    Fantastic to watch. Loved this. What a lovely time capsule. Mizerak played some great shots in that second frame of snooker. Especially considering he was using a pool cue! The decider should have been 9 ball on a snooker table.

    Great upload, Dennis. This is a very entertaining and instructive format -- calling as it does upon the full spectrum of the players' cueing skills and strategies.

    Simply just an awesome consept! This is genius! Why don't they do more of this? Snooker vs pool! I can see maybe a new opportunity for billiard sports! Imagine a world billiard championship! All games in one and same tournament! My dream match would be Kid Delicious vs Ronnie O'Sullivan!

    My favorite games are straight pool and snooker. After many years I cannot tell say which of the tow is hardest only they are the the most difficult games to master no matter what sport you pick.

    Steve Davis only had 48 hours practise at pool before he played this match. Plus I honestly think that Steve Davis was told not to win as it was to promote Snooker it makes sense not to piss the American audience off.

    • @LazlosPlane
      @LazlosPlane 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absurd.

    • @Jason-me1bs
      @Jason-me1bs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LazlosPlane Why would it be absurd? If they thought it would antagonise the Americans and make them feel belittled it could indeed have a detrimental effect I. Their acceptance of Snooker as a sport. I agree that it’s highly unlikely and to be honest with you I do not know why I thought that then because it’s not what I think now but he definitely was not taking it that seriously. However, it’s always nice to hear someone’s opinion with an explanation instead of just coming across as abrupt and rude. I’m not saying your rude but please understand this is open to interpretation of the reader.

      @@Jason-me1bs I would argue, at 50,000 pounds or dollars, Steve was definitely taking it seriously, both of them were. And even now, that's decent money, but I agree, it was mostly played, in good spirits, by both players, but both were made going to put the effort in to win, for both pride and the money

      @@Jason-me1bs The reason that the guy didn't explain it to you is because what you said is so incredibly stupid. And it's so obviously a desperate cope for Davis losing.
      If you said something intelligent or half-reasonable there would be something to respond to.

    • @alphacapo
      @alphacapo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jason-me1bs nobody in america takes billiards to seriously... unless your a pro player or a road hustler. Another thing is that there are very few 12 foot snooker tables (or snooker tables of any size to play on) in america. A hall in my area had a 10 foot snooker table for about 2 yrs. Most of the time guys would just rack a game of 9 ball on it and gamble. I haven't seen a snooker table anywhere since then. Sure we americans appreciate a perfect frame. But we just don't play snooker. Never have.

      There are two other fundamental specialties in the game of billiards: the Italian or 5 quilles (impractical for these players) and the carom, in which the pool player is totally advantaged. (but there are also other specialties, such as the Russian pyramid, the sinuca, the English 8 ball etc.). The beauty of the biliardo game is also given by its wealth of specialties.

    instead of Davies, although Alex was fading by 87, I think his type of play

      Personally I think alex Higgins would have had a better chance at beating Mizerak in a format that favored him.
      Mainly because Alex is a better tactian and gritty competitor in what (upstanding Brit accent)
      .... is clearly 2 legs of a game this... this American pocket billiards?.... rather CLUNKY SORT of game I reckon favors a Clunky sort of player Mr Higgins...from Ireland he is? Good god man, a rather sorted LOT, from Ireland no doubt yes...hmm heh heh hmmm eh eh, yes another brandy snifter thank you my good man....RIGHT, 100 quid says this upstart from Ireland hands Mr Mizerak a good drumming....RIGHT, Ladbrokes it is for the taker, show that American the Queens bit of English yes...hmmm heh heh mmm yes.

    Does anyone know what happened to Mizerak from 1987 to 1997? He wasn't in terrific shape here, but what did he do in the ensuing decade to get in such poor physical condition?

    • @johntallanger4036
      @johntallanger4036 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He was already overweight. As people age their energy levels can go down and they end up eating too much to try to keep energetic.

    • @FIVE-0-APOCALYPTO
      @FIVE-0-APOCALYPTO ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually for Mizerak, this was in good condition for him as he continued to gain weight in subsequent years to come.
      He liked to eat, as evident of the stories where if it was some professional pool banquet or award event, johnny archer ironically and Steve, would be the last ones eating, and Johnny being the mystery portion as to why he could eat so much but never appear so....
      It's Mizerak and his particular size proclivity, around his waist, clearly a classic "pear shape", that opened the door as a perfect example as to dispelling the notion of the shooting side hip being in the way of stroke mechanics, where I found from observation an extreme similarity when comparing to the old school straight pool players of the 50s and 60s....
      But many if not most of the old school straight pool players were not fat, even though they exhibited the same type of sequence mechanics where they typically start out upright and place the bridge hand down and then sink down into final address alignment to the shotline...
      It took me a little while to figure out until it was obvious and that was the old school players played with suit jackets on, but notably for the era, those big coat pockets externally.
      It doesn't matter if you're slim, it's still forces you to start with your stroke side arm and hand away from your body as if you were fat like Mizerak...
      If one mimicks this, they will quickly find a more harmonious connection and setup at final address to the shot line more times than not, and thus explains any players with a lot of girth tend to play well on average because of being forced into this unique mechanical setup that is harmonious to an effective setup of delivery...

      @@HoosierRooster It is much too difficult to compare players of different eras to one another. The current players stand on the shoulders of giants as did the players before them. The game has evolved so much in the last two centuries that I don't believe de Oro or Mosconi could handle the best players today but that's not to say they weren't the best of their generation and deserve to be mentioned with the all time greats.

    • @LazlosPlane
      @LazlosPlane 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Poor reasoning. By people who saw both Mosconi was the best. Statistics are for loses.

    • @poolfiend007
      @poolfiend007 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LazlosPlane I nor anyone else sited any stats. It would be pointless to compare because they played different games but try this on for size. Mosconi spent a lifetime playing straight pool and amassed a high run of 526 on easy equipment. Most of the top players today have high runs in the 3 to 400 ball range on Diamond Pro 9 footers and they barely play the game. If the top players of today had spent their lives playing straight pool they would have crushed 526 a long time ago. Danny Diliberto, Mark Griffith, Grady Matthews and Billy Incardona are just a few guys that saw Mosconi play and they all say that Efren and Shane are better.

    Why they didn't favor a Higgins/Mizerak format is beyond me.
    Davis was a rather, nice sort of lad, representative of the protestant English majority in which, to win out a format of mostly American pocket billiards, would be rather insulting to the fine British stiff upper lip dignity, that snooker itself should represent in their eyes, sort of like royalty finding out their would be Kingly Prince.....what?
