    From my experience, either a person wants to read, in which case he will just find a way to read on his own, without needing some sort of tips or he is just saying that he wants to read. If someone is not reading then he doen't actually want to read. I think it is just as simple as that. I don't see people needing tips on how to waste every minute of their lives and yet they do it so well.

    6600 doesn't seem like a lot in one year. That's one history book a month.

    Hi Steve, I don’t know whether you reply to comments and I just want to say how much I’ve enjoyed your videos and love your cynicism and humour. I stumbled onto booktube here in the U.K. and your channel arrived on my feed. I was looking at cross stitch FlossTubers and they are a wonderful community to belong to, and even commentators belong which is wonderful for people like me who can’t speak without stammering. I call myself a reader now I’m retired. I like nothing better than a clear diary and lots of time to read or stitch/knit. I love big novels and read on my kindle. I actually killed my last kindle by falling on it but it saved my hand! I don’t carry my phone out of the house but I do carry my new kindle in case I fall again! Not!
    You have given me such joy this week you and your precious Freida. She is gorgeous.
    Thank you so much
    Sara 😊💕🌷

    Hello Steve. I read everywhere in restaurants, in church, at work, in the car, in stores, in parking lots, outside of church, at home, in bed. I constantly read when I’m not at work.

    Setting a daily page goal really helped me. I have my main book mark but then also a sticky note on my page goal for the day. If I fall short the sticky note still gets moved the same amount the next day and I have to catch up.

    I know I'm still supposed to keep my eyes on the prize but Frieda is doing Yoga in the background! :D I watched the video you linked to and yes, the minute he talks about that service it becomes apparent what the video is really about...

    The best way to read 6,600 pages a year is to do just that. If you need to watch a video about it you don't want to do it and let's cut the crap.

  • @jpdmanchester3226
    @jpdmanchester3226 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Don't usually watch videos twice but did so with both yours and the kids. The tips are actually quite useful but can't help the feeling of watching an info-mercial. As for the "High production values" - well thank god you've not fallen for that one Steve.

    Reminds me of A J Jacobs and his I'm going to do a weird thing for a year and then write a book method - old school youtube! 6,600 pages - isn't that how much you want us to read for your read-a-longs this month?

    Please, please always post the link in the description box below, no matter how breathtakingly terrible. Whenever you post a response video I immediately go to the original video and watch it, so I can play along at home.
    And oh, was this a great video to watch without knowing -- that transition from advice into an ad was so slippery smooth that I could feel the Vaseline on my eyeballs!
    I actually suspect smart advertisers would avoid this _sucker_ method of springing an ad on a viewer. It soils both the shill & the product. (And yes, this product is AWFUL, but the ad by definition shouldn't high-light this fact!)
    Excellent video Steve, it gets to the heart of what you love about TH-cam: people speaking frankly & passionately to each other.

    I do find the “ad-sandwich” videos annoying, and they’re becoming more prevalent. However, I think it’s a bit of an exaggeration to say these people are incapable of ever telling the truth. But the warning to be on my guard, and not too gullible is duly noted. Usually those videos make a little more sense in the pairing of the ad with the video around it. Like tips for how I keep my house clean with an ad for a vacuum in the middle. This one was how I read printed books with an ad for abridged audio “books” in the middle. As you said, the tips were good. It’s almost as if Jordan really doesn’t care about blinkest and accidentally (on purpose?) made an anti-blinkest video by giving good tips on reading printed books lol!

    I can't agree with you more, so many TH-camrs are just in it for the money and the videos I love are those that are just real folks sharing their love of writing and reading, and I really don't care for all of the "How To" and "Courses" in the writing community here on TH-cam, it's just insane. I do agree that these tips are helpful but yes, this individual is just in it for the money and I doubt he's read that many pages. Thanks for sharing, your videos are the type I truly love, just real talk about books!

    Is it weird of me to say that nobody really cares how many pages you read as long as you like most of them? It’s not a contest.

    Have you sold out to your groundskeeping company?
    :)
    Seriously- this is indeed an important, almost moral message. Sales tactics masquradeing as life advise has become horribly common. Would anyone trust a 'financial advisor' in a bank who advocates the purchase of shares in the same bank? TH-cam has to grow up and regulate these channels before some Ponzi scandal erupts. Of course, the best defence is to know the scam and walk away.

    I've seen the same phenomenon with one of my other hobbies, home audio/hi-fi equipment. There were literally only a handful of people making videos on the subject for fun until a guy named Z Reviews who wears a GoPro on his head and talks about speakers and headphones hit it big. Lately there have been an influx of new channels with flashy production values and sponsored videos looking to cash in. One guy couldn't understand why a video reviewing Klipsch speakers that is also sponsored by Klipsch might be a problem. "Don't I deserve to be paid for my time?" is a common refrain. At least he's not shilling for audio Cliff's Notes, I guess 😆.

    hi steve, i know this is an old video but it's not only dudebros who do blinkist sponsorships. there's a female dudebro (self help addict, makes money from 'courses' she offers, reads nonfiction and i use the term 'reads' loosely, doesn't have a real job) named zoey arielle who's done blinkist sponsorships

    I don't own a cell phone. Never have. I do always take a book with me everywhere. One thing that nags at me....people that tell me they love reading but it's blatantly obvious they are not readers. I think they want to believe they are readers..or want to relate to readers. I know many people like that....and very few actual readers in my life. I cringe that those very people that claim to be readers only say it when it's a bragging moment...and yet those people don't even have one small shelf of books in their home...not even a mantel....not even a small stack somewhere...and can't even sit and have a 30 minute conversation with me about any book at all.

      Dalai Momma Drama I could not agree more, I have a feeling that a lot of these so called celebrity book clubs (apart from Reese Witherspoon and Emma Watson) are fake and it seems like the “it” thing to do. Kind of like having a perfume or makeup line. True readers would never be this blatant about lying to people about the books that they read. I believe even Oprah doesn’t read half the books on her own book club, it’s probably more corporate than see let’s on

    Ok. The kid is cute, his video is visually pleasing. And he’s nice and quiet here. I find that level of commercial smoothness off-putting, though, and so would never choose to watch him without some sort of outside prompt.
    And yeah, it’s immediately obvious that this boy thinks he poos chocolate ice cream.
    From almost the first sentence he’s giving canned generic advice that’s available everywhere and can be applied to almost any activity that one would like to start doing more of. There are uncountable books and videos using these precise tips for increasing one’s time making art, for example.
    And then came...The Pitch! And for something that’s b.s.
    Sigh. And then there’s the whole English major thing.

    I liked your analysis of the two types of TH-camr - the passionate nerd and the salesperson and their underlying motivations and goals. It made me think about the TH-cam videos I watch.

      Actually, I've very much liked listening to some of David Ray Griffin and some of the other obviously-sane 9-11 people, even if I disagree with them (I'm relieved to report that at last right now plenty of those videos are still up on TH-cam). As for other subjects, well, I'm a little bit personally biased on the subject, but I prefer John Judge to all the rest. I miss him.

  • @stantonsullivan-readdelillo
    @stantonsullivan-readdelillo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Have to say I disagree once again on this subject, Steve. I watched some of the videos off both his channels and while a good chunk of content (like the video you mention) comes off as fatuous, a good deal of the videos are him and his wife talking about their marriage and the like. Far less sinisterly vapid than the Paul brothers.

    • @saintdonoghue
      @saintdonoghue  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair enough, but one of my points was that if a TH-camr works hard to fake sincerity in one video, your assumption should be that their working even harder to fake sincerity in the videos that actually seem sincere. If you assume they're actually switching from manipulation to sincerity and back again, like flipping some kind of switch, you're just asking to be lied to.

    • @stantonsullivan-readdelillo
      @stantonsullivan-readdelillo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Donoghue That seems plausible. I don't disagree entirely. But watching his videos on that channel one starts to tell which videos he's making to try and trend and which videos are made with genuine sentiment. At least to me. After awhile, I found myself slightly off put by some of their content, and yet found many of their videos tone to be miles away from the TH-camrs I most loathe. Anyway, thanks for the video nonetheless.

    • @stantonsullivan-readdelillo
      @stantonsullivan-readdelillo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Donoghue I guess I just don't quite find sponsorships (that are disclosed) irreconcilable with the possibility of the sponsored to be sincere. But I see where you're coming from.
