game play is so satisfying.

    I gotta disagree a little, a person doesn't have to be good at games to be a good reviewer. Remember, not everyone is good at games, and the opinion of someone who isn't very good at games is valuable to them. I would never recommend POE to most people, it's a punishing game that's as as deep as it is unapproachable. It took me more than 150 hours before I started feeling comfortable with the game, and I still suck even after 350 hours. POE was my first ARPG, and I loved it... But i hated my first 100 hours with this game.
    If not for a friend who played with me at the start, I'd have dropped it after a few hours.... I only learned most of the mechanics because that friend spoon-fed them to me. After three failed attempts at getting into the game, it finally stuck with my third attempt where I got to the see a little of what the endgame looked like. I love POE and I will champion it as one of the best games of my generation, but it's not a game I would recommend lightly.

    The 10 acts of story mode are just telling a story through tutorials on boss fights. The real game, like you said, is the endgame where you'd be crying for a tutorial mode after getting stomped by dozens of bosses you otherwise would have no idea how to fight. But don't get me wrong, I think the story is interesting and would love some kind of webcomic telling Atziri's story and the rise and fall of Vaal. That would be sick.
    For new players, you gotta be ready for the skill curve. See the passive tree, don't panic, look at a few build guides to see how the tree is used and you'll come to appreciate it for what it is: complicated and takes a lot of failure to get good at, but rewarding with layers of creativity to take advantage of and really make your builds your own. It's the only game I've played that truly makes me feel "you can literally just do anything". Also, accept that you'll die a lot. The game is designed to not let any build just roll over everything. Embrace those two facets of PoE, and you'll have a great time.

    The worst part about Path of Exile is it's technical state. The loading take minutes, assets take a while to appear and you still get random lag spikes or kicked out of the instance for no reason. Sometimes you're lucky and you get an uninterrupted 4 hour game session. Other times, you take 3 times to log in, Oriath loads for 3 minutes and then the game kicks you out of the server after 10 minutes of gameplay. It's a shame because otherwise, the game is technically well made. The graphics look great and the game has very stable and optimized FPS, especially thanks to dynamic resolution which is a blessing unfortunately rarely seen in other PC games.

I've gotten to him and can clear the mobs around him quite easily, but taking down Kitava is almost impossible without deciding to just "die 100 times to get it done" cause that isn't rewarding for me. I'm not one to defend IGN but the mere fact that this individual reviewer put in 75+ hours for a review shows dedication for his or her craft. I love these games. Diablo I and Diablo II were some of the first games I ever played and I love path of exile but.. i wouldnt be so quick to shit on the reviewer for being slow. As a new player my main complaint is that fights are far to graphically cluttered. I've built a pretty tanky character, but I still feel like a glass cannon whenever I go delving. I get one shot out of the blue pretty frequently. Mobs can either beat on me for a prolonged period without shifting my health much, or I get squished in a moment. I thought maybe it was my negative chaos resists, and so worked on improving that. But even with all resists greater than 30% one shots happen pretty often, even on delves where my character is 15 levels higher than the mobs.

    I don't think the review is wrong.
    He's not reviewing the game for the fans, he's trying to review it for the average person.
    And PoE is a very niche game that can vary from 10/10 for a D2 fan, to a 4/10 for a new ARPG fan.
    A score of 7.6 is very fair, it's a good game, and that's a good score. Remember, these reviews are for everyone, and if they tell average gamers that PoE (a hardcore ARPG niche game) is a 9/10, then those gamers will lose trust in IGN because it's a niche game.
    Your score is purely emotional and panders to a specific ARPG niche audience. It's too subjective.

    • @DuoMaxwellDS
      @DuoMaxwellDS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But then you are implying newbie players can't have the mind to delve deeper into this game so they should trust IGN? If anything that would make people lose trust in IGN more when they found out the game is much more than what he wrote in the article, because the inability of the author to actually does his research.
      Being a niche game has nothing to do with the score. It can be niche and it can still get 10/10. Reviewer should know they are reviewing the game for what it is, not to please the readers who don't bother to do their research.

    • @MrFlupsik

      No 9.5 is a bit too much i think. Atleast not for new ARPG gamer. For someone who is experienced then 9.5 is just right.
      If you are average person, just trying PoE, youll either get sucked in or quit in act 2.
      This YT vid, is a bit emotional but mostly right anyways. This is not a simple Diablo 3. The review doesnt do the game justice.

  • @therealbahamut
    @therealbahamut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    On the one hand, yeah, it's a little unfair to leave out what they did and to time it when they did. I'll grant that. Missing some of the things that make the game shine definitely lowers the value of a review considerably. Maybe he would've progressed faster with a better build...but on some levels, that actually IS a downside of the game. If there are only a few "right ways" to play and countless "wrong" ones, that does speak something to the design of the game.
    On the other hand, they did play it for EIGHTY HOURS. Do you know how many games are not only done, but 100% complete in even HALF that many hours? That's two entire workweeks for a full time waged employee. Most reviews probably don't even receive half that time before being written. Let's not underplay that just because a dedicated player might consider it "casual" or "introductory." Calling the entire single player story is "a tutorial" honestly just feels...kind of elitist.
    I kind of like path of exile's approach to character growth and builds, but no matter how long the game goes on, one must acknowledge that at the end of the day it IS still just another isometric roomsweeper. It may be one of the more divergent diablo clones out there and it may be standing the test of time in doing so, even earning respect as a F2P title that resists P2W choices, but it is what is.

    • @kokofaser
      @kokofaser 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so you want a handholding game where you can do nothing "wrong" and just beat the game without issues no matter how little you interact with the game and its mechanics to optmize your way of playing? should try diablo 3. youll love that game
      there is an endless list of builds. ive played 3-4 builds into endgame every league only played 1 or 2 builds twice ever and after 4 years of poe and 2000+ hours of playing i still have about 30 builds that i know about that i would like to try this league because i havent come around to do so yet. all of those are amazing builds that faceroll any content up to and including shaper. your point is lost on me.
      the key point is that there is a ton of builds that dont work before you have some key uniques. but even for leveling builds that transition into the vast diversity that is endgame builds there is a BUNCH of possiblities.
      TL DR poe is no handholding game if you want to be efficent do your homework first.

    • @therealbahamut
      @therealbahamut 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple key points:
      -Diablo 3 bored me to tears. I played a hardcore crusader, turned up the difficulty to "expert" (expert my ass) and my health globe didn't sink below 90% until act 5. I didn't even finish the campaign because it put me to sleep so hard.
      -I actually PLAY PoE right now with a few friends. We've made a guild and have a few stash tabs and are having fun losing hardcore characters to bosses we haven't seen before.
      -You're defending something that isn't under attack here. Acknowledging a game's weak points isn't the same as calling it a bad game or saying anything about it's players.
      -Once again (because apparently this didn't sink in:) EIGHTY HOURS IS TWO FULL WEEKS OF WORK FOR A FULL TIME EMPLOYEE. That part is more important than one might think here because it's very easy to lose perspective on time when you're accustomed to multi-thousand hour grinds. Again, I'm not attacking, just pointing out facts.
      No matter how much one might love the game, there is a physical hard cap on how many hours one person can devote to it and that limit is different for everyone. It's one thing to say a game can't be fully explored, mastered and completed in any reasonable time frame like that, but if it takes less time to finish your average Final Fantasy than it does to START enjoying a game, one honestly has to question whether the "endgame" is overvalued as opposed to the parts of the game everyone will have time to actually experience. Doubly so when you consider that most reviewers wouldn't even give half that time to a game before providing their critiques. Frankly, eighty hours seems extremely generous for a review. There are games out there that I've completely skipped because of a four minute gameplay trailer showing me a checklist of things I no longer want to see in a game. Those games will now never get any money from me, much less anything resembling a review. Doesn't that sound like a missed opportunity on their part?
      God of War (the first one, not "Dad of Boy") taught us a very important lesson in game design: You have to grab your players' interest NOW, not twenty hours in. How many parts of GoW fell flat but we kept playing because starting the first level impaling an honest-to-Zeus HYDRA was so F*%&ing awesome? The HOOK matters and it's one of PoE's weakest points in terms of design. The emphasis on "endgame" may be what the hardcore audience is concerned about, but it's not going to keep grabbing new audiences forever. Diablo Immortal may have disgusted a bunch of people into moving to PoE, but...if your biggest audience only comes to you because their favorite franchise has betrayed them then they'll only be your audience until said franchise gets its shit together.

    • @OSYofRR
      @OSYofRR 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@therealbahamut Agreed, I played PoE for about 10 months,made 4 or 5 builds,never got to 100 because I got bored and one of my builds was fail (was fun trying to make it work though). I liked the game a lot but the grind became too much so. It is designed for a very niche audience and I always thought a mid 70's score was a must have for niche audiences but will not be loved by all gamers kinda score? That being said IGN should not be your go to for game scores lol (pssst they take handouts for better scores)and if it is god help us all....I look at this game as a grinder's paradise and a great game to stream if you have that fan base but anyone can agree this is not a game which will appeal to the widest audience or is a trend setter in any regard.
      I would have given it an 8/10 if compared to all categories AND only because it gets bonus points for having an ethical cash shop and I think companies should be rewarded for that because the industry as a whole is out of control. When compared to ARPG's it is a 9.5/10 as IMO no game gets a perfect score,not even Witcher 3 when that first came out and I was absolutely blown away by that because as you say it HOOKED me in like no other but its balancing and diversity ultimately was rather lacking by end game.
      I have yet to see a game that hooks you in ethically,has amazing balance and diversity and can check every box, it just is not possible unless you want to lose money. Maybe some day an ageing billionaire will make something like that as the last chapter of his/her life and make an epic game,hiring all the best programmers/artists/designers for one last hurrah but until then won't see it lol. A project truly for the masses and one which modders will work on for decades because after death the source code will be released to all :P

    • @therealbahamut
      @therealbahamut 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that about sums it up. It HAS appeal, but due to the F2P nature it kinda HAS to squirrel away some of the value behind play hours. It's not without its fun factor, mind you; my little guild and I have 4 bank tabs now and are basically playing hardcore tag with our deaths around act 5 or so. It's just...cluttered. Having extreme granularity in progression unfortunately comes with the inevitable downside of extreme micromanagement and that part is ALWAYS going to chase off some audiences. I do think it could stand to make some of the gameplay appeal more visible and less spreadsheet-y in order to slightly frontload the entertainment value a bit more, but every game could stand to do that. For a F2P game though, it is by far one of the better values for your time.
      If it weren't F2P though...fuuuuuuuuuck that.

      You only go into this game and stick with it if you have the commitment to beat the game. Thats kind of what every aRPG is about. Find ways to break the game, the meta and come up with insane builds. And Path of Exile allows for exactly that. What it does well, it does well, but at the same time, if you are not interested in these gameplay aspects, then the game will probably fall flat for you. And I would consider the reviewer as one of those people.
      A quick google search on other reviews of people who play this game for years would quickly revealed that this game is complex and should be approached as such. The reviewer instead went in as if the game would play itself. As a reviewer I should approach a game depending on its genre and what type of game it wants to be. You can then still tell people, that the game is complex and difficult to grasp for new players. As a reviewer it is your responsibility to do that research, be as unbiased as possible, provide different viewpoints and show hand-on-gameplay in order to make a solid conclusion to present to the viewer/reader. Provide information why this game might be worth playing and who might be the target audience. I dont see this in the review. The review does the game no justice, most of the gamemechanics were not even remotely explained, only the most basic reddit complaints used as selling points and nitpicks, while outright ignoring all the content the game provides once you start looking for it.
      I really hope they put this game in a reviewer who cares about complex aRPGs next time, espacially once the 4.0 expansion hits next year or in 2020. The game should be a solid 8 or 9 out of 10.

    I don't think game journalists have to be good at a game to properly review it. I do think they should recognize their shortcomings and not blame them on the game.

    I'm downloading it right now. Seems fun but confusing. I also heard it takes forever to update if you're on Steam.

      Don't use steam. They have a stand alone launcher.

    i love the furious tone of the review against IGN, but also staying calm. Thumbs up!

    So many great points made! You cant review a game if you have only scratched the surface. It's definitely not for everyone but if you like arpg it is a MUST play!!!!

    I started the game and played around 14 hours atm and im in Act 8. I readed the questtext and looked at the skill tree a long time. Im a complete noob at the game, but for my first play through i will not go to guides or anything, i will figure it out myself and play a charakter like i want. It will be a trash charakter, but i enjoy the journey through all Acts.
    Then im done i will look deeper in the game and guides , create a new charakter and try to build a End game charakter. After the Story comes the Endgame and the Grinds, looking forward to all of it.
    POE is a very funny game and i like the style of it. Reminds me in some aspecs of Diablo 2 and that feel is great.

    Warframe veteran here o/ i was looking into path of exile cause i was a bit bored of warframe. since raids got removed a few years back there's really nothing entertaining to do when you sink 1500 hours into this game unless when new big updates launch or fashion frame of course. i was looking for some fresh air. after seeing your review i will try out path of exile.

    What is that ninja dagger forward lunge move that is being shown at 8:40? I am thinking of getting back into this game.
