- I was strongly riding the Furyu high after adoring last year's Caligula 2, and it seemed like Monark would be a home run for me! Unfortunately, it was not. I hope to do my best breaking down why exactly it didn't land in this "review". Yes, I talk about THAT too.

Enjoyed this review a lot, a big step up with the opening skit. I was very eager to play this game but it seems like they couldn't stick the landing. Or even come close to it at all...
Also one of your funniest videos yet while only having a handful of jokes as you clearly wanted to be very informative but they all stuck IMO!!!!

I need to go back to it, I'm just bummed that while getting footage for the PC version I found out that the port sucked. I don't really want to have to bust out a vita just to do a replay, huge bummer.

that was a great video! though it gave me flashbacks about Crystar. it looks like both it and Monark have the similar problems, but Crystar translates it to button mashing when grinding lol

@@Screwy definitely a better solution than playing the god awful PC port I downloaded for that bit of footage. It's wild how bad it is
I love Crystar and Crymachina (Hayashi's most popular games) but I always have mixed feelings regarding playing this game. The story/lore is interesting and it definitely seems to have kino moments, but the gameplay being so weird and unbalanced puts me off a bit. It would probably benefit from a remaster that fixes the issues with repetitiveness and combat, and maybe some light rewrites. (Such as the problematic content, which tbf, was probably put in by the NPC writers)
I bought the $100 limited edition a while ago and it’s been sitting on my shelf collecting dust, because I was waiting for somebody to really give me an honest review on it. Thank you for this, I will now sell my copy of the game
You should have pirate the game and played with cheat engine, the story is great. The soundtrack is great. Sell the game.
It's weird that the game has "transphobic" content considering the same writer did Crymachina (which has really respectful and well done lesbian relationships and romance). Maybe it was the other writers like some have mentioned earlier?
@teru.751 yeah chance is one of the two other writers did it. I wanted to check our crymachina, and I liked the demo, but I was weary. I'll probably grab it next time it goes on sale, glad to hear it's an improvement!
I forgot this game even existed. I think I hyper focused Legend of Heroes along with Ys when it came out and just never bothered to acknowledge it existed after going through all of the Kiseki titles.
Probably for the best haha. I'm looking forward to the english release of Hajimari next year :O!
I remember being really interested on this when it was announced, only to be disappointed when finding out that the story and characters feel kinda... Soulless.
I feel like the game trying to market itself as a successor to SMT If ended up backfiring a bit, not to mention that SMT If by itself is also a bit of a "Love It Or Hate It"-type of game.
Okay so on the part about Fuyuki Hayashi getting some former SMT If staff members to work in Monark... Among them, if I remember correctly. Wasnt exactly a former SMT If staff member... But rather... Aya Nishitani. The guy who created the original Digital Devil Story novels that started Megaten as a whole...
...And those novels ALSO have a sense Edge that can rub off the wrong way, though. Rather than a "Dull" kind of Edge. It can range from a "Uncomfortable" kind of Edge. To one that that I can only describe as nonsensical.
...Okay, so. You said that didnt mean to throw shade at Hayashi...
But the whole hypocrisy of the game to try to evoke sympathy for the villains, yet treats Perrine as a joke!? I feel like all of the writers deserve a punch to the face for that.
Not to sound ignorant but, what kind of game is Ever Grace when you were making that joke that music and art arent enough to carry a game? Because this is the first time I have ever heard of Ever Grace.
...Well, this video certainly ended on a sour note. I feel like a good enough Fanfiction writer could make a rewrite of this story that actually does it justice.
Or maybe something like an official manga adaptation or novel.
I was so unsure about whether to get this game or not. I'm also a big Caligula Effect fan so interesting jank is right up my alley.
But yeah I don't think I have to play it when it's super grindy (tragically I am a working adult with not much energy now) and has transphobia.
Especially after Caligula Effect 2 I don't need to settle for less now.
My Switch visual novel backlog will keep be busy anyway. Looking forward to playing Chaos;Head this year! (but first a lot of otome games shall suffocate me)
I think the grind was made so much work for me as a working adult as well!!! I have a full time job, a part time freelance writing gig, a social life, and a youtube channel with a huge backlog of games I want to cover while keeping a schedule. When I hit a wall that needs me to grind, I can't help but feel my time is being wasted
@@culIen that's the problem with switch games sadly. You cannot mod or cheat to skip the grinding part... Repetitive gameplay should not exist in the first place

Sincerely appreciate the open discussion about how the game's phobic outlook on trans people hurts the overall game at large, not just because it's bad, but because it completely contradicts what the core writing is trying to say. I really hope more people will start pointing out this kind of thing in media, since it's far too common for my taste. All in all though, solid review. I played the demo and thought it was really neat, but it seems I dodged a bullet here with not buying the full game.
To be fair, the transphobic content probably was by the other writers since they were in charge of NPC dialogue, Hayashi just wrote the scenario.
I admit that I hadn't heard of Monark until you started mentioning the issues it had on Twitter. This review solidifies the fact that I do not seem to be missing out on it
I am hoping that Loopers is good, though, since that just came out in English and I am interested in it
Loopers is cute, but it seems like it's a bit short (I'm 2-3 hours in and it says I'm 33% done). So if money is an issue, maybe wait for a sale unless you're craving more r07.

I know this game is pretty low budget but the models look really awful. I don’t remember how good Caligula 2 looked but that game also had a lot of style in its visuals which this just doesn’t seem to
I honestly think the models themselves in Monark are much higher quality than Caligula 2. Caligula 2 had such a strong art style and lighting enginge that they don't really seem as bad as they are. Monark's lighting I'd bland, so it makes the solid models just look kinda ehhh

I have to wonder what the localisation team thought about the transphobic text - it looks like it's just flavour text so could have easily been removed or reworded or just changed for the good of a Western audience.
It's a weird situation because imo the bulk of the criticism should really be going to the people who wrote it in the first place. There is also something to be said about there being NO statement on it period, not the best look, so it's kind of just messy no matter what. Disappointed.
I really wanted to like this game because I enjoyed Caligula 2, but didn’t know about the transphobia and monotony of the gameplay until it was too late and I’d already shelled out 60$. It makes me sad that a game that could’ve been really good was mishandled in such a way. The one thing I can say is that I like the art? Some character designs are nice? That’s kinda it for me. You hit the nail on the head in your vid imo.

Apart from the great looking character sprites, I don't remember much about it, just that to me it felt like persona but dark drab and boring.
It wasn't completely unredeemable but man did it give me the feeling of "don't waste your time on this, there are much better edgy stories for you to get into than this"

How is that transphobic it says the characters is in the honor role and gets upset when they are missed gender. I believe most transgender people would be upset if they got missed gender or called my there birth name ( if they change their name to being with )
I'm going to assume this is in good faith and respond earnestly. Regardless of your intent, please listen to me with an open mind.
The text itself, as written from the perspective of the narrator/writer (which is not shown to be unreliable in the context of the story, meaning this is the perspective we are supposed to trust as correct), deadnames and misgenders her. Obviously trans people do not like this to happen to them, but its the way the text is written that matters because it relays the intent of the writer.
There were a lot of ways they could have handled this much better, and implying she's a boy playing pretend and then listing her deadname is not it. This is not how trans people typically wish to be portrayed in media. For example, Swery got a lot of flak from the trans community for a similar portrayal of a trans character in Deadly Premonition 2. When it comes to what offends a marginalized group, it's best to listen to the general consensus of that group to be informed on what is or is not offensive. My trans friends and colleagues all generally consider this to be pretty bad, and I listen to their input on why they think that.
Even if I were to believe that the intent was to show that she didn't like it (which again, is obvious), the writer did not know how to convey that without being transphobic. Worse case, it's dismissive, gross, and really mean. Best case, it's fumbled yet ignorant and still transphobic. So no matter what, the writers can learn and do better. Especially if they wish to present trans characters in a positive light and don't want them to be the punchline of jokes, and in that case they should bring in trans people to the writing room.

Not trying to be a troll here and I enjoy the review it just seems like something that is really not a big issue. Also maybe it's just a cross dresser who isn't even trans alot of Japanese media have cross dressers in them and they aren't always meant to be seen as trans characters
@@nekonekopanicnekonekopanic7335 Well, again, it's up to the community themselves to decide what is or is not a big issue. Just because it does not offend you, doesn't mean it is not offensive to them. It can be hard for people who don't have those life experiences to truly understand why they'd feel as they do. This is why I default to just sympathesizing and listening to why they are upset when things like this happen. Trans people I know who are even aware of this game's existence this have found it to be annoying or offensive, that's just the general consensus.
Lastly, in the context of the story provided to the character she is clearly meant to be a trans girl. She goes by She/Her pronouns and even refuses to be referred to by her birthname. They writers might not have said it explicitly, but the intent was there and the subtext is pretty obviously meant to convey that the character is trans. But, even if she was a cross dresser, it's still not presented in the best light. It could be better, that's my point.

It’s baffling this game came from the same dude who made Crystar. Crystar had some pretty bad gameplay but I can at least say it had a good story and soul. Shame that good writing wasn’t present in Monark
I like this game because I spent 0 hour grinding. (By using cheats) I think it's best if you rate the game based on the story rather than gameplay. Because it's just like crystar. The gameplay suck donkey ass. As we age, it is getting harder to feel safisfaction while playing video games due to our responsibilities. Some of us just want to be someone that we are not, or view into someone's world(So to view into all these victims souls are kind of exciting?). Therefore, I can't really relate to your rant. :/ I mean, you spent the money but the game is so boring. That must have sucked, should've bought the game on PC so you could modify the stats and just enjoy the story.
I think if you need to use cheats to make a game good, like you did, then that's just kind of proving my criticisms about the gameplay. You can value specific things in a game, like story over gameplay (and I typically do) but neither worked for me. I didn't like the story, and the gameplay on offer was lacking.
If console players are given a faulty experience, that's not something I can ignore. "Just get it on PC so you can cheat" is just not a good argument and lowkey an insult to people who bought the game elsewhere. I'm glad you were happy enough with your solution, but that doesn't mean criticism against the product they sold shouldn't exist. Cheating is not a bad thing, there's nothing wrong with needing to take shortcuts in the favor of accessibility, but those kinds of things should be available to every player. The game is seriously lacking those options of accessibility, and if there was difficulty select options that segment would have been written differently.
Hmm, well, valid points 😭 It sucks that they included transphobic characters(Looking at Shinya and Perrine. Crystar never had that). This is why the game failed I guess. Too much hassle to grind levels, boring gameplay. The story is not for everyone, I wasn't sure what they were going for, edgey or not edgey? Like you said. It's a very dull edge. But it's quite surprising that you liked Valkyria Chronicles 4 when the game also require mindless grinding. It's tedious but not as tedious as this game, obviously.
@@angelwater8987 I think I've thought less and less about that game has time has gone by, but I think the gameplay itself had a lot more going on with it and the level variety was pretty solid. Idk if I'd like it nearly as much if I revisited it though, that was years ago and I frequently forget that game existed haha
