Exposing Genuine and Fake Spiritual Encounters

  • Some Christians will say that for every counterfeit spiritual experience out there, there's an authentic version of it. This is how some odd and bizarre behaviors are explained to be not only biblical but also a display of spiritual power and favor from God. But what if that's not the case and there is more to this? I asked Dr. Berg, an expert on this topic, to come on my channel and talk about this.

    Just for everyone's FYI:
Dr. Berg called me and said how delighted he was that so many of you messaged him and visited his channel. He was especially pleased about how kind and warm you all were in your comments and messages. He's used to seeing a lot of hostility in his comments section, so it made me happy to know that my audience has given him such an impression. He went out of his way to tell me this. So thank you all for being wonderful.

Hey Melissa, I have a question for you. I am surrounded by hyper charismatic Kenneth Coopland lovers-- and many of them are really into doing Shabbat and celebrating the Jewish feasts etc. In my mind I see how they do this, and it seems legalistic. But then I don't want that to taint me from wanting to learn about these things, but it has.
Therefore, I view the celebrating of these things as legalistic. I attended a Messianic Jewish church for a while, and it was the same experience.
Is it possible to celebrate and do these things without tiptoeing into legalism?
Does this make sense? I am not sure how to handle this. I also need prayer because of all this surrounding me.

I fully agree on those two things he mentioned. After 20 months of walking with Jesus I came to truly understand our God. After really understanding but not being able to fathom his immense grace and forgiveness, I understood that putting him first and obeying his commands is ALL I need to do. My faith switched to being FULLY in. I don’t know how to describe it, but I really get it now. I full heartedly trust Him on all things. He speaks with me through his word, I’m hungry for it. And all anxiety is gone. It’s all different and so wonderful. He’s so so good 🙏🏽🥹P.S. my current external struggles did not change, but my inner world completely changed.

Great conversation! If more people could just appreciate the simplicity of it all. There is such rest in having peace with God, trusting in Him, and just living a simple life. And literally sharing the good news with everyone. One point was made on how we tend to lean toward pragmatism and "doing it ourselves". If I just look around it's easy to see that all good things came from Him, usually as just gifts out of nowhere kind of thing, including the various people He let's me meet. Even the internal changes, things nobody could have ever explained, has been this amazing gift. I'm blown away and it's been 7 years and I'm still blown away so yay! And no I don't have money or any wordly assets to speak of, but God. He's soveriegn! What else do you need?

If not, to me "to test" or "to try" is the same. I can test different brands of laundry soap or try them. I'm still finding out which works and which doesn't. I don't think it's saying, "to try" as in, be difficult or to experiment.
It's Strong's word, 1381 dikimazete (can't type Greek on my phone). That meaning doesn't change.

Scripture doesn't get supernaturally erased. Everything will pass away, but God's words will never pass away. It is test the spirit, meaning, we test what is said against God's word, and if it doesn't line up, then it's possible that spirit is not of God.

I think it's good, though, to ask God to show us how He sees us, and this is the reason why: Sin darkens the intellect. Therefore, we are not always going to see things as they really are. As a society, we have removed God from the public square, and many people have turned their backs on God.
Collectively, we have greatly offended God and, per prophecy, He is going to show us how our souls appear to Him through the Illumination of Conscience. Some people have already experienced it, but the time is coming when almost all of humanity will be shown how their souls appear to God. Most people will drop to their knees and weep, but the Illumination of Conscience will be necessary in order for people to see how we have been offending God, so that we may stop and make God our top priority.

I think you could fit the OT prophets into the same vein as the gift of NT prophecy. Their prophecies edified, exhorted, and comforted the people of God. It encouraged righteousness while speaking to the need for repentance. Often the call to repentance was accompanied by the promise of blessing and protection that came with turning back to God. It encouraged them to follow him, to be true to him, and to avoid the things that either caused them to fall or caused the nations around them to fall. It did address the danger of disobeying God, but I see no difference in this from the gift of NT prophecy. The principles God gives in the OT for judging prophecies and those who call themselves prophets would still apply.

When I was a baby Christian, (fresh out of the new age 😢) I got saved and I'd started reading my bible but there were things I very much didn't understand.
I had 3 'visions' in the first year and they were ALWAYS to explain something about my life (trauma) or a scripture that I couldn't understand.
Just an example...I was so worried that I didn't know how to sort my sin out, I didn't know how to live a Christian life and I hd a quick vision of a hand (lovingly) trimming a fruit tree. The bad fruit was removed and the branches were tidied up. It lasted no more than 3 seconds and then i understood that it was God that would sort the mess (me) out.
I haven't have them since I joined a church and got into serious biblical studies.
My conclusion is that whilst I was very vulnerable and tender the holy spirit gave me a couple of hints to help me along.

Isn't it interesting how almost everything in the bible relates to fruit and growing etc. God had shown me during a difficult circumstance a couple of years ago that it was to produce fruit (Galatians 5:22-23), although I understand it now, its one thing to understand logically, and another to go through pain and suffering. Growing is painful though, if you ever had growing pains as a kid, it made you want to stay short that's for sure lol

I think this is important. I think with todays climate of people on youtube talking about all these experiences they have, it makes normal Christians feel unloved or inadequate. Then it creates a vacuum in their walk that something will fill. Someone asked me the difference between prophets and psychics, and i said biblically prophets were sent to warn Gods people and lift up God and not self. Its okay to encourage but that is now the "call of a prophet" in mainstream Christianity. It is a mockery of what prophets suffered in the Bible. I mean really everyone in the Bible. We have diminished the sufferings that apostles of the NT and the people/leaders/prophets of OT went through.

I love the gifts of the Holy Spirit and love the Word of Truth, as it comes through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, in many instances. I grew up Baptist and there was always a wall put up when it came to the Holy Spirit and being baptized in the Holy Spirit and Fire. Long story short, I heard what God was telling me and I did it. He then baptized me in the Holy Spirit and Fire. I now have a responsibility to be mature in the Holy Spirit, but also as free as a dove in certain instances, always maintaining awareness. Saying there is an over emphasis on the gifts of the Spirit is not biblical, but I do understand what you mean as some churches seem to make people feel less than if they have not received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and is definitely a problem.

I was broken for 10 years and i needed help. I cried out. His voice was real and clear. Forgive her. I do realize that a voice can be misleading. The real experience is knowing his voice and that isn’t taught.

This has been a great discussion . Praise God. Please prayerfully consider this one thought though. Meditation is very useful . Not for having g visions or mystical experiences. But for concentration. Clearing the chaos and confused thinking. Through breathing and meditation I am better able to take my thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ and the Gospel.

I have been thinking a lot in this area lately and about how mental illnesses plays a role in a lot of this. Many people with schizophrenia can have what they see as religious experiences and hearing God, angels or demons as well as visions. To them, these things are very real and they need to get it out there and have now a platform on social media to do so. I wish there was more discussion on that and how people with mental illnesses are not getting treatment but are instead held up in religion to be super spiritual and having gifts.

In some cultures the mentally ill (schizophrenia, mania) are considered gods and are revered. I never thought of them being in positions of authority in the church because of how they are perceived! Thank you for making that comment. I have bipolar 1 and this topic interests me very much. I struggle with what is real and what's not sometimes.

The primary purpose of a "prophet", is to encourage people to turn back or turn to God. Not just any God, but the Holy One of the Bible, Triune and Eternal. A prophet type isn't a person who walks around claiming to be a prophet, but rather points out the holiness of God, and the folly of not being in relationship with Him, made possible by the work of the Son through the power of the Holy Spirit.

I love the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and love the Word of Truth as it comes through the gifts of the Holy Spirit in many instances. I grew up Baptist and there was always a wall put up when it came to the Holy Spirit and being baptized by the Holy Spirit and Fire. Long story short, I heard what God was telling me and I did it. He then baptized me in the Holy Spirit and Fire. I now have a responsibility to be mature in the Holy Spirit, but also as free as a dove in certain instances always maintaining awareness.

Its amazing to hear stories of real and genuine encounters with jesus that transformed the lives of ex muslim people. Their response to seeing jesus isnt posting it on yt. But its dhing and living for jesus the true God and sharing him and his gospel in muslim countrys.

Such a good vid, sis. This really helped me as i have been trying to discern if some recent experiences were from God and this confirmed it big time. Well i already knew, but it always helps having sound members of the body of Christ confirm that youre not crazy and you are able to see what is from the Lord.
Main take away, the gifts are not for me! They are for the body to edify God's people. That takes so much pressure off. The reality that God is I AM, regardless of my emotions, circumstances and failures is massive. That is a true and faithful saying.
