    Some things that help me:
    I'm honest and realistic about my time and energy levels. I only occasionally color during the work week, mostly it's on weekends.. and that is fine. I never force myself to color.
    I don't set coloring goals, deadlines, etc. I color what I want, when I want.
    I have several different mediums to choose from, and different sets/brands/palettes within those mediums. I switch between them as I please, completely on a whim. I have my books organized according to what medium they agree with so I can choose one at a glance of my bookshelf.
    I play with my supplies.. swatching, color mixing, experimenting, trying new techniques, testing different papers and pencils/pens/paints, etc. IMO this is still coloring.
    I don't allow myself to have multiple pages going at the same time. It's too easy to get a half dozen pages half done.. which I'm no longer motivated and inspired by.. and then have those drag at me and cause stress and guilt.
    I have books that are simple and easy and often use them between complicated pages.
    I often print pdf coloring pages on half sheets, the smaller page is easier to complete. I keep them in little half size binders with page protectors.
    I only use products and supplies I love. If I don't love it I rehome it without guilt.
    I always have an audiobook on when I color, I find it engages both sides of my brain and adds an entire other dimension to my coloring experience. Some people like music instead. For some this doesn't work at all so YMMV.
    I color in bed, which is my comfort space. I have all my supplies set up to enable this and kept in their own portable cases so all I have to do is grab my lapdesk, sharpener, book, and a case of whatever I'm using. I keep my swatches in each case so I have them at hand instantly, and have a little pencil bag with all the miscellaneous stuff.. eraser, basic gel/posca pens (white, black, gold, silver), blenders, brush, etc. It takes about two minutes to set up or put away my stuff. This is essential for me because I can color completely in the moment with no fuss.

      Such wonderful ways you have there of keeping inspired with your colouring and getting out of colouring slumps. Thank you so much for sharing them....there are definitely some I can keep in mind and try out 🤗💗

    Thanks Shel One of you last suggestions was the best for me. Do it for yourself. Seeing everyone and the results you all achieve and wanting to do the same becomes more important then just "Doing this for yourself". Playing enjoying my style. Today was a day I just needed to go for a walk. Returning home I found it didn't really help much. So listening to you was very timely. Thanks so much.

      I am so happy to hear that my video helped you in a little way! You're most welcome and I hope that I can continue bringing content you enjoy watching. And yes! Ultimately, colouring should be for you....no one else. And when it stops being that, we should try and take a step back before it becomes frustrating and brings us down rather than raise our spirits. 🤗💗

    Mindless coloring with limited supplies during my vacation helped to spark something.. but one of your last videos made me think of why I love coloring. When I realized what it was I started coloring again after 7 months 😳. So thank for that.

    Hi Shel - what a great video today. Thanks for jumping into this topic…something we can all relate to. I loved seeing your example of using the Ursula Schwab page as a way to just put color to paper. This is something that’s worked for me too. It was a good way for me to enjoy my hobby, without being too bothered about the outcome.
    Another thing that has helped me just recently, it so have multiple pages on the go. I used to avoid WIPs, and instead really wanted to finish a page before starting a new one. But I noticed that sometimes I was just powering through a page to finish it - and not enjoying the process. Setting it aside, and working on a different page has helped me enjoy the page I’m coloring at the moment, and then return back to the previous page with fresh energy.
    Thanks again for reminding us how to enjoy this hobby regardless of how our energy is feeling at the moment.

      Hi Natascha, thank you for taking the time to watch the video. I am so glad you liked the topic. It is nice to see someone share the same ideas.....it is interesting to see what others do in a colouring slump too. A mindless colouring book really helps. And I love having more than 1 page on the go so I can flip between them depending on my mood so that I can stay motivated throughout colouring that page and enjoy colouring it from start to finish. 🤗💗

    I have been coloring with you the last 18 months with great pleasure! I started to set goals and had some stress. I started to be active in my other hobby: quilting. Did quite a lot the last three months and now i like to color again! Changing activities works for me😂

    Fantastic advice! I do many of your suggestions and they do work for sure!! I'm a mood Colorist too! One thing I failed at this month was your last tip. I pressured myself, made mistakes and got frustrated. I think the TH-cam portion is what got me and it never should. 1 page or 10, it must always be enjoyable, yes! Thank you, Thank you 😊

    • @shelscolouringjourney
      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're most welcome! There is always the next month to make sure you do the colouring for you and not worry about numbers (I have only managed 2 this month so far haha). It happens, and as TH-camrs, it is very easy to fall into that cycle of stressing how many pages we are getting to show at the end of the month. I don't blame you for that at all!! Thanks for taking the time to watch 🤗💗

    Great ideas. I’ve been looking through my books and getting disheartened, so I picked a Johanna Basford book and just straight coloured with my Faber Castells pitt artist brush pens, no blending or shading, no pressure 😊

    Thank you for sharing your tips and that you get ‘stuck’ too
    I have Lulu Mayo’s Kawaii Tarot as my fallback book. I can ‘draw’ a card from the deck, which gets me out of ‘choosing’ a page. I also try a different pencil set or medium in a favourite book just to see how they go with the paper. Sometimes it’s just enough to get me engaged!
    I’m colouring mostly when I get in from work as I mull over ideas while on the bus home!

      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing, it is so nice to see what others do to get out of slumps. It is such a great idea to have the Tarot card book as a fallback book and draw a card to decide on a page! Definitely takes the element of having to choose a page out of the equation. Thank you for taking time to watch and share your ideas 🤗💗

    Hi, Shelly, what a great idea was to do this video! I'm a bit in a colouring slump right now , I find that nothing motivates me, I don't like the outcome of my coloured pages and today I abandoned a Mythographic Paradise page, thing that I have never done before. I think I will take a break and focus on another hobby that I have been neglecting lately.

    • @shelscolouringjourney
      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! That's a great idea, if you have another hobby that you enjoy, stepping away from colouring if it is doing nothing for you right now is a brilliant idea. You don't want the colouring to become a 'have to' rather than 'want to'. I hope you enjoy your other hobby for now and I am sure the motivation for colouring will return soon enough 🤗💗

    Shelly thank you for doing this video. I understand what you are saying on all levels of how to stay motivated, I like your mindless coloring, i do that once in awhile while I am thinking! I usually color in the evenings as that is when I have time, except this past 2 weeks, we have a new puppy and I am only attempting things that are easily gotten to and no great thought! However, that said I bought Kerby Rosanes Wondrous Animals, I have all of his books at the moment, I got this one with the intent to try and do limited color pallets using Sara Renae Clarks color combos and I have been using colors that I would not usually try. I am finding it is making me more aware of shadows, mixing colors and stepping out of my comfort zone. I like seeing tutorials as they help so much in how to make some of these things happen so I am trying to do them! But I get times I want to color it is very soothing and calming and I like listening to a book and being quiet! So thanks for your tips and your beautiful pages!

    • @shelscolouringjourney
      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's my pleasure Maureen, thank you for taking the time to watch! And thank you for sharing your tips and ideas on how to get out of a colouring slump. I think having a colour palette to work with would be a great idea with regards to finding inspiration for a page. I very rarely use colour palettes these days, for some reason I find them a challenge to apply to my pages. I may have to start trying to use them more often.
      I too love to colour listening to podcasts or in silence to have some quite time which helps get away from the chatty days at work and the chatty days with my little ones haha 🤗💗

    Morning Shelly you have tons of good ideas 💡 I love coloring early in the morning to! But when I’m in a coloring slump I just don’t color I take that down time to look through all my books I organize them and then I pull books out that spark my interest or books I don’t normally reach for or I haven’t colored in . I thumb through them and usually I can get motivated over something on the page . But I just take time and enjoy a little break and plan for the next page ❤

    When I have a coloring slump, I just go and do another hobby I love. Usually it is singing, I have a space where I can go and sing and record, that always gets me in the zone of peace and calm. After a few days doing that, I go back to coloring and I find the slump is gone. Sometimes I do both in the same week, alternate days, that works too.

    This is very encouraging for me, Shel. As carer for a person with disabilities, I find my daily life often fractured with interruptions, and that includes my colouring time. Sometimes colouring half a leaf or a flower is all I can manage in a day. I do enjoy colouring when I have time to really get into it, and I think 'I must do this more often and longer,' but reality is what it is.

    • @shelscolouringjourney
      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am so glad that you found the video encouraging. You are absolutely right....reality is what it is! And real life definitely has to come first before the hobby. Your days must be really busy as a carer and you must have so little time for yourself. I do hope you find ways of finding time to care for you and spend some time doing something that helps you. I am glad that you get little colouring time here and there 🤗💗

    Hi! I love your videos and your art and You inspire me. So thank you! Watching your video and I thought I’d comment.
    Maybe you are a person who like to learn. And you feel happy when you are curious. Dopamine’s flowing.
    Also you describe you coloring sessions as cozy and comforting and safe with your family, and that makes you happy to. But it’s the oxytocin and calming hormones.
    I believe that the rest of your life, the world events, work and friends or virus and sleep effects us and if we need dopamine or oxytocin to feel balance. Also stress effects our ability to plan, organize and make decisions. And sometimes coloring demands higher cognitive functions like executive functioning. Maybe analyzing what you need - comfort, distraction, excitement or rest can help us choose parts of coloring that give us balance for the day or period in life.
    Thanks for sharing!

    I have a mindless coloring book as well: 'Exploratorium - Lei Melendrez". I just take my waterbased markes and start to do block coloring. I think it's so relaxing and the result is always great I think. 😀 I am coloring for 2.5y now and I never really have a slump but somethimes I don't know what I wanna color so then I take this book.
    I also start 3-4 pages at the same time with all a different style or medium or subject. But mostly I try to get it done by the end of the month, otherwise I won't get to it anymore LOL

      So true! I do spend a lot of times looking through my books and trying to choose a page. I like to try and shortlist some pages for 3 months at a time (as per my colouring options videos) and then try and choose pages from that shortlist. It definitely helps to reduce the time it takes to pick a page....however, I do love looking through my books and I can spend lots of time just sitting and flipping through the books in my collection.
