    didnt realise it was such a big job and would explain a new clutch engine mounts transmission work etc plus a huge bill at the end of it all. Great video

      @@SuperRon i have a 2004 R32 and the previous owner spent well over $25000 NZ dollars on timing chain, clutch water pump and heaps of other stuff which is more then i paid for the car but runs like a dream. cheers

      Very nice, I've just converted that to £ and that's had a lot spent. But as you see from the video they're very labour intensive to do anything on so the Bill's soon add up! But well worth it in the end!

    fair play a fair amount of work. but when I Did mine I went for the turbo upgrade GT35 Garrett
    with forged JE pistons and ARP bolts. Makes sense when doing that amount of work
    as mine is now over 500 HP with upgraded clutch and gearbox. Respect 5yko

    Wow, awesome job and very pro , I subscribe, btw we in Indonesia are not so lucky to have that beautiful R32 Sir, but what we have here only t4 caravelle with VR6 12V and VR6 24V, and tbh in my eyes that R32 engine is look very similar with VR6 24 V, and also that timing chain look the same ( Well, I am not a pro or mechanic )

      A VR6 caravelle sounds very cool, I don't think we had those here!

    Just watched your video as, when I fitted my crank seal, the seal splayed out around the shaft. I thought it was because we removed the plastic insert, but noticed you did too. How did you stop this from happening? As I've had to order a new one and don't want the same thing to happen. Any tips would be great! Thanks

      Nothing out of the ordinary with these crank seals, a little bit of oil to lube it up and carefully creep it on.

    Pretty straight forward video, thanks a lot. I have 1 question regarding the sealant. How did you apply the sealant on the timing cases/covers, I mean the area where 2 cases/covers meet up-the upper one and the lower. There is a head gasket in between. Did you apply the sealant there, which means basically on the head gasket? Is it correct way. Perfect video.

    Getting the engine out makes it much easier 👍
    How long that all together take you to do?
    My 2.8 VR6 MK4 will need the engine out at some point for a number of reasons, including chains 😅

      It was a couple of years ago now but I think it was around 2 days all told with everything, it does soon escalate with everything else that needs doing at the same time

      @@SuperRon Ok no problem. Being original it will only take one type. Some people recommend Motul, Liqui Moly, Ravenol... but I don't trust them even though they are excellent oils. I will use original and so there is no mistake. Thanks again.

    Hi Ron, great video by the way! I have a mk4 golf 2.8 and wondered if the process is the same? But I'm also very unsure if my timing chain needs doing? It makes the noise but drives fine and I'm not really sure what to look/hear out for. Thanks!

      The 2.8's are very similar and overall the preceidure is pretty much the same. They usually rattle on start up is the first sign the tensioners are getting weak.

      We use all genuine VW parts direct from the main dealer through TPS.

    Does it already have a new head gasket? With the block out of the car, why not do the head gasket at the same time? Its maybe 3 hours more work now vs 20 hours eventually.

      These aren't prone to headgasket failures, so it's not something to replace just for the sake of it. But yes like you say we are pretty much there at this point.

    Fantastic, I have an MK4 R32 which could do with the same amount of work, how long did it take. I’m think of doing it myself, and taking the engine out is definitely the way forward.

      Thanks for watching. The whole thing including the chains and service took 2 days, about 16 hours. I could probably do it alot quicker knowing what I do now as shown in the video.

      @@davidfrisby2170 I've done it on my golf mk4 2.8 VR6 engine with the engine still in the car, can recommend taking out the engine completely, getting to the bolts was a pain in the ass

    Just curious, how did the plastic guides look when you tore into it? I have a clutch ready for my mk4, I might as well do the chains as well. I will be pulling the motor for sure.

      The guides weren't too bad, it had a tiny rattle on start up which is why we did them, but nothing was dangerously low. It's worth doing it all while it's out.

      @@SuperRon yeah, I’m at 209,000 miles on my r32. Original clutch, chains. I have no rattles on start up I’ve checked measuring blocks in vcds to tip me off on any stretching (which would be from the guides) and the degrees appear to be with in tolerance still. But I might as well do it if I’m doing the clutch.

    how much and how long does a job like this take? i have a passat cc with the 3.6 version of this engine and it's coming up 100,000 miles

    Where did you drain the coolant from? I have a MKIV R32, and can't find a good spot to bleed the coolant, unless you just undo a line.

    Which transmission comes in a manual r32 google says dsg but according to also Google dsg only comes in autos and the car I'm looking to buy is manual.

      The r32 comes in DSG or 6 speed manual. I'm not sure on the gearbox code but manuals are very common

      Parts are not cheap, I think it's about £1200 for all genuine parts and the clutch and dmf on top of that. Then labour too it can head up to £2-3k

      Would it have been possible to drop the subframe with the engine transmission, and steering all attached?

      The engine and gearbox don't mount to the subframe they mount to the chassis legs, so wouldn't drop together.

    Hi there mate great video and work. Could you tell me how many hours labour a chain and Tensioners replacement to should take? Looking at an R32 but this job scares me tbh. Would I be right in budgeting £2k parts and labour?

      Thanks for watching 😁 I think the genuine chains, tensioners and associated bits come in at about £1k, I spent around 15 hours on this so with the rest of the servicing parts that would probably be another grand, so you're about right with a full service. We fitted and new clutch and flywheel on this one too which was around £500ish I think.

      We've never experienced a problem with the pulleys themselves so have never changed them, we've replaced solonoids before due to failure but they are able to be done in the car by taking the top cover off, with the gearbox still attached
