🌴👀 Houseplant Hits & Misses: Surprises from My Indoor Jungle!

  • 🌿👋 Welcome to my Indoor Jungle! Today, I'm thrilled to share some truly surprising stories from my houseplant collection. Whether you're a seasoned plant parent or just starting out, you'll find insights and inspiration in my experiences. 🌱✨
🌟 Starting with the Queen Anthurium - Initially, I was hesitant about this plant. It's coveted by many but known for its challenges. After two failed propagation attempts, I finally understand the hype with my latest addition. It's not just about keeping a plant alive but appreciating its journey and the joy it brings.
🐉 Alocasia Woes - Next, we dive into the world of Alocasia, particularly the Alocasia brancifolia and Alocasia bagina (Dragon Scale). Known for their beauty, they're also notorious for their growing difficulties. Even with years of experience, these two have tested my green thumb to the max, challenging me to adapt and persevere.
💘 Philodendron Love - The Philodendron Heterocraspedon was love at first sight for me. Despite the struggles with shipping and acclimatization, I've finally found a rhythm that makes this stunning plant thrive. It's a reminder of the patience needed in plant care, especially with sensitive species.
🌴 Piper Plants - Surprisingly, my Piper sylvaticum and Piper crocatum have been a breeze to care for. Contrary to popular belief, these have not demanded much, showing that plant care experiences can vary widely. They've been a delightful addition to my collection, defying the usual expectations.
🚫 Philodendron Paraiso Verde Challenges - On the flip side, the Philodendron Paraiso Verde has been disappointing. It grows lanky, often loses its variegation, and just doesn't mesh with my plant care style. It's important to recognize not every plant is suited for every collector.
🌺 Last Minute Love: Syngonium Chiapense - Ending on a high note, the Syngonium Chiapense was an unexpected favorite. Its rubber-like foliage and vigorous growth have made it a standout in my collection. Sometimes, the unassuming plants surprise us the most!
🎥 Why watch this video? Whether you're dealing with your own plant challenges or just love hearing about unique tropical plants, there's something here for everyone. I share not only the successes but the valuable lessons learned from the failures.

Of course there needs to be a part two, Memo. My biggest surprise--because not only did I not want one, but it's now my favorite plant--is the Platycerium bifurcatum. Probably helps that it's absolutely huge. What a showpiece. Cheers!

A part two is on the horizon Dave! And that Platycerium sounds amazing! I love it when a plant catches us off guard like that, I never wanted a Platycerium either and my superbum is just a beast now so I get it. 🌿🌟

🇦🇺🙋🏻 hi Memo, I thoroughly engroyed your segment as usual 😉
Unpleasant surprises... Lipstick plant, grows great, just won't flower! Philodendron billietiae, one leaf in 7 months 🫤. Ok, get ready to laugh...adansonii, it just won't grow nicely for me atm. I cut and propped , gave several pieces away, and then all but one of mine died - 3rd time's a charm!😅
Pleasant surprises, chiapense 💕 Homalomena freckles, Caladium pink symphony, which I bought because of your beautiful Caladium.
    Part 2, yes please
    Have a great week

Philo ring of fire surprised me ... slowest growing thing ever despite being under a grow light. I swear it's given me one new leaf in 6 months.
Plants that are currently surprising me in a good way, however, are my caladiums! Didn't much care for them the first year in soil, but I started them in water this year and I literally cannot stop looking at them! Immaculate leaves the size of my hand, bold veins with high contrast color (or just green and white if you don't like colorful plants). I don't understand why people dislike them so much!

Ferns in general surprised me. When I worked out that they like light (as you mentioned), I started growing them everywhere. They add so much texture and interest and there’s a great variety. Love that most are also pet safe.

Your sence of humour is hilarious. I lol all through.
I live in the tropics so most of your plants that you love grow easily in my garden.
I dont wish to appear smug but just because a plant has big leaves and is easy to grow in a cold climate generally in my world makes it a weed. Ie, the last two in your vid.
    Dont hate me.

It’s funny you mention the alocasia dragon scale. About two or three months ago I ordered plants online and that particular shop sends little gifts to people with their first purchase. I had decided to only get plants that are said to be not too fussy, with my less than a year experience and tiredness from things that failed. I was just happy the second prayer plant I got seemed to do well and decided that it’s enough anxiety for now 🥲
However, my gift was a baby dragon scale. And I was like … damn … that’s the last kind of plant I want to try rn. But well, now I have it, so challenge accepted. I love those dark red veins. And tbh she isn’t giving me any trouble at all. Growing slowly but steadily and even giving me a new leaf 🥰

A surprise dragon scale gift! Sounds like it’s finding its way. 🐉🍃 hopefully it will thrive for you. I do knot quite a few people that have found success with them, I do think I am in a bit og a minority

My Monstera Albo surprised me, it was a one leaf mid cut. It took ages to root but it has been growing like crazy ever since it got potted. Where my Monstera Thai was a small plant already established. It is growing much slower than my Albo. They are in the same window and substrate 🤷‍♀️😀🇨🇦

I am excited for spring and looking forward to your recommendations, if I see the queen anthurium this year I will hopefully have the confidence to get it!

I once had a philodendron Paraiso Verde. I sold it because it gave me headache at the end. My heterocraspedon is bouncing back after struggeling after reciving it. My absolute favorites at the moment is my Piper SP Santiago, which has very interesting leaves and my Lycopodium Goebelii. I really recommend the last one. It looks so cool and is very hardy.

Memo loved the video as usual and it’s always like watching a friend chitchat with us! I’ve almost completely have given up on Alocasia except for my Alocasia Longiloba Lucifer because it’s just a super tough and chill one for me! I’m so tired of restarting corms or the inevitable spider mite situation that follows them like a horrible curse! 👏🏼😂 I swear Alocasia intentionally “take themselves out” just to test our patience!!! Memo, Alocasia baginda Dragon: I don´t understand what´s wrong. Maybe you have some highly stressed specimen? I have her and it is such a delightful plant to grow. Very pest resilient and very pretty. I grow her in pon with slow release fertiliser, in a large northern window, 55-65% humidity. Only very sensitive to overwatering - I found the water reservoir can be very problematic, and can easily cause yellowing leaves and leaf drop, so I only water her weekly from the top and she keeps all her leaves that grew in our home (now I have her for over 2,5 leaves since she was a little plantlet).

    • @Houseplantygoodness

Glad to hear your Alocasia is doing well! Thanks for sharing your care tips. 🌱👍 I will try to get another one I think and grow it with your technique and see how I get on. I think the secret is not overwatering like other Alocasia that tend to be a bit thirstier.

I find my Queen Anthurium really easy except you can’t touch it without causing damage. I love it anyway. It and my Piper crocatum both live in my bathroom, so decent humidity and I find them both really easy. I just chopped my crocatum and it came out with four new growth points. I do find it 50/50 in propagation. Also love my chiapense and my variegated chiapense.

One of my paraiso verdes just pushed out a conjoined stem with two separate leaves. As janky and unreliable in variegation as they are, I'm still fairly happy with mine. They're not award winners by any means, but I havent gotten sick of them yet so 🤷🏽‍♀️😂. I do understand the disappointment though of so many people who have lost that sought after variegation. I have one that has maintained high variegation, but its right under a grow light. Like right under. 🏜😎 I also wanted to say, I always loved Alocasias, but I love them even more after watching another video of yours where you said they love their soil to be kept moist. Since then, mine have flourished. Thanks for another great video Memo, and thanks for the tips on Alocasias. Mine are just loving life and now put out so many more leaves. 💚
