The thing is she is actually pretty good at Crusader Kings but that requires different things than HOI4. That is the thing about Paradox games. They are all similar in a lot of ways, but also have vast differences between them as well. I have played every Paradox game that there is, and going from Crusader Kings to HOI4 seems like that would be the hardest leap to make as far as commonalities between games. Give her some time and she will become decent at it. After this video I checked out her channel because I was unfamiliar with her but she seemed like a nice person. Her Crusader Kings videos are pretty good.
Yea. The way you play in HoI, CK, Stellaris or Surviving Mars is extremely different. Edit! Can't forget Surviving the Aftermath. Came out not to long ago.
Btw, I’d like to take this moment to bring up how inadequate the current in-game tutorial for hoi4 (and most other pdx/any grand strategy game ever) is. It should not be the community’s job to teach itself how the game works. I know we just sort of live with it because “that’s how it’s always been” and we just assume that these games are too complex for a truly comprehensive in-game tutorial, justifying the youtube tutorial approach, but truthfully it does not need to be that way. So what’s wrong with the current tutorial, and how can we fix it? Well, the main problems it has are that 1. It is out of date and not representative of the current game. 2. It only covers some of the more basic mechanics, like troop movement and building things, without talking about any of the intricacies surrounding them, like consumer goods, construction speed, how production efficiency works, how supply works and how it affects units, combat width, division designers, xp gain, etc. 3. The tutorial can hardly be considered a dedicated one, as it’s just an italy game that holds your hand for a year at the start. So how do we fix it? Well, to start off there should be a segmented number of tutorials, not one big one, that each covers a specific topic in-depth, and maybe each topic has subtopics. For instance, an economy tutorial that covers the balance between mils and civs, infrastructure, equipment production and trade. A battle tutorial that has many subsections not just instructing how to move units, but what stats mean and how they affect a battle, terrain, effects from pack of supply, generals and field marshals, division templates, veterancy etc. And this covers my next point, but having segmented tutorials on new mechanics added, like tank, naval, and air designs, spies, high command spirits, dealing with resistance, managing a puppet, production licenses. I’m cutting myself off here because I’ve already written an essay, but I hope the one person who reads this gets my point.
As someone who streamed a pretty bad naval invasion as Germany, and had a pretty great segment of the HOI4 community show up, I'm honestly pretty proud that Cara seems to be fairly chill about the learning curve! I was... much less chill. HOI4 is/was very intimidating to jump into as someone brand new, but generally the community has seemed pretty supportive, as it should be if you want new players to jump in! Grand Strategy is probably my weakest genre, so still pretty trash at HOI, but at least I can watch stuff like this to feel reassured a bit.
Have a game where you just play regular single player as any country but at the end of the episode you have to give up the save to another youtuber and this can go on for maybe 10 times where the leader is just constantly switching and they're free to do whatever they want
For a second-time HoI4 player, I'd say Cara did well above average - though she could probably have benefitted from watching some more Alex the Rambler vids first! ;)
Honestly, as a noob really like these videos, because I learn a bit from them. Hopefully eventually I actually manage to complete a game without relying on the alias.
Think Cara or anyone for that matter that plays HoI4 for the very first time, should play the 1.0 version without any DLC to get used to the basics, the game was much simpler then.
I remember my first game of hoi4 where I was playing the soviets and I accidentally incircled the Germans in stalingrad. But I still held Leningrad and Moscow.
Have they fixed the bug where officer purges don't reduce paranoia? Because if not just succeeding at a soviet civil war is frankly an accomplishment for a new player.
Honestly a lot of us probably started playing hearts of iron before all these extra Add-on mechanics were here. I know for Eu4 it was incredibly complex for my first time and I absolutely did not get the hang of it till hundreds of hours into the game. A lot of these things are not incredibly obvious and you need experience first hand to know what is needed and not. I hope she at least had fun in the end!
I honestly think paradox should flip the order of the research tabs. When I started playing I did the same thing and got all the military tech first because it’s the first tab on the research menu, and I thought it would be most important.
That intro takes me back to my first few HOI attempts. Good times. Also what's going on in Siberia at the end of the video? It looks like the Japanese broke through.
