  • I went back to visit family for the holidays and decided to take the train. It has been on my bucket list for a while and I found a great deal. We took the VIA Rail train departing from Vancouver and arriving outside of Edmonton.

Oh, I forgot to explain the black eye haha. For those that haven’t seen on Facebook or Instagram I slipped on the ice and smashed my head pretty bad. Wish it was a better story, but it’s all healed up now. I'm overdue for some stealth camping so I've got one planned next if all goes well. Cheers!

      That’s good.
I’m about that age and if my wife dies I’ll be poor with two kids. No hope of travel or ticking off bucket lists. We’ll have to move into an apartment and hope my kids can get scholarships since we’ll have half the income. How do you do it? Big policy? No kids? We probably need to get life insurance is what I’ve learned from all this.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@2nd-place what has worked for us wouldn't work for many (most?) people, and it's not been easy, but it's been what's made us happy. I had four kids with him (newborn twins, 9y & 11y when he passed) and there was no life insurance (he had just gone to work for his best friend's new company). How we got here is a long story but we're "poor" monetarily and live on his social security. We go without a lot of what others may call important but we just appreciate what we do have more than worry about what we don't. The short answer of how we live cheap and travel is that we have lived in an RV since 2016. Would having had a life insurance policy made life much easier? Maybe... Maybe not. That's all I can say about that. Did it ruin us to not have one? Some would say yes, some no.
I can't tell anyone what they should or can do but I can say that I thought I would be finished if he died. I wish he hadn't died, of course, but I'm far from finished.
Wishing you all the best! ❤️

@@2nd-place oh, I should mention that my mom passed away in 2017 and I was left a little insurance money for a small nest egg and some bonus travel but we were doing it before then.

Hey Steve, love a good train vid :) So you know and can sleep better, you weren't running red signals. It's generally only the driver that sees the green signal because as soon as the first set of wheels on the first bogey goes past the pole, the signals change to red. You were nowhere near the front of the train, so only saw red lights as you went past.

The way they do this is the sections of track are electrically isolated from one another and there is a voltage applied across the two rails. The train completes the circuit across the rails to indicate there is something on that section of track.
This reply has a very important purpose that might save a life one day. Whenever there is a section of track with a road crossing, the crossing guards and signals are tied into this system. A car which has stalled on the tracks does not complete the circuit, so the train has a green signal, and by the time they see the car on the track, they don't have enough stopping distance to avoid hitting it. If a vehicle is stuck on the tracks, grab a set of jumper cables and connect them from one rail to another. This will turn the signals red on that section of track. The crossing signal and guard will activate too, so don't panic, it is you that is doing it.
A little bonus from this: the railroad has a central traffic control center where they monitor all of the trains. They know there is not supposed to be anything on that section of track, yet there is and you have stopped all of the traffic there. If you have no communications, don't worry because someone has been dispatched to investigate.

    • @nick1austin
      @nick1austin ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@Just_a_Steve When the last axle on the train passes the lights the lights don't go straight to green. They go Amber first, then go green only when the last axel passes the next set of lights (so red 》amber 》green as the train goes through each section). A green light therfore means there are two empty track section ahead.

With my 'rail geek' hat on, a bit of info for you about the red lights - a railway signal will turn to red as soon as the lead cab and driver pass it, so it'd be green (or yellow) for them when it's passed, but red by the time you, as a passenger, pass it.

The rear car, is a buffer car in case the rear of train is impacted. This ridiculous ruling came down from a beuarcrat back east, that probably has never rode a train. The Canadian has travelled across Canada for over 60 years and cannot ever recall a rear end collision.

To keep the little ones entertained I would point out the mini-hippos (pigs), the short necked giraffes (Ayrshire and Guernsey cattle) and spotted zebras (Appaloosa horses). The Amish kids sitting near us would listen in and laugh along with us. So much silliness and joy. Thank you Steve and Crazy Neighbor for sharing. Amazing trip, I’m sure BW was with you in spirit - great approach to life as well, do it now whist you still can.
As for running red lights, as the power car with the driver passes the signal (at green) it would have instantly changed to red, and being so far back down such a long train that is what you were seeing.
Many thanks once again, and best wishes for the new year ahead to you all.

Man... I didn't realize the sights in and around Vancouver would get to me, especially the greater Vancouver area. I worked for the olympics, was on a couple huge construction sites, and used to road trip pretty often. Winter in Vancouver was always a special time, and I'm surprised how much I miss it. I moved back to Vancouver Island in April 2021, and have made new friends here, but most of my adult life was spent there. Nothing like picking a direction and starting to drive, and being able to go as far as I want!

I'm glad to see you're trying to live your best life. I've been watching you since the boondoocking days. You're a strong guy and you've got a good friend in CN*. Y'all take care.
    Happy New Year from Alabama!

Steve I did this trip from Ontario to BC and Back as a Kid. Looks exactly the same 15+ Years later. The Red Signals is because your train engine tripped them the second you went over it. So if you got closer to the front you would see them green.
Edit: I just want to say, I'm glad they still do the crazy random stops. We stopped in a random farmer field in BC when we went haha. Closest to our family there.
    Thanks for sharing.

It's awesome to see other adventures! I love stealth camping but VIA Rail is such a bucketlist item for me and it's so fun to see your perspective on it. If you ever get the chance Amtrak has some really fabulous trips through the US like Empire Builder and California Zephyr that are straight vibes in coach or roomette.

Another great trip, Stev. I have to agree with the "not putting things off." My beautiful wife passed away suddenly just before Christmas and the day before my birthday. There are many things I wish we had gotten to do together. As always, stay strong.

That looks so fun! How much are tickets for something like that?

I was kind of wondering too so I had a quick look. Single, one way, lower berth looks like $710 (discounted, when available) or $835. In Canadian $ of course, taxes included (estimated). A bit more than I was anticipating but then everything is now... lol.

Camping on a train is still camping! I’ve always wanted to take a trip by rail like this. Another great installment, Steve. Thanks for sharing.

Jess is with you all the time, Steve, and I know this gave her so much joy, as does your determination to seize the day and not put things off. Great video.

This brings back a lot of childhood memories for me, we always used to ride these trains (dome cars and all) between Toronto and Quebec City back when they had a fancier level of service on this route. It's amazing to think that the dome car you were sitting in might have been one of the same ones I was in 40 years ago..
And Steve, I think the same as you about "do it now because you never know when it'll be too late" mantra. We might be less comfortable in retirement because of having done it, but will have had a lot of life experiences.
