How to make a battleship in WWI. Step 1. Build hull. Step 2. Build decks. (Insert Step 3 of putting gun of big boom) Step 4. Bulge. Step 5. More bulge. Step 6. Be wide battleship. Yes I edited step 3
Strangely, my wife didn't believe me when after watching this video I told her that my personal "side bulges" are not excess fat, but are to protect against torpedos. ; )
Bruh torpedo belts were a thing in 1908: The German Imperial High Seas Fleet introduced torpedo belts with the first modern armored cruiser SMS Blücher and the simultaneous battleships of the Nassau-class since 1908. It was the only fleet during the duration of the First World War to do so.
Well you're kind of right the blucher was not the first modern cruisers she was a fairly advanced armored cruisers when she launched but not the first by a long shot. The blucher and nassua class had torpedo bulkheads. These where armored walls inside the ships hull designed to contain the blast and flooding from a torpedo. Torpedo bulges are designed to detonate the torpedo away from the hull.
In regards to the torpedoes themselves, during WW2 several (mostly) succesful attempts were made to create torpedoes that do not explode on contact with the ship's hull at the waterline but to propel itself underneath the target's hull where an electromagnetic switch picks up on the close proximity to the metal hull and triggers, eventually detonating the torpedo right beneath the target's keel
About Yamato main battery - if we are talking about enemy's battleships - yes, it's true. But Yamato's 460mm guns fired during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. These are confirmed in both US and Japanese reports that he had close hits near USS Gambier Bay (CVE) and USS Johnston (DD)
"Nuzzles, pounces on you, UwU you're so warm. Couldn't help but notice your bulge from across the floor." - Senzawa. Take this in whatever way you see it as.
Very interesting video. I thought the bulges were for stabilization when firing perpendicular to the keel. Would have never thought about torpedo protection! Great stuff. Learned something today. 👍🏻
Funniest part is the animation of the HMS Hood dropping depth charges on a sub. No battleship nor most cruisers, for that matter, carried depth charges. Only destroyers, destroyer escorts, sloops, frigates, corvettes and sub-chasers were equipped with anti-submarine weapons. By and by, another great upload gentlemen! Cheers!
I literally woke up, checked youtube, and clicked this so fast. Got a history final today. While I doubt we’ll need to know about ship bulges, I absolutely adore watching these videos every chance I can!
Indeed, and during World War 2 torpedoes were starting to use magnetic fuses that would detonate when under the target vessel. Meant the bulges became less and less effective as the torpedoes became more and more advanced. It was less about protecting the sides and more about making sure they never even got under you. Surprised the video didn't mention that part because the shift in tactics was due to the change in how torpedoes killed you.
@@kleinerfarmer1 Sorry, you're right. I knew something was magnetic and it detonated the warhead on the torpedo at the right time so used that wording XD
You also forgot to add in the fact that when torpedoes with reliable magnetic detonators we're being used, the torpedo would detonate underneath the Hull of the ship. This made torpedo bulges and armored belts obsolete when it came to torpedoes, since the Giant Gas bubble form underneath the whole would cause the whole to crack open
Those, my dear friends, are called torpedo bulges. They are a layer of material that theoretically detonated the torpedo at a distance far enough away from the main armor that most of the shaped charge explosives lost effectiveness, or the explosion in general lost its effectiveness against the citadel of the ship. Torpedoes were ship killers because they blasted a huge hole into the citadel of the ship. Those bulges detonated the torpedo before it could reache the inner layer of armor of the ship and make a giant hole the size of the Bismark.
one thing they failed to mention is that by ww2 torps did not have to be direct hits to kill or badly damage a warship. the proximity fuse allowed the torps to detonate under the ship causing far more significant damage. this also obsoleted torpedo belts and bulges as they did not protect the bottom of the ship
A few days ago I watched 'The Courier'. It was a really interesting movie based on a real story. It would be cool to see an episode of Simple History about Greville Wynne and what he did.
I had the privilege of touring the U.S.S. Texas in dry dock in Galveston this past month. The corroded torpedo bulges are being replaced, along with repair and replacement of other hull plating. The astonishing thing is that the bulges installed during the 1925 refit were riveted. This meant drilling a whole lot of holes into the hull plating and riveting the outer framing and plating inside of very, very constricted spaces. The dry dock has a pile of scrap including sections of the old bulge plugged with foam and concrete to stop leaks. The ship will be in excellent condition when it is reflected. It is the last super dreadnaught in the world and a remarkable monument to naval technology and early 20th century shipbuilding.
Well, there is another reason why torpedo belts went out of fashion. Torpedoes later in the war were often fitted with magnetic incidence fuzes, that would detect the magnetic hull of a ship. These could be fired under the ships keel and be made to explode there, instead of the impact fuzes on earlier torpedoes. Doing this they bypassed the torpedo protection belt and this type of torpedo attack could also break the keel of the ship, causing much more widespread and severe damage than an impact fuze torpedo could ever hope to do. All modern torpedoes are now built in such a way as to explode under the keel of the target, thereby negating any type of tropedo protection belt.
They are termed 'stabilizers' and they assist in countering the enormous recoil of a bank of 16 inch naval guns firing a broadside simultaneously(the recoil was known to force a 60,000 ton plus warship three feet back). The ship stands a chance of recoiling into a capsize without them. Navy ships are smaller today and have a minimum of heavy technology and lighter weaponry in the gun department.
You forgot to mention, Torpedo bulges, in some cases were also used to store fuel. This was a trick the brittish used with regards to weight and volume limitations of the navel treaties. Since fuel and fuel tanks weren't counted in the weight/usable volume, the UK would "justify" it. and comically, in some cases even when fuel tanks weren't included in the torpedo bulges, the britts still "calculated" them as if they were.
