Mick's guitar playing gave the Stones an element they never had before, nor since. His album with Mark Knopler on Dylan's Infidels made it a fantastic piece of work.
The stones have never had a guitar virtuoso like mick taylor. He single handedly raised the level of musicianship to a higher degree for the stones. They've never been the same since he left.

Awesome guitar talent. I did get get to see him live in a small venue. Am grateful for the experience. He is right, you never know. I am 71 and still pick up a dozen or so gigs per year, in a bar band.
One of the finest guitarists for me, of my generation. Born 1954. He made a wonderful contribution to the Stones & they gave him the most perfect platform for his talent. Love the Stones forever & Taylor too.

I saw the Stones twice with Mick Taylor, '69 and '72. To this day, I recall being awed during the '72 show as Mick Taylor played an extended solo on "You Can't Always Get What You Want." To this day, I love the way he plays. Such a melodic, sensitive style, but he can also rip it when the song calls for it.
Brian Jones was the best multi instrumentalists in the stones by a country mile ...thats why all their early stuff was the most successful and memorable.

Loved the tone and sustain Mick Taylor always made. I was always envious of his melodic gifts on his guitar. Saw him as a solo artist in Long Beach in the early 80s.

Love it , I think i will still be a successful guitar player if nothing else, shit i almost fell off the chair laughing. Mick you're one of the best in rock history & have held that since the 60's & you will always hold that title long after you're gone. An amazingly gifted man.
Mick Taylor was definitely the best instrumental musician the Stones ever had. I love his dynamic guitar solos in can't you hear me knocking and time waits for no one etc.
M taylor was a true guitar virtuoso. Of course i would have wanted him to stay with the stones but the stones were passed their prime, it was a highly toxic environment and taylor's creativity wasn't being recognized. He did the right thing by leaving the stones. Much respect for this guy.

I know it been said, but he is a great guitarist. Has a magic touch to his playing. Listen to him on John Mayalls 70th birthday gig which is available on dvd and CD. I was also very lucky to meet him in Auckland NZ and he was a very unassuming fellow. No airs or graces.

My favorite Rolling Stones years are those with Mick Taylor.. even though, I really like the pre-Taylor years, as well. Lots of wonderful music throughout the existence of the Rolling Stones.
Mick always brings his sound influence to what ever music hes playing , or who he plays with, not over bearing ,.just interwoven with in the music itself, jack Bruce, bob Dylan, blues breakers, the stones, and more, he mentioned bob dylan infidels , he added alot , and mark knopfler, as well, to that album, great album from bob dylan, as well as all the rest, mick taylor is one of my all time favorite guitar players and want to see him play at.least once ,if I can.
I try to play guitar. I'll never be any good at it but I have fun. If I could snap my fingers and suddenly be able to play like anyone, it would be this guy ! His solo on "Sympathy" off the YaYa's album is just....phenomenal . To me .
DrHogfan that solo from midnight rambler for the first lead guitar licks I was always trying to learn from now get your Yaya‘s out. After 50 years of playing oboe in 40 years of playing guitar sometimes I can play like it like Taylor. Saw him as guest at the Oracle in Oakland 2013 plying Midnight Rambler, The night after my piano playing dad passed away.
Yeah Dr. Hogfan were two pease in a pod in that way, I'm probably the worst guitarist to ever pick one up. But after about forty or so years of trying I can't stop now.....hell I might get better someday. It is alot of fun regardless.
Most underrated guitar player ever a real genius when it came to melodic soloing check out some of his work on Bob Dylan Real Live and Carla Olson and Mick Taylor Too Hot for Snakes the versions of Sway and Winter Out and that's not even mentioned what he did for the Stones he unilateraly with Bobby Keys totally transformed their sound and none got the least of credit, out of this world unmatched !!! And he can't fill a medium size club with his band.
Mick made it best Stones era period. Ronnie Wood , whom i love, was at his best with Rod Stewart. Micks 1st solo lp was great, my favorite and in my playlist still today...the song Leather jacket. Great song!....And Ronnie's Ive got my own album to do is my favorite of all his solo work.
The Stones golden period from Let it Bleed, Exile and Sticky Fingers .. through to a few golden moments on Its Only Rock and Roll owes so much to MT’s playing.... the ancient of of weaving with Ronnie never came close to the guitar separation and chemistry of Keith and MT!!!
YES! Keef should have left that stupid weaving to the carpet-makers. As much as I love what KR has given us, his limitations as a true soloist PLUS his ego, have led him to “hiding” within the cocoon of blending with Ronnie. MT pushed him to the next level, but long-term, Keith couldn’t deal with being the 2nd guitarist in any shape or form.
Superb period but Aftermath remains their best album, Beggar's Banquet their second best followed by Bleed. Versatile but surly Brian Jones input was crucial to their success. The orchestration in the two albums I mention is incredible.
Since Ron Wood was with the Stones when I saw them, I felt I owed it to myself to see Taylor and his band. I knew it would be great. I am taking the time to post this - Mick Taylor was the best jazz player I ever saw, including Pastorius and McLaughlin. (Personal bias, but also accurate)
Keith Richards started Moonlight Mile. Mick Jagger and Mick Taylor basically finished writing it they should have given him a credit for it along with a few others just for his solos alone. He's got to be 70 years old by now. successful is putting it mildly some of his solos are right up there with Eric Clapton and Hendrix
today i realized that the reason I like the stones came from the recordings that he did with them. those are the ones that make me listen and feel it. now i know it was his playing.

I think he left to avoid ending up like Brian. If the Jagger/Richards dynamo could overcome the group's founder and best musician, then a shy, quiet guy like Mick wasn't safe either.
The Rolling Stones reached a creative peak when Mick Taylor was in the band. Some of their very best albums are undoubtedly with him. Once he left, the creativity & quality of their music steadily declined. That speaks volumes. Just wish he'd stayed with the band a lot longer, despite not getting the credit he deserved for his huge contribution to a number of songs. A brilliant guitarist!
@@metallion0738 There are of course some great songs on a number of VG Rolling Stones LPs made after Taylor's departure. But note: Mick Taylor (though uncredited) plays on at least 2 tracks on Tattoo You. "Tops" & "Waiting on a Friend". Both songs from the Goats Head Soup sessions. Taylor later demanded & received added royalties. Ronnie Wood offers a sympathetic, note-perfect synchronicity to Keith's guitar playing that works very well. That's especially apparent in their live performances. I can't imagine many other guitar players reaching that higher level of musical understanding. But the band's overall creativity has never quite reached the peaks of the Taylor era. That Taylor brought something very different to the band's development is apparent from his contributions. I like Ronnie. But in fairness, I think much of his playing style is a bit too similar to Keith's. There again, Mick Taylor was one of the very best guitarists of any generation.

@@Abebe345 Indeed. I've often wondered how their music might have evolved if Mick Taylor hadn't left? Going by interviews, his influence wasn't slight. MT described one example. Around 1973, he & Mick Jagger experimented with a (then) new song, "Time Waits for No One". Taylor's lead guitar is quite outstanding. Just two of them in a room. Only later, Keith added his guitar. Song-writing credits went, as usual, to Jagger/Richards. MT cited other similar examples. All great bands continue evolving. The Rolling Stones no less. But Mick Taylor's influence seems very evident, as was Brian Jones's previously.
@@kanashiimurakamisan I think we disagree here a bit. Mick and Keith have stayed dedicated to the sound they developed in the sixties imo even when Brian was in the band. They had a definite approach which they have never strayed from which probably lead to creative tensions with Brian. MT doesn't strike me as not wanting to dominate and sometimes his playing wasn't getting the feel of the music and he was playing over Jaggers vocals and out of sync with the other instruments. However, often he found the feel and was adding some beautiful playing while syncing with the band. He was never going to be lead and Keith just rhythm because a lot of the potency comes from Keith and it needed to be worked. This is where I wish MT had decided to become a Stone, understand what they were trying to do, and add his prodigious talents to the craft, but it looks like it was too much compromise in MT's eyes and he may have thought he would do better in another group. Mick Taylor could learn a lot from Keith as well about feel, less is more, and a different style. I think if both dedicAted themselves to this kind of partnership the result could have developed into something sublime. But in the end, to me, MT stayed his own man and that direction didn't develop imo. Sorry long winded.
Saw an interesting Stones doco the other day where Keith was paying great tribute to Mick Taylor’s guitar playing skill. He basically said “I let Mick play most of the lead as he is so good, while I sat back and grooved on my riffs”. Keith gave the impression he really enjoyed having Mick in the band... it definitely took them to a different level musically.
The Mick Taylor years were the best years of the Rolling Stones. When Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stone they were many things going on, yes he needed a break from the drugs but to leave the band was a mistake. I do believe at 24(?) he made that decision as a 24 yr. old and not as an adult. He was unhappy because he didn't get credit for a few songs. He should of stayed. I saw an interview with Keith Richards in 2015. Keith said he wish Mick would of stayed on after their '50th ' tour making the Stones a 3 guitar band. What ever happened to that?
I cant see Jageer into that scene.My perception was always that Taylor being so fucking good was stealing Jaggers limelight.Jagger tried to ditch the stones in the 80s.He wanted to be as big as michael jackson.But Jaggers idea of going solo was playing Stones songs without the Stones.We all know how well his solo career went.

Ajax7925 maybe the most profitable but I was a Stones fan from Tell Me in 1964 and when Brian left I no longer liked them as much. I don’t care for Angie and wild horses and stuff like that. Beggars Banquet was my last favorite album by them. They just didn’t seem like the Stones anymore after Brian. I liked a song here and there but it was different.
Those who think Mick Taylor was the best Stones guitarist may be right. But I think the way Keith and Ronnie blend those choppy rhythm guitars is their very best sound. When Taylor was playing with the Stones they were more Blues oriented, which I loved! But when he left they became whatever was popular at the time. Disco, really! They’ve never recovered!
I love MT, but the greatest thing to happen to the Stones was Andrew Loog Oldham locking Mick and Keith in the kitchen demanding they come out with a song.
What this man did at the tender age of 17 with the Rolling Stones is world shattering. He did more in just a few years than most guitarists do in a lifetime to solidify his legendary status.
I know they put out some great Rolling Stones classics when Mick Taylor was still active with them. I still listen to a lot of the vintage stuff, it really hits home
The Stones surely benefited from his guitar playing, but most important was that Jagger and Richards were peaking as a songwriting duo, for a couple of years. The band's playing, the recording techniques and equipment also became much more pro around the time Taylor joined.

Talented but difficult man. His time with The Stones was the last great era of the band and one of the greatest runs of musical quality in all of music.

I have Bob Dylan’s Infidels album and I knew Mark Knoplfer and some other pretty famous people played on it but I had no idea MT was involved. Have to drag it out and have another listen now.
I think most Stones fan would agree, but Ronnie Wood was a great replacement and his personality and stage presence was and still is proof of that. Actually, it’s not fair to compare other guitarists to Taylor outside of Hendricks, Page etc. Taylor is such a humble and intelligent man for a virtuoso guitarist.

I saw him about 10 years ago playing at a small club, to my surprise he spoke to me and a friend at the bar after , he said he wrote quite a few of the stones songs but was never allowed to have his name on the credits ! It had to be Jagger Richards , Bill wyman said the same in his book, Keith Richards wasn’t that stoned that he knew he was ripping off bandmates the music business is all about £££££
I wonder how many of the hits attributed to the greats have really been penned by them? They usually have some bullshit story about how they came up with the song -- like Paul McCartney and Paperback Writer: me aunt said why do you always write love songs can't you write other ones? -- but given the financial disparity between the big names and non-entities it makes sense that the latter would sell their wares and keep their mouths shut.
@@aoeulhs As someone who works in the film business, when it comes to artists and money, they can get quite insecure and protective about their interests and do shady things, which of course makes it easy for the sharks and vultures to come in and exploit that.
Same with Brian Jones who deserved credit on several great Stones songs. That's one thing I find difficult to overlook... their greed and dishonesty plus lack of respect for bandmates. Mick Taylor was amazing and one of the greatest guitarists ever!
I love his guitar playing and he was with the Stones during their best period. That said, I don't really feel all that bad for him that he apparently is almost broke. He left a great gig on his own decision with nothing else lined up. Basically did nothing of note after he left the band. One of the reasons he left was because he said drug abuse in the band was bad but then he pissed through his Stones money buying drugs with it. He never did anything to clean up. He complains that he gets shafted from getting any royalties for the albums he played on(which I agree he should get) but has never taken any legal action to try and fight for it....though I know the Stones likely can afford much better lawyers...he still never took any action. He made his own bed by leaving the best gig.
The Rolling Stones have proved to sound like the Rolling Stones without Keith on guitar. . There are enough songs to fill an album for that. Thanks to Jagger and Taylor.
One of his complaints was that a lot of his best guitar work never made it onto albums - both studio and live performances. That plus writing credit snubs made it a very frustrating situation for him.

Mick Taylor was definitely the best instrumental musician the Stones ever had. I love his dynamic guitar solos in can't you hear me knocking and time waits for no one etc.

M taylor was a true guitar virtuoso. Of course i would have wanted him to stay with the stones but the stones were passed their prime, it was a highly toxic environment and taylor's creativity wasn't being recognized. He did the right thing by leaving the stones. Much respect for this guy.

I know it been said, but he is a great guitarist. Has a magic touch to his playing. Listen to him on John Mayalls 70th birthday gig which is available on dvd and CD. I was also very lucky to meet him in Auckland NZ and he was a very unassuming fellow. No airs or graces.

My favorite Rolling Stones years are those with Mick Taylor.. even though, I really like the pre-Taylor years, as well. Lots of wonderful music throughout the existence of the Rolling Stones.
Mick always brings his sound influence to what ever music hes playing , or who he plays with, not over bearing ,.just interwoven with in the music itself, jack Bruce, bob Dylan, blues breakers, the stones, and more, he mentioned bob dylan infidels , he added alot , and mark knopfler, as well, to that album, great album from bob dylan, as well as all the rest, mick taylor is one of my all time favorite guitar players and want to see him play at.least once ,if I can.
I try to play guitar. I'll never be any good at it but I have fun. If I could snap my fingers and suddenly be able to play like anyone, it would be this guy ! His solo on "Sympathy" off the YaYa's album is just....phenomenal . To me .
DrHogfan that solo from midnight rambler for the first lead guitar licks I was always trying to learn from now get your Yaya‘s out. After 50 years of playing oboe in 40 years of playing guitar sometimes I can play like it like Taylor. Saw him as guest at the Oracle in Oakland 2013 plying Midnight Rambler, The night after my piano playing dad passed away.
Actually Keith played the first part of that lead, then Taylor came in on the second part of symphony on ya ya's

Yeah Dr. Hogfan were two pease in a pod in that way, I'm probably the worst guitarist to ever pick one up. But after about forty or so years of trying I can't stop now.....hell I might get better someday. It is alot of fun regardless.

Most underrated guitar player ever a real genius when it came to melodic soloing check out some of his work on Bob Dylan Real Live and Carla Olson and Mick Taylor Too Hot for Snakes the versions of Sway and Winter Out and that's not even mentioned what he did for the Stones he unilateraly with Bobby Keys totally transformed their sound and none got the least of credit, out of this world unmatched !!! And he can't fill a medium size club with his band.

Mick made it best Stones era period. Ronnie Wood , whom i love, was at his best with Rod Stewart. Micks 1st solo lp was great, my favorite and in my playlist still today...the song Leather jacket. Great song!....And Ronnie's Ive got my own album to do is my favorite of all his solo work.
With Ronnie the Stones came out with Black and Blue, Some girls, Emotional rescue and Tattoo you, not bad at all in my humble opinion.
The Stones golden period from Let it Bleed, Exile and Sticky Fingers .. through to a few golden moments on Its Only Rock and Roll owes so much to MT’s playing.... the ancient of of weaving with Ronnie never came close to the guitar separation and chemistry of Keith and MT!!!
YES! Keef should have left that stupid weaving to the carpet-makers. As much as I love what KR has given us, his limitations as a true soloist PLUS his ego, have led him to “hiding” within the cocoon of blending with Ronnie. MT pushed him to the next level, but long-term, Keith couldn’t deal with being the 2nd guitarist in any shape or form.
Superb period but Aftermath remains their best album, Beggar's Banquet their second best followed by Bleed. Versatile but surly Brian Jones input was crucial to their success. The orchestration in the two albums I mention is incredible.

Since Ron Wood was with the Stones when I saw them, I felt I owed it to myself to see Taylor and his band. I knew it would be great. I am taking the time to post this - Mick Taylor was the best jazz player I ever saw, including Pastorius and McLaughlin. (Personal bias, but also accurate)
Keith Richards started Moonlight Mile. Mick Jagger and Mick Taylor basically finished writing it they should have given him a credit for it along with a few others just for his solos alone. He's got to be 70 years old by now. successful is putting it mildly some of his solos are right up there with Eric Clapton and Hendrix

I think he left to avoid ending up like Brian. If the Jagger/Richards dynamo could overcome the group's founder and best musician, then a shy, quiet guy like Mick wasn't safe either.
The Rolling Stones reached a creative peak when Mick Taylor was in the band. Some of their very best albums are undoubtedly with him. Once he left, the creativity & quality of their music steadily declined. That speaks volumes. Just wish he'd stayed with the band a lot longer, despite not getting the credit he deserved for his huge contribution to a number of songs. A brilliant guitarist!

@@metallion0738 There are of course some great songs on a number of VG Rolling Stones LPs made after Taylor's departure. But note: Mick Taylor (though uncredited) plays on at least 2 tracks on Tattoo You. "Tops" & "Waiting on a Friend". Both songs from the Goats Head Soup sessions. Taylor later demanded & received added royalties.
Ronnie Wood offers a sympathetic, note-perfect synchronicity to Keith's guitar playing that works very well. That's especially apparent in their live performances. I can't imagine many other guitar players reaching that higher level of musical understanding. But the band's overall creativity has never quite reached the peaks of the Taylor era. That Taylor brought something very different to the band's development is apparent from his contributions.
I like Ronnie. But in fairness, I think much of his playing style is a bit too similar to Keith's. There again, Mick Taylor was one of the very best guitarists of any generation.

@@Abebe345 Indeed. I've often wondered how their music might have evolved if Mick Taylor hadn't left? Going by interviews, his influence wasn't slight. MT described one example. Around 1973, he & Mick Jagger experimented with a (then) new song, "Time Waits for No One". Taylor's lead guitar is quite outstanding. Just two of them in a room. Only later, Keith added his guitar. Song-writing credits went, as usual, to Jagger/Richards. MT cited other similar examples.
All great bands continue evolving. The Rolling Stones no less. But Mick Taylor's influence seems very evident, as was Brian Jones's previously.
@@kanashiimurakamisan I think we disagree here a bit. Mick and Keith have stayed dedicated to the sound they developed in the sixties imo even when Brian was in the band. They had a definite approach which they have never strayed from which probably lead to creative tensions with Brian. MT doesn't strike me as not wanting to dominate and sometimes his playing wasn't getting the feel of the music and he was playing over Jaggers vocals and out of sync with the other instruments. However, often he found the feel and was adding some beautiful playing while syncing with the band. He was never going to be lead and Keith just rhythm because a lot of the potency comes from Keith and it needed to be worked. This is where I wish MT had decided to become a Stone, understand what they were trying to do, and add his prodigious talents to the craft, but it looks like it was too much compromise in MT's eyes and he may have thought he would do better in another group. Mick Taylor could learn a lot from Keith as well about feel, less is more, and a different style. I think if both dedicAted themselves to this kind of partnership the result could have developed into something sublime. But in the end, to me, MT stayed his own man and that direction didn't develop imo. Sorry long winded.

With all due respect to Keith and Ronnie.... MT was by far and away the best guitarist in the Stones. He got shafted on writing credits. We miss him.
Saw an interesting Stones doco the other day where Keith was paying great tribute to Mick Taylor’s guitar playing skill. He basically said “I let Mick play most of the lead as he is so good, while I sat back and grooved on my riffs”. Keith gave the impression he really enjoyed having Mick in the band... it definitely took them to a different level musically.
Keith says different things at different times. In his not so well written book he of course slags off everyone, including the great Mick Taylor.

The Mick Taylor years were the best years of the Rolling Stones. When Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stone they were many things going on, yes he needed a break from the drugs but to leave the band was a mistake. I do believe at 24(?) he made that decision as a 24 yr. old and not as an adult. He was unhappy because he didn't get credit for a few songs. He should of stayed. I saw an interview with Keith Richards in 2015. Keith said he wish Mick would of stayed on after their '50th ' tour making the Stones a 3 guitar band. What ever happened to that?
I cant see Jageer into that scene.My perception was always that Taylor being so fucking good was stealing Jaggers limelight.Jagger tried to ditch the stones in the 80s.He wanted to be as big as michael jackson.But Jaggers idea of going solo was playing Stones songs without the Stones.We all know how well his solo career went.

Ajax7925 maybe the most profitable but I was a Stones fan from Tell Me in 1964 and when Brian left I no longer liked them as much. I don’t care for Angie and wild horses and stuff like that. Beggars Banquet was my last favorite album by them. They just didn’t seem like the Stones anymore after Brian. I liked a song here and there but it was different.

Brian Jones founded and made the Stones, Brian was also the heart and soul of the band, Taylor was a better guitarist.

Those who think Mick Taylor was the best Stones guitarist may be right. But I think the way Keith and Ronnie blend those choppy rhythm guitars is their very best sound. They put it together on the fly a lot of times ... listen to their live recordings - it's amazing how well they play together ...

Heaven and hell about the Stones years
The Stones surely benefited from his guitar playing, but most important was that Jagger and Richards were peaking as a songwriting duo, for a couple of years. The band's playing, the recording techniques and equipment also became much more pro around the time Taylor joined.

I don't see him as difficult, sounds like dealing with Keith Richards and all the drugs and turmoil around the band was difficult for Taylor to deal with. The band has not been as good since he left.

I have Bob Dylan’s Infidels album and I knew Mark Knoplfer and some other pretty famous people played on it but I had no idea MT was involved. Have to drag it out and have another listen now.
I think most Stones fan would agree, but Ronnie Wood was a great replacement and his personality and stage presence was and still is proof of that. Actually, it’s not fair to compare other guitarists to Taylor outside of Hendricks, Page etc. Taylor is such a humble and intelligent man for a virtuoso guitarist.
It's amazing how many people comment on the relationship Mick Taylor had with the Stones, and who actually wrote/composed their songs during his tenure, like they were there to witness it. It's all supposition.

I saw him about 10 years ago playing at a small club, to my surprise he spoke to me and a friend at the bar after , he said he wrote quite a few of the stones songs but was never allowed to have his name on the credits ! It had to be Jagger Richards , Bill wyman said the same in his book, Keith Richards wasn’t that stoned that he knew he was ripping off bandmates the music business is all about £££££
I wonder how many of the hits attributed to the greats have really been penned by them? They usually have some bullshit story about how they came up with the song -- like Paul McCartney and Paperback Writer: me aunt said why do you always write love songs can't you write other ones? -- but given the financial disparity between the big names and non-entities it makes sense that the latter would sell their wares and keep their mouths shut.
@@aoeulhs As someone who works in the film business, when it comes to artists and money, they can get quite insecure and protective about their interests and do shady things, which of course makes it easy for the sharks and vultures to come in and exploit that.
Same with Brian Jones who deserved credit on several great Stones songs. That's one thing I find difficult to overlook... their greed and dishonesty plus lack of respect for bandmates. Mick Taylor was amazing and one of the greatest guitarists ever!

I love his guitar playing and he was with the Stones during their best period. That said, I don't really feel all that bad for him that he apparently is almost broke.
He left a great gig on his own decision with nothing else lined up. Basically did nothing of note after he left the band.
One of the reasons he left was because he said drug abuse in the band was bad but then he pissed through his Stones money buying drugs with it. He never did anything to clean up.
He complains that he gets shafted from getting any royalties for the albums he played on(which I agree he should get) but has never taken any legal action to try and fight for it....though I know the Stones likely can afford much better lawyers...he still never took any action. He made his own bed by leaving the best gig.

BS Keith was their all the time, even if he wasn't the best guitar player in the band, he's the body of the band.
Without Keith there is no Rolling Stones. And when he's gone so are they, irreplaceable
One of his complaints was that a lot of his best guitar work never made it onto albums - both studio and live performances. That plus writing credit snubs made it a very frustrating situation for him.
