An interesting discussion. I had my tonsils out in the 1980s. I was having infections at least once a month... surgery was canceled three times because of strep throat. I had terribly cryptic tonsils. Interestingly, no one ever told my parents to change out my toothbrush (I'm now a pediatrician, and I have seen several patients who had "antibiotic-resistant strep throat" (which really isn't a thing if you're using amox or PCN) who were magically cured when I told their parents to get a new toothbrush 48 hours after starting the antibiotics.)
Anyway... my surgeon (a consultant at Mayo Clinic... so I'm pretty sure he was experienced) couldn't get the bleeding to stop with cautery or packing... he ended up having to place sutures. When I was in high school, I became friends with his daughter. I told him that he did my tonsillectomy and had to place sutures. He said... "you! You're the one? I will never forget that day. That is the ONLY time I have ever had to do that. We STILL talk about you!"

I'll remember that change of toothbrush idea. Thank you for the tip.

I was a Medical student before my marriage. After having 2kids with ADHD could not continue my study. Then I studied nutrition and got a diploma as a Nutritional therapist. I love to work with Autistic children. Just subscribed your channel, because I found you really care about people. I have met some doctors who don’t care about their patients. May Almighty bless you and Give you the highest success here and hereafter.

I had my tonsils removed in 2001. I threw up a huge wad of blood at the hospital then I was fine. Went home same day. I believe I had the third to the last one you described. They said it was a laser. And the scars on the back of my throat are perfect. It was never packed it didn’t need to be, the doctor was highly experienced as well. He was an ENT who had been in business for over 30yrs.

In reality we are talking about probability, one operation leading to a slightly higher risk than another. All of these operations are still being used because if one of them was frankly dangerous it would be banned. I'm glad you had a good experience.

Your evidence-based approach and explanations are fantastic. Do you have any recommendations for professional singers undergoing tonsillectomy?

Very interesting. The bleeding and pain just after 1 week is the reason of avoiding electrocautery tonsillectomy in the third world with surgery teams that stay a few days doing surgeries there. I prefer cold dissection always.

I'm a fan of cold steel too. My parents used to organise trips to India for charity medicine too. Might be good to revive again.

Great video... Was doing tonsillectomies in past.. Stopped in between due to lack of anesthesia support.. Then again restarted.. Coldsteel with lowerpole ligation and bipolar is the technique used now.. Nearing 40 cases now.. Primaary bleeds were there 5-6.. But stopped with tranhexaminic acid infusion and cold icecreams😂... Still experimenting and improvising techniques.. Sometimes feel why did i took such risky speciality😢

Use Bizact (lower primary bleeding) + bipolar touch up for hemostasis (lower secondary bleeding).

You mentioned... Most surgeons agree on when to go to theatre...
Could you elaborate what that agreement is?
    Thanks

when the bleeding isn't stopping and the patient doesn't have long to live based on the amount of blood loss and the level of haemorrhagic shock.
