Now that I'm over 40, the motto I try to live by is: assumption kills. Steals my peace, makes me accuse people of things without/before I have proof, can wreck established connections and dismantal budding ones. This is something I have to remind myself to do on purpose to retrain my mind and create new neuropathways or I can revert back quickly into the land of assumptions. I think those of us who are not naturally trusting can have an especially hard time with this but it is also proof that if we can choose to do it on purpose, so can others.

Reminds me of the PAUSE acronym for checking yourself against unconscious bias and prep yourself for conscious inclusion: P-Pause and observe, A-Acknowledge how you're feeling about the person or situation, U - understand, go deeper, could there be something else behind the immediate judgement? S- Search for the most empowering explanation; E - execute your next action based on the previous steps. It's a little simpler than 21 questions but the principles are the same. Good to see Simon encouraging this type of reflection anyway, it's really important that we foster more inclusive and humane workplaces and through his influence he's helping do just that. I am a naturally curious person, so I have found myself approaching situations throughout life and in the workplace with this mentality. I try step away and look at the situation from every possible angle instead of assuming the worst, but I have never put a number to it. I really like the 21 Alternatives. Thank you for that.
Curiosity has not been a problem for me ever since I decided to become somebody that wants to find out the truth at all costs. I found most people don't want the truth, because of either it's too painful or for other emotional reasons. Nietchsze said once to be comfortable and happy believe, and to find out the truth, inquire. That quote was so true.

The goal of the exercise isn't to find out why someone is like the way that the are, but rather to cultivate a mindset that encourages open-mindedness instead of judgement. How necessary is this exercise?
Rather than resorting to Occam's Razor?
The goal of the exercise isn't to find out why someone is like the way that the are, but rather to cultivate a mindset that encourages open-mindedness instead of judgement.
As for finding out why someone is like the way that they are, it's not that hard to just ask them, rather than resorting to assumptions. And if you do end up having to resort to assumptions, always keep in mind the possibility that it is wrong.
