I read this story with my senior English classes every year. When I ask my students who they think the witch is, I get a wide variety of answers and story interpretations. They make for a very interesting discussion of the ideas and themes Jackson is exploring. Thanks for this and the other stories of hers that you have chosen to read. Jackson is far too over-overlooked. How many women writers were writing this kind of material during her time? She is a gem.
Thank you. Shirley Jackson was so unappreciated in her time, but there are well known Gothic writers of today that are greatly influenced by her work. 'The Witch' is the one I find most chilling for several reasons. CSJ
Hey, don't overlook Agatha Christie when it comes to ground-breaking women authors---completely different tone and genre, I know, but my God, her masterpiece "And Then There Were None" is terrifyingly diabolical.
Excellent narration! I’ve been a huge fan of Shirley Jackson for too many decades to admit. We need more of Shirley Jackson and more excellent narration. Thank you very much!

Disturbing indeed---Shirley was trying to jar people out of their trance, is my feeling.
Shirley Jackson is so good at stories that are commentaries on how awful people can be. More please!
Thank you very much Carol. Shirley Jackson had great insight. I have another SJ reading CHARLES. Hope you enjoy it. CSJ
