  • Carson McCullers born February 19, 1917, was an American novelist, playwright, short story writer and poet. She mostly set her stories in the deep south and her style is described as
Southern Gothic, depicting the inner lives of lonely people, misfits and outcasts.
She counted among her literary friends Truman Capote, Gore Vidal, Isak Denisen (Out of Africa), Director John Huston and close friend American Playwright Tennesse Williams.
Her novels included The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Member of the Wedding which were adapted to stage and film. Carson suffered frail health and battled alcoholism. She died Sept. 29, 1967, at the age of 50 in Nyack New York.
Tennessee Williams said of her. "Carsons heart was often lonely, and it was a tireless hunter for those to whom she could offer it, but it was a heart that was graced with light that eclipsed the shadow".
