Thanks. I know about birds but I don't know much about photography so that is the natural thing for me to do really. Also, I hope to spark an interest in birds in others. Not just birdwatchers but people who may not have really thought much about birds before.
These Avocet are similar with our American Avocets here in Florida. This wetland looks impressive with all kinds of shorebirds. I love Lapwings calls, it reminds me a spring in Estonia where I was growing up.
I'll be in London in May and the birding is the part I am most looking forward to. Thank you for posting this video! I haven't found too many other resources that talk about where to see birds in London. This is a gem!
Probably the best place is RSPB Rainham Marsh on the opposite side of the Thames from Dartford & Crayford. Dagenham Chase can be quite nice too which is not too far away from Rainham.
A terrific video Nick .Is 7:30 cet and just finished watching Fabulous ..It's great how birds are coming back and enjoying life in marshes .near to former industrial spots..Super filming.of a star studded cast : Please can you recommend a good pair of binoculars ( not too heavy )..Now must get ready as have to cross a very cold city .Not to worry have had a wonderful start to the day with your video .👍👏🏻.All the best , Helena
Thank you. I'm not sure what you meant about 7.30. The very best binoculars are Swarovski but they are also very very expensive. A good cheap pair are made by Olympus and they do 8x 40 and 10x42. Both are about $100-150 and very good for the price. A step up are the ones in the RSPB shop. I use a pair of their 10x42 and they are very good. The really small binoculars are very poor as they have very narrow fields of view, making it hard to find birds and letting little light in. 8x40 are good for beginners while 10x42 give you more range but make finding birds jumping around in trees a little harder to do. For real beginners I would always recommend 8x40. Enjoy the cold. Things are getting hotter and hotter here in Bangkok. 34C every day now and climbing every week.
Cool Nick. So many species have made a comeback - great film. Love the Avocets - my three year old Grandson told me out of the blue what an Avocet looks like 😀 Such a shame that others are in sharp decline
That's really great that your grandson knows about avocets. They really are a bird that can capture the imagination. It is sad that so many birds are in decline and sometimes it makes me feel a bit hopeless but the success of avocets should tell us that we can reverse those declines.
Thanks. For Dartford Marsh you can drive down Joyce Green Lane and park near the gate near the end (making sure you don't block access). For Crayford Marsh find somewhere in Hazel Road to park and walk in.
I enjoyed this video, thanks Nick! I recently bought a DSLR and have been enjoying taking wildlife pictures. Which lens and focal length did you shoot at? Also any tips for places to park?
Sorry for the slow answer. I use a Canon 7D Mk II and Canon 100-400 Mk II lens for photography and some of the video. Much of the video is shot on an old Lumix FZ330 bridge camera which has finally broken down and I need to buy something new soon. For Dartford Marsh you can drive down Joyce Green Lane and park at the gate near the end. For Crayford Marsh find somewhere in Hazel Road to park and walk in. Should be good for Cuckoo in a few weeks time.

Absolutely great birding trip! I never thought River Thames is that very rich in birdlife. The calls of birds is exciting! Thank you for sharing
Absolutely, I was surprised too with how many species I was able to find there.
Great video! I love that your content is about the birds, not about how you photograph them. Thank you!

Combination of Chris packham and David Attenborough. Very good video
Thank you for such a kind comment.
Great video of lots of different speacees 😃👍
Thanks, amazing how many there were locally.
Saw my first pintails the other day. Chew Magna lakes, Somerset. Pair of males, very handsome. Nice work, Nick.
That's great, Pintails are really handsome ducks. I'm still waiting for them at Dartford and Crayford marshes but maybe one day.
