How to "Test the Spirits," Weak Preaching, and a Bible Passage Condoning Abuse?|Q&A Part 7

  • You asked things. I answered the things.
    Timestamps:
00:14- How should we, in application, test every spirit (1 John 4:1)? I have understood this to mean “pray if something is of God,” but I don’t know if I can trust the feeling I get in response to those prayers.
07:01- I've noticed my pastor doesn't preach about cultural issues like he used to. Shouldn't we be engaging in the issues of our day?
10:34- In 1 Corinthians 13:5 we are told that love "keeps no record of wrongs". How do we reconcile this with setting boundaries to protect from abusive behaviors?
14:43- Assuming it still legitimately exists: what is it actually for, in the context of the modern church? Can we still expect to get precise prophecies such as are found in scripture? What is the difference between a prophecy and a word of knowledge?

I went through a phase twenty or so years ago when I'd say "I think God is saying this," and "I think God is saying that." I made a prediction regarding an upcoming election, that did not turn out the way I predicted. So I asked God why it hadn't turned out the way I predicted. And Man, I DID hear him speak then. He said very clearly in an unmistakable nearly audible voice, "Don't put words in my mouth." And that was the last time I spoke something that was clearly just my imagination as if it were the word of God.

God does use people to give a word. God told me Bush would win the presidency. I kept it to myself. It came to pass. He told me I would have a son and I did. He has many times told me to tell someone something and when I would I’d tell them to pray and make sure I’m right. I never spoke a word that I did not feel pressed to share but I was skeptical if I was hearing correct.

God does pretty much anything He wants. He changes His mind anytime He wants, and for whatever reason He wants. That reason can be Him telling you something so you can pray about it, but instead you go and share it on social media. He is not limited by what we think we know based on what we hear on TH-cam. This is why we read our Scriptures. To know just how big and unlimited He is @@whatever8243

From my church experience, church members would always say "God has told me He wants you to do this. And I'm never wrong about things like this!" - when they wanted you to do something that nobody else wanted to do.
They also ran evening classes on "how to unlock your powers of prophesy" and would tell people they had prophesy gifts if they literally said anything vaguely predictive in a dream. Did you dream about having a bowl of spaghetti l, and then next week you were invited to an Italian restaurant? Looks like you have the power of prophesy!"
    It was so toxic.

Love your videos and your balance here. My church comes from a Pentecostal-rooted denomination, but we definitely believe in balance and testing the spirits. We usually don’t allow just any rando come in and prophecy/give words. But when we have a tested evangelist/pastor give one, it usually aligns with scripture. We also consider Jesus’ words to his disciples: “Rejoice not that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” The focus is the Gospel.

Biblical prophecy must be 100% correct! And as you said, is usually a call to repentance and a warning. Also another way to test is to wait for confirmation, often coming in several different forms-- such as from wise elders, or doors opening, or closing, etc

A Christian now for 45 years I find it rare I agree with half of the stuff I see on social media. Especially from a “Christian” channel. I have watched a few dozen of your videos and have agreed with all but one stance you took. That’s nice to see someone well read that isn’t just giving opinions but biblical defenses for everything. Keep it going! I am super far from the hyper charismatic movement or the new age but have been given several spiritual gifts. If you are ever curious (and I now I will take some flack bout this but) what the gifts of knowledge, wisdom and faith are ‘really’ like then DM me sometime. It’s not like it is on social media in my experience. The real thing presents itself much differently when it actually comes from God and not people seeking attention.

You are quite good at apologetics and you have a very unique approach. Your past involvement in the new age will give you a unique approach to apologetics. When you were in the new age that may have been living in sin however you have turned your experience into something that can be used for good. Whenever we take a bad experience and use it for good we defeat the evil one.

@@exparrow777 1 Corinthians 12 outlines the manifestations of the holy spirit. Prophecy here is for edification, exhortation and comfort to the Church. Just like Tongues with Interpretation. See also 1 Corinthians 14. Prophesy as a Foretelling, God revealing what He is about to do or a situation that will happen in the near or distant future, is found mostly in the Old Testament. There are many foretellings, prophecies, of the coming Christ and what he would accomplish or what would God accomplish by him. Foretellings happen today. There is also the manifestation of Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom. But I would say, 90% of the time, we are first responsible to learn The Word of God, and any other information needed is God's perogouative to reveal.

    • @exparrow777
      @exparrow777 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thomascantasano7816 1 Corinthians 14. I would be careful to point out that every prophecy in the Bible that I'm aware of requires something of the listener. It's never in the sense of the listener having to do nothing but receive "encouragement", which is the type of thing seen far too often recently.
As you know, we are allowed to experience difficulties are for our benefit--there's always something God intends to change in us. In this sense, you can clearly see how "edification" and "exhortation" are relevant. However, even "comfort" is not the bland sort of comfort that many sell which merely says, "feel better because God is going to do something great in your life". Rather, I would see a message from God telling me what I must do as comforting and encouraging.
I write all this so that you would not grant fuel to those who mistakenly believe prophecy includes vague, fortune teller-esque affirming messages. God wants to change who we are to more closely resemble Him. It's almost never the case (none that I can think of) where prophecy does not demand something from its hearers.

  • @AlexanderosD
    @AlexanderosD ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Excellent! Thank you!
"The rule of wait" is so perfect!
It really is a practice of "wait and watch".
Don't despise prophecy, but when told something, it can often be best to simply say "okay." And then wait, ask questions, contrast with scripture, think about it, pray to the Lord about it not asking for an answer just telling Him about it, and just watch to see what the Lord does or does not do.
If you prophecy to me, and I look at you blankly and say "okay" and walk away, don't feel insulted, I'm simply weighing it and presenting it to the Lord.
Be concerned though if your "prophecy" is not from the Lord.
The many that are flocking in to "prophecy" are really endangering themselves by saying things the Lord has not said. And the church has made too much room for these empty words and weak preaching.

Exactly. Well taught, and well said. To your first subject, I've come across two "I received a word from God" examples, and one vivid dream Revelation.
I found the two word from God claimants falling short, as they contradicted the Word of God, and actually would ADD TO scripture, as some sort of personal revelation.
The vivid dream I found testing positive, as his description perfectly reflected a real situation, in a context that simply amplified truths were told in the Bible.

"Forgiveness with boundaries is loving and wise". Well said! I have been going through a toxic situation for over a year now, and because of heavy past rejection, trauma etc, my c-ptsd issues I was being triggered constantly. I was struggling lately asking God if I'm allowed to have boundaries because often some of these people I'm around would be very abusive regardless of my doing my best to forgive and let by-gones be by-gones. I had a bit of a religious "works" attitude at first because of my upbringing, but I've realised recently I was people pleasing. I had a lot of bitterness in my heart before repentance and God showed me I need to let go of my offences, which made me feel like things were unfair, but I'm finally starting to see, he wanted me FREE and to stay free of bitterness to protect me as I was starting to feel it come back like it was before I got saved. It's a process of inner healing and to not worry so much what other people say, just knowing God forgives me, knows me and loves me is enough and even though navigating relationships is tough sometimes, we can't keep moving forward with God if we don't let go.

So i've tried to warn people about the Word of Faith/Prosperity which go hand in hand. They did not take it well, in fact I had no idea just how much of and idol this was to my Christians friends. They opposed me and said, his preaching is so good. Well I saw threw him immediately. Yet at times he does preach what sounds like a good biblical word. But every once in a while he goes off the deep end and say's " we are equal to Jesus, we are little god's". To me this is making a substitute! Thank you Sister.

If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

I started looking into pentecostal fellowships BC of the cessation in other fellowships I was in. I don't want charismania nor to block out the Holy Spirit for the sake of time schedule & routine (songs, sermon, repeat). What I noticed in the "Pentecostal" ones was that prophecy looked nothing like the prophecy I read in my Bible. Still disappointed because I'd like to see the kingdom advancing in power and in truth like it did in Acts. I am chalking it up to it being a problem for the USA at this point. We as a nation have to be the ones in sin causing this situation BC God does no wrong.

God requires only two things from us. Love Him with ALL our heart, soul, and mind and to love our neighbors as ourselves. The 10 Commandments are the embodiment of these. Love, agape love, is at the center piece and is the essential part in fulfilling these commandments. Preaching, teaching, or prophecying any message without these goals in mind is heresy and should be avoided.

Thank you for putting this out there. When I was a new Christian coming from a New Age background this caused confusion for me in the beginning. The Holy Spirit guided me through it as I continually prayed for discernment. But this message is super helpful for those developing discernment on their journey.

The gift of prophecy today is the equivalent to the gift of revelation. That is the ability to find the truth in everything scriptural. this is the work of the spirit who Jesus said would "lead you into all truth". that truth goes beyond the written word and comes from the fruit of a holy life. It opens the eyes to see. and those who possess it are seers who have the "spirit of prophecy". A depth of understanding that helps them lead others away from deception.

Very Sound! Every week we have a "Prophetic Moderator" designated at our church who determines if the word given needs to be shared or not. As far as I'm concerned, I think that's the way it's supposed to be. Much Love and Blessings Always!

The Eastern Orthodox tradition we are trained to test prophecy or revelation hard and never to trust it ourselves. One of the big things we are taught to do is first test if an experience produces both wonder/thanksgiving and repentance, if it only produces one of these or if it is neither it is to be rejected out of hand. Even if both wounder/thanksgiving and repentance comes we test it against scripture, the tradition of the church and ask our spiritual guide never relying on our own interpretation.

Hi Melissa, I have been following your TH-cam channel for a little over a year now and I truly love your content and have learned quite a bit. In this video you said a few times “I give you Permission,” and it stood out to me that I kept wondering what you meant by that. Scripture (the word of GOD) gives us the authority of discernment. Just a thought because words are powerful and carry a lot of weight.

I got saved in 1995 from New Age. I got saved in a Pentecostal church. Got filled with the Spirit four months later by a traveling evangelist. However, I ended up leaving that church because they were so dogmatic about being filled with the Spirit. I found a new church and was there for at least 12 years. I moved away and came back. I began to get involved in ministries there this summer past year. I found myself seeing the same thing happen.. unless you're filled with His Spirit and testified to such you were not in the club. I know very devout, truly Godly Christians NOT FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT WITH THE EVIDENCE OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES. I wrote that in bold to proclaim to whatever that's out there trying to make this truth. I am still filled with His Spirit, but because of the nature of who God is, I think it's wrong to push it on anyone and to be so dogmatic in what I see as a group think. My husband and daughter would have nothing to do with this church. Over the past few month I have attended a Messianic Synagogue and with much prayer and deliberation I left that church I was attending to go to Synagogue after my husband asked me if I would continue going there. He now goes with me and is little by little growing in faith. I have to be patient. This synagogue believes in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but so far so good. It's not being pushed on anyone and I finally feel I have true found my "home". I am very reluctant to have anything to do with "Spirit-filled" churches now. Sad to say. I appreciate your videos Melissa. There was an ever present attitude in both churches to do do do and continually playing and performing contemporary music to draw people in and my spirit became weary of the "show" of the doing and all of it in my opinion down right fake.. appearing as a type of emotionalism that I personally could not stay in. God led me out as I was testing the spirits to see if they be of Him. I had to leave.

    Two thumbs up.
One tests the spirits first by asking, "Does the statement agree with God's Word?"
If God is leading me to say or to do something, it would in no way contradict any part of the written Word, the whole counsel of God. The same for what some teacher or preacher teaches or advocates. For a teacher, we also mark his life, his behavior - is it also consonant with Scripture? Of course, we need then to know Scripture, to read and apply it in context and with understanding.

Many years ago a man supposedly told me a prophecy but it wasn't like "your going to have a business this time next year" he said "stop holding on to the past it's getting in the way of your walk with God" I was fixated on the past then but I've been delivered from that now. It took many years after this but it happened. So I feel they happen but very rarely and if someone does give one and you don't feel like you need to change something about yourself then they are false.

my wife comes from a family background that was pretty deeply entrenched in Bethel "god-thoughts" theology for prophecy. My wife has mostly escaped it from what I can tell, but family gatherings can be difficult as people start saying things like "I was just talking to God and he told me to come over here and rub your shoulders" and I hate it. like, it feels so manipulative to say something like that. Even if that was true, why would you say "God told me to do X", why wouldn't you just do it?
I'd love prayer and some wisdom here, as I can tell this will be an ongoing battle in the future. thank you for your content, Melissa!

I love how the word says “every SPIRIT that confesses Jesus has come in the flesh” NOT every PERSON. Many false teachers confess Jesus has come in the flesh with their MOUTH, but to confess that with your SPIRIT is completely different. If it is from your Spirit EVERYTHING you say will TESTIFY of Jesus’s death, burial, & resurrection. All of your doctrine will align with the finished work of Christ.

People seem to me to want to do the will of God but many are doing what they want, like being a missionary, cause they felt a “burden” on them. I believe, this is me, I believe that if you feel something is from God, to do something that there will be a confirmation so you will know that’s from God. Pray about it and fast also and wait. Oh it could be months or years later, but in God’s time, not yours.
