Thank you, that is a lovely comment. I was lucky enough to go to school at Wilmington and my French teacher used to take us out on bird watching trips. The idea that kids in Dartford today could benefit from watching my video is a very nice one.
Hi Nick. Wonderful survey of your local patch. The rhythm of the seasons, knowing when and where to look. Nothing beats spotting a good bird on the home patch.
You are right Clive, local patch birding can be the most rewarding. I have been birding this spot for over 40 years and to find new birds for it last winter was a real thrill.
Wonderful video, Nick, as always. While us birders love seeing new birds, there's something wonderful about the haunts you've known over the years, the familiarity of your favorite places, and the birds therein. I'm lucky to have a few; where I grew up (Minnesota), where I went to grad school (Tucson), and now northern Arizona. I am growing ever more appreciative of our most common every-day birds, they're like old friends. Thank you for reminding me of the wonders in our own back yards.
Thanks for that nice comment. Indeed, it is nice to be able to get to know a place and its birds. I even enjoy that when I travel overseas; I like to return to the same or nearby places and really get a "feel" for the birds and the place. I feel the same as you in that many of these familiar birds feel like old friends. Certainly this winter I have become reaquainted with many of them as well as adding new ones.
Thanks. Yes, I am lucky to have grown up near such a place. As you say, mixed habitats is always the key to seeing a lot of different species of birds.
Another fantastic video Nick with so many wonderful birds .Have to say I like them all but geese I've a soft spot for .We have few Canada Geese in Berlin but where I was born in Manchester they are abundant .(My main reason for visiting there) .Grebe are so chic and think I told you once I refer to them as the Avian Audrey Hepburn... Basically all birds are amazing .Never met a nasty tempered bird lover ...One thing the current world wide health situation has shown is the value of nature and it's protection ..Thanks Nick and keep on being the best British birder I know :) 👍
Absolutely, if this situation doesn't show people that we need nature then nothing will. Unfortunately having trashed the economy the UK government seems to think that we should stimulate economic recovery by trashing the environment and just build over everything while at the same time removing the right to protest against such developments. And thanks for the compliment, although maybe I'm the only British birder you know. Hehehe. All the best Helena.

Cool, most of the waterbirds were videoed at Brooklands lakes. The rest of the video was along the valley from Dartford to Shoreham. The watercress beds are at Sutton-at-Hone.
Hi Nick, thanks for a great video. I often walk up the stretch of the Darent from Shoreham to Lullingstone with my binoculars but I have never noticed your favourite watercress birding spot. Is it further up towards Eynsford? Water Rails are my bogey bird. I have sat for hours at Oare where people often see them with no luck! Would love to find somewhere more local to try.
The cress beds are at Sutton-at-Hone. They are not easy to see but they are always there at a couple of spots. If you need any help I can meet you down there - nickupton@thaibirding.com
Đẹp quá ! Các loài chim , vịt , ngỗng ....đều rất đẹp , và dễ thương ! Phong cảnh cũng rất đẹp , thật tuyệt ! 🙂💖
Yes, the birds are beautiful, cute too. Thanks for your comment, and thanks for Google translate.
Beautiful place to watch birds
It is indeed, thanks for watching.
All local schools in Dartford should show this video to their students. It would help the students learn about their local areas and wildlife.

The Darent Valley is in Kent, Southeast England.
Birding for 40 years??!! I was shocked, you don’t look a day older than 25
Hahaha, there are no prizes for the nicest comment you know.
