Look at the date when this was done. At that time as far as instructing beginners this was helpful. Not many videos were available at that time. At least it was a paying gig for these players. Great to hear Steve's voice and see his stroke again. I grew up in Steve's 4 seasons pool hall and eventually became a hundred ball runner but let me tell you I saw Steve do things on the table that I could never ever do. RIP big guy !
Steve was a school teacher and who knew he be one of the best and I was lucky enough to meet him and Fats. It hurts to run out and miss the money ball, we all done it before but safety is just important as being able 2 run out
Well.. l have this on VHS & "Bar Table Billiards" where Steve's playin' this guy who doesn't ever let Steve play really. It was on a small table...hence the name "Bar Table Billiards". l've improved my game through watching both of these wonderful videos. Two quotes l remember often... Steve :"Remember what l said before about alternative shots?" & Jimmy:"You got a problem come up?--you deal with it NOW." Oh yeah... also Steve:"Let's see what happens--" + "Those are the chances l LOVE to take--"
Boy has the game changed since this was released! Some of these tips are great, but several of them I would not do like that push out for the back cut bank on the 1 during the 9 ball section. The people at my local tournaments don't have much trouble on those.
I have had those 'Tom Cruise Color of Money' layouts after a break where you just have stop shots on every ball a foot from the pocket, but certainly not often.
I think he said "agate"; that is, the shooter in a game of marbles (usually "ringer", which is a rather pool like game at the high levels of play). The "good" shooters are made of agate, a quartz-like rock. Clearly (upon a second listen anyway 😆) he's making references that are in line with his character, a sort of noir figure, as marbles was on the very tail end of popularity even in 1989.
I always liked Steve but in this video he's a bit stifled in his manner of speech. It's obvious he memorized at least most of this and then parroted back those words back. It doesn't have a natural feel. His intended audience are those who either have never picked up a pool cue or those who have almost no experience playing pool.
the only person on earth who calls jimmy mataya "the world's greatest hustler" is jimmy mataya. everyone else calls him "the world's biggest DOUCHE BAG".
Ur wrong all the other professional pool players call him that. I've seen writers in some pool magazines dub him as that too. His record is still unbroken as the youngest player to ever win back to back World championships. Maybe get a clue
When a grown-man refers to itself as a "pretty boy," you know something is peculiar about this... person, like narcissism, perhaps? :) Anyhow, if you know anything about Mataya, you know the guy exaggerates just about everything that comes out of his mouth. I think every pool players in the world would agree with me there are no shots in pool that requires a 25 yrs of practice, or 25 months. A month perhaps. Only for someone who has never play pool. And, by the way, a masse shot is also called a curved shot. To utilize English to curve the cue ball. No big deal.
everything that just came out of your post bored the shit out of me. floyd has more personality in one of his dingleberries than you have in your entire being
actually - Miz's 14.1 safety walk thros were pretty helpful - as well as his comment about re-evaluating the rack going into the last 4/5 balls - thanks for posting - plus seeing Steve's awesome stroke is helpful

I've always wanted to watch that as a kid but couldn't afford it. Great stuff. Thanx.
Yes indeed! I'm having some long forgotten curiosity satiated; used to see the ads for this on ESPN in the mid-1990s.
Rofl
Thanks for this. I love watching Pretty Boy Floyd videos, he's so 80's cocky lol.
kevin nelson I like to listen to his commentary much more than watch his matches. He's very knowledgable. And yes a touch douchy
I love his voice and the way he talks. The guy could have been an actor or something.
Master of the massé 😂😂😂😂
@@shortydancerlol
this video and the twilight zone 'a game of pool' is kind of how I learned how to play when I couldnt be on a table
R.I.P Jimmy "Pretty Boy Floyd" Mataya.
I really like the vintage filter they put on here, gives it that retro feel.
🙄
the slow motion replay for mataya's jump shot was his example of an illegal jump lol
Connor Phares Wow! What’s up with that?
Well observed. I thought i was setting wrong! He really scooped it up and called it a day! Lol
Yeah, I guess that was an editing mistake.
@@neuvocastezero1838 a mayata mistake *
Wrong he's not against jump shots just jump cues get it right
The best informational pool video i have seen. I learned alot

"THAT'S WHAT WE CALL..."
Pool has come a long way in 30 + years and for that reason I would absolutely disagree at 21:25 Ask SVB or Corey if it is luck
Yeah a couple of these tips I just wouldn't do this day and age. Overall not a bad video though to get people started.
Thank you!
Can you upload the trick shots VHS please.
mataya's 5 rail draw is still some of the strongest I've seen, even with today's modern players
@@sjang816 that’s so true. Amazing that only less than 200 people watched this video in 5 years! And only a little over 30 comments! Amazing!
thats all fine and dandy.. but whats the best aiming system, when the ghost ball method just don't work for you?
Kinfolk Kinfolk tram lines, buy practical pool
33:29 : "I'd like to bring out Pretty Boy Floyd!"
37:08 : "Thanks, Jim."
Haha, oh well.
Wasn't that his first name?
@@Zigarius1123 It is, yeah...I thought it was mildly amusing how he briefly broke character.
Hilarious you do know in pool they have Nick names well fats named Jimmy "pretty boy Floyd" that's all
@32:20 lol at women going to powder up. Today they'd call that sexist.
Yeah today sux
Mataya looks like Edd Kookie Byners
fast and loose you say
He married her when she was 17 and he was 31 wtf
52:08 this music is ok.
It was a class act for Steve to offer the invite to say hello. Rest well Steve!
yeah it's really tough to run out when you have all stop shots and no trouble balls, but that NEVER HAPPENS in real life.

45:18 this little white what?

People play straight pool on bar boxes?!?
malayaleeking I prefer an 8 foot Brunswick. But a 9 foot diamond is what I got
Pretty sure this is a nine footer. Camera lenses and all.
@@johnseal56 oh you're right, just noticed the counters 👍

@@sjang816I agree 100 percent w that statement. The dude must not know that Minnesota Fats is the one who named him Pretty Boy Floyd 😳
Minnesota Fats named him that, genius
this "information" is totally useless.
5 comments- you seem upset friend. Are you this thorough on every pool video, or merely the ones masquerading as informational?
